"Eight hours of rock"

February 1, 2007

Rock band The Hybrid will headline an eight-hour, marathon concert Sunday at Hagerstown 10 Cineplex's concert theater.

The group from Chambersburg, Pa., will be the last of eight bands to perform at the all-ages show. Each band will perform a 45-minute set, with 15 minutes to set up.

The Hybrid goes on at 10 p.m. Disorder, a five-piece rock band from Martinsburg, W.Va., will kick off the show at 3 p.m.

Organizer and promoter Jeff Britton said the mega concert is an attempt to support local bands hoping to move beyond garage-band status. Since September 2006, Leitersburg Concert Theatre has played host to several local bands - many of them with members still in high school.

"I think it's great since it's an all-ages show. We usually play at bars," said Chris Boggs, the 24-year-old Williamsport guitarist and lead vocalist for Van Lear, the third act to perform.

Britton said he does not expect the same crowd to stay for the full eight hours, but he thinks people will come out for their favorite bands in the lineup. Still, he's expecting a good turnout at the 500-seat theater.

The Hybrid has been generating a regional buzz, and they've drawn crowds to past shows at Leitersburg, Britton said.

"They're really good for such a young group," he said.

The Hybrid - two high school seniors and three college freshmen - formed seven months ago after its members left other bands, explained the group's drummer and unofficial spokesman David Hoover.

"That's how we got our name," said Hoover, an 18-year-old senior at Chambersburg Area Senior High School.

Hoover said themes of anger, angst and self-determination are common in most of the band's songs, but the band has upbeat songs, such as the acoustic, wordless "Horizon."

"We'll try any idea. If it doesn't sound good, we all know. It has to feel really original," Hoover said.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m.

The lineup is:
3 p.m. - Disorder
4 p.m. - Bland
5 p.m. - Van Lear
6 p.m. - Never Be Known
7 p.m. - Faded Memory
8 p.m. - Defyance
9 p.m. - Anamide
10 p.m. - The Hybrid - The Herald-Mail

"Band celebrates CD release"

February 17, 2007

A local hard rock band, The Hybrid, made up of five local teens, celebrated their first published CD with a big party.

The 160 fans who attended the celebration on Feb. 11 at the Orchards Restaurant in Chambersburg paid $10 each for an evening of music and a copy of the CD.

Two other bands opened for The Hybrid at the party.

The CD's five songs were written and played by the five-man group, who are all from Chambersburg.

The music on the CD entitled, "Between Fear and Faith," concerns aspects of life such as anger, stress and betrayal, said David Hoover, a senior at Chambersburg Area Senior High School who is the band's drummer.

He also wrote much of the band's music and the basic structure of the music with friend and fellow band member Kyle Underkoffler, also a CASHS senior and one of the band's two guitarists. Hoover and Underkoffler have been writing music together for two years.

Other band members are Bryant Thierwechter, the band's vocalist and lyrics writer; and Tyler Mickley, bass player. Thierwechter and Mickley are freshmen at Bradley Academy in York; and Adam Swisher, guitarist, is a freshman at Shippensburg University.

Together for eight months, the band performs "experimental progressive hard rock," Hoover said, adding The Hybrid has played in Hagerstown, Md., Boonsboro, Md., and was scheduled to play in Arbutus, Md. Friday, and is scheduled to play at Cookies Lounge, Martinsburg, W.Va. today.

The band has played in Chambersburg at the Church of the Brethren, 260 S. Fourth St., the Eugene C. Clarke Jr. Community Center, South Third Street, and at The Orchards Restaurant on Orchard Drive. It has eight shows booked.

"Were trying to make a living from the band, which is our optimal goal," Hoover said, adding the band plans to record a full-length CD, 10 to 11 songs, this summer in Baltimore. "We're definitely an original band, not a cover band."

In addition to their own songs, The Hybrid performs a few cover songs at their performances.

The band's influences include Sevendust, Finch, Tool, Glassjaw, Deftones, Coheed & Cambria, Incubus, Alice In Chains, Muse, Rage Against The Machine, Lennex and many others.

Copies of the CD are available for $6, according to the MySpace Web site, by e-mailing the group on the MySpace site.

Bio

In a day and age when the music market is overflowing and prog metal bands are a dime a dozen, The Hybrid is a no-holds-barred blend of an already marketable genre. With new jaw dropping tones and rhythm-laden riffs, The Hybrid is back with a vengeance. With songs as heavy as they are melodic, and a voice as strong as it is honest, The Hybrid will leave you wanting more. The end result is artistic integrity that is far from contrived and without regard for limits. The Hybrid is a fresh new sound that demands your undivided attention! The band consists of Bryant Thierwechter on vocals & guitar, David Hoover on drums, Tyler Mickley on guitar, James Paul on guitar, and Adrian Drake on bass. Centered in the small town of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, The Hybrid has continued to grow and transform in almost every way. Originally formed in 2006, many musicians have come and gone, but Thierwechter, Hoover, and Mickley have remained the original line up. With the addition of two new members, The Hybrid is stronger than ever before. While wielding an exciting and adrenaline infused live show, they don’t sacrifice good sound for theatrics. In addition to being an exciting live act, they are very recording savvy and self-sufficient. The Hybrid has engineered, mixed, and produced almost all of their music. In February 2007, The Hybrid released a five song EP. In 2009, they released their first full length studio album entitled “The Art in the Artifice”, which was recorded at Wrightway studios in Baltimore, Maryland. Since then, The Hybrid has been working on new material for their highly anticipated full-length album entitled “Versus Inertia”. The Hybrid hopes that with their creative abilities and off-beat methods, they can spread their ideas and music to the world over.
