Three facts about this photo. 1) The Capitol Beat comprises eight musicians. This band is humongous! 2) They all went to Canterbury High School here in Ottawa, but all have since moved to TO. 3) Last Saturday night, not only was Zaphod’s packed, but their concert sort of acted as a Canterbury High reunion. Sweet. And funk! - Ottawa Express

Next up was The Capitol Beat, who came out to an awesome intro with each band member being announced and coming out to the stage. As each member joined the stage they added their own part to a funky jam. Now feeling all warm and fuzzy inside, and craving more grooves (thanks to The Flow) the audience was instantly into the music. The Capitol Beat did not disappoint. With a tight brass and rhythm section (that included two percussionists), great song dynamics, and an incredible singer, Liam McArdle, it was as if they were directly connected to the best soul and funk from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.

Bio
Get to know the Capitol Beat. Do it. It will be good for you.
On the outside they look like 8 scrawny white kids who have spent too much time in their parents’ basements.
On the inside, they are passionate, smart, and humble. Bear witness to their live music and you realize what they are about: playing for their own enjoyment and loving every second of it, no matter what the conditions are. The young group feeds off each other’s energy; they make magic together.
"It's the force of friendship that drives this band."
-Ian Culley
Friends first, musicians second may be one way to describe them, but both seemingly go hand in hand. As they've learned, you can’t truly have one without the other!
Their love for soul music brought them together, but their thirst for creation keeps them together. This band is writing music that has the ability to bridge generations. They harness the full sound of an 8 piece soul band: rhythm section, horns, back up harmonies, and a wild front man.
After a successful summer tour promoting their first EP, A New Beat, the band has begun a monthly residency at Measure. Their next feature is a Halloween celebration on the 31st of October. They will head back home to Ottawa to play with fellow high school alumni The Balconies on November 22nd.
"Awesome music. Loved every minute of the show."
-Emile Roy-Foster
