"Fave Band Of The Month - "The Heights""

Rarely is the word “free” associated with anything REALLY good. I mean, when you wander through Costco, employees are seen handing out “free” samples (which, of course, you pay for with your membership). Sometimes you get a sample of laundry detergent or shaving cream in the mail. It can’t just be me getting that stuff. That stuff’s good.
Anyways, what I’m getting at is, I recently discovered a band called “The Heights” after my friend told me to go download their EP for free. Yep, that’s right. Free. This band is born from the ashes of a band hailing from Uxbridge called “In Lights.” When the band split, guitarists Gavin Sutton and Nick Dooley went off to form “The Heights.” With Gavin Sutton taking over lead vocals and guitar and Nick Dooley holding down the bass, the band went off on a search to recruit a second guitar player and a drummer.
With the completion of the band’s final line-up, they went into the studio to record their first EP, self-titled “The Heights.” Featuring four really solid tracks, each song showcases the band’s incredible writing and performing talents. These guys can really play.
In their short time together as a band, they’ve already accomplished so much. Including having one of their tracks featured on CollegeHumor giants “Jake and Amir’s” short film, “Fired.” Pretty cool! They’ve hit over 1,000 Likes on Facebook and have broken the 10 000 follower mark on Twitter. Impressive for a group of guys that have been together for less than a year.
Trying to pinpoint a strong track is already tough on a short record, but with this EP, it’s next to impossible, every track is that good. The EP showcases their versatile writing, including the driving “I Want To See Who You’d Be At The End Of The World,” the poppy “Something In The Water,” the blues-y “The Difficulty In Honestly,” and the closing ballad “Monsters.”
The Heights track listing:
Something In The Water
I Want To See Who You’d Be At The End Of The World
The Difficulty In Honesty
Monsters
Your personal favourite will be dependent upon your tastes, my personal favourites are “Something In The Water” and “The End Of The World.” These guys can only stand to get better.
They’re heading into Newcomb studios soon to start recording their second EP to be released sometime in March. Look forward to it, I know I am!

"Featured: May 13-May 19 2012 - The Heights - Mariposa Belle"

It is May 13th 2012 which means it is time to award the next 'Song of the Week' to a deserving artist or band.

This week the featured song is being awarded to a fairly local band.

From Toronto, Ontario, The Heights just released their newest EP titled Bonacres on April 24th 2012.

This rock/country/pop style band definitely has a unique sound when it comes to their music. Their almost 'refreshing' style, accompanied with their beautiful lyrics, is certainly going to take this band far.

Originally starting in 2011 as vocalist Gavin Sutton's solo project, The Heights ended up turning into something more. Gavin's initial plans where to record a solo EP, however he ended up forming the band with his childhood friend Nick Dooley. And, as the say, the rest is history.

On their Facebook band page it states, "The Story is simple, really. A bunch of kids with a love for music come together to play some honest tunes. The Heights is an accumulation of almost a decade of the musical equivalent of the pursuit of happiness, because that is what playing music should be all about. If there is one thing The Heights pride themselves on, it is honesty, and in a world where the artificial is becoming the norm, honesty is what the people have been calling for."

So, with the talent that Gavin Sutton (vocals / guitar), Nick Dooley (guitar), Colin Jacques (bass) and Mike Witzel (drums) bring into the scene we are excited to announce that their song Mariposa Belle, off their newest EP, is the 'Song of the Week' this week.

Their unique style and sound continually makes them stand out in the crowded music industry these days. And, with five incredible songs on their newest EP we are excited to give their song Mariposa Belle this weeks featured spot.

When asked about the EP title itself vocalist Gavin Sutton said, "Bonacres is the street I grew up on. It's the street where I met my best friends (including Nick Dooley) and it's where my life began. It's also where I shaped who I would be."

So, definitely make sure you check out The Heights and spread the word of this talented band. The Heights recently played a Basement Entertainment show so we are proud to not only award them with 'Song of the Week', but we are excited to tell fans to check them out! These four are definitely going somewhere and we are stoked to be able to watch them.

Be sure to get your copy of Mariposa Belle and the rest of their Bonacres EP on iTunes now. You can also check out Mariposa Belle here. - Basement Entertainment

"The Heights - Bonacres EP"

The weather may be terrible in the UK at the moment but here at HevyPetal HQ, we feel like we have just been transported to a sunny beach somewhere. So, pop on your sunglasses, dust off your flip flops, stick Bonacres on and come join us! This latest release from Toronto pop-rock outfit The Heights is a sure fire way to bring a little bit of summer to your stereo.

The pretty little five-track EP kick starts with the acoustic intro of up-tempo track Round and Round. Heavily pop-infused, with the occasional country twist, The Heights work well to create a fresh but laid back sound. Gavin Sutton has a great, distinguishable voice that is of a slight similarity to Shaant Hacikyan of Cute Is What We Aim For. With lines such as ‘I can be the Prince you always wanted’ and ‘I can be the rescue she desperately needs’, this EP should come with a health warning because hearts will melt.

Following on is The Sound where the old acoustic is ditched for keys, along the lines of Making April and Jack’s Mannequin. The easy going, feel good sound continues on into Mariposa Belle, which is easily the best track of Bonacres. The chorus is ridiculously catchy and the occasional soft group vocals give a nice feel too.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that The Heights are all sunshine and rainbows though. Oh no, they have a dark, sulkier side too. Cigarette Burn and Expectations vs. Reality are prime examples of the band’s secret angst that lies not too deep beneath the surface.

So if you like your tunes summery, easy going and generally sugar sweet, Bonacres is the EP for you.

The official release date is April 24th but in the meantime, head over to The Heights Facebook Page and download their previous EP for free! - Hevypetal
