Are you Ready To Rock? Check Out “Self-Made Man” By Rebel Heart
Rebel Heart Band is a rock band from the Independent Republic of Vancouver Island. Their sound is an unapologetic take on a more modern version of classic rock. The heavy guitar and catchy melodies fused with edgy vocals make Rebel Heart’s sound incredibly unique. Comprised of four members, Charlie, Jimmy, Josh, and Jon had to put their music careers on hold to raise the families but these guys are back and better than ever. Rebel Heart gained attention from the notable producer Paul Laine (Poison, Scorpions, Defiant, Danger Danger) who agreed to produce their next album “Yuk Fu” and the success has been growing ever since!

“Self-Made Man” is a killer single off of Rebel Heart's album “Yuk Fu”. I’m getting serious Metallica vibes with the raspy and addicting vocals. It features razor sharp riffs, clever lyrics and upbeat tempo. “Self-Made Man” is a song about being humble. “There’s no such thing as a self-made man, everything you’ve got came through other hands” describes this theme perfectly. No one person or celebrity is all that, they made their way through the help of others whether that be directly or through history. The lyricism and skilled ability to connect to fans and listeners is a talent only the most sought after artists have. I’d love the hear the bands inspiration for this song and more about the meaning behind it. The great Paul Laine definitely has an ear when it comes to stars because Rebel Heart’s sound is a more modern twist on the Scorpions legendary arrangements and aesthetic. Whether or not you’re a fan of classic rock, these guys are here to stay and it’s easy to see why! I highly recommend you check out the entire album “Yuk Fu”, it’s a refreshing treat from start to finish.
How did you come up with the name The Rebel Heart Band?
Charlie: Our producer Paul Laine was in the studio with us and we were struggling coming up with a name, we had a song we had done for the upcoming CD called Rebel Heart – so Paul said why not that name…we all looked at each other and said, that’s awesome…great fit.

Check out the single “Self-Made Man” and read more in our exclusive interview below!

What's the writing process like collectively?
Charlie: We all have input into the polishing of the songs. No matter who has written it, but Grateful Jon is the primary writer.

“Self-Made Man” is a great single! Can you talk about the meaning behind it?
Charlie: This song came out of we are 99 movement. It states the fact that it doesn’t mater if you have a billion dollars to build the biggest tower on earth you still need all of us to make it happen, so no such thing as a self-made man!
Of course with the Trump movement it seems everyone thinks we wrote the song about him – but as the saying goes, if the shoe fits…

When you guys aren’t making music, what do you do?
Charlie: I own a pub, so that keeps me quite busy, I also love mountain biking and boating. But of course the most import thing for me is spending quality time with my family.

Grateful Jon: #1...think about music
#2 ...learn how to problem solve, work as a team...and which beer tap is the IPA.

Josh Fulford: Hanging out with my family at our cabin on Savory Island.

Jimmy Dupius: Playing my never-ending record collection.

Henry Grierson: Walking the dog, playing in a couple of local cover bands to keep the fingers hoping, and discussing music theory in detail.

What are some challenges you've faced together and how did you overcome those challenges?
The hardest challenge is getting noticed. There are so many great musicians out there, and we love collaborating with them to help all of us reach that common goal – so we keep pushing to the middle, building our fan base and playing as often as we can, and the key for us is keeping it fun, we are playing to 50 people or 500 – we love the energy and it drives our passion for music.

Interview with Rebel Heart – Yuk Fu
by Joshua (J.Smo) Smotherman March 20, 2019 9:11 am
Tagged With: Canada, classic rock, Rock, rock n roll, singer, songwriter.

In this interview spotlight, I chat with Rebel Heart about the new project, challenges, technology and more.
Full Q&A along with links and music below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)
[Charlie] I was born in the 60’s in Germany, we came to the US when I was 6 and then decided to go to CND where we settled on Vancouver Island.
I watched my cousins playing in Germany at a Gasthaus and wanted at that young age to be on stage. My influences have been the music form the 60’s to the 90’s.
My music partner who does more of the writing then I do – Grateful Jon is also inflected by the same time era – so our music is definitely a heartland style of Rock and Roll.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to keep going?
[Charlie] my grandmother had a piano in her place, I would always hammer on it when I went to her house – at some point I am sure she could not take it anymore and I got sent off to lessons – lol The piano allowed me to take on other interments much easier so depending on the band I was in I played keys, guitar, bass and at one point the trumpet. Today, it is my friends my family, my bandmates and my music partner Grateful Jon that keeps me passionate about our music.

How is this new release different than previous ones? Were you trying to accomplish anything specific?
[Charlie] There has been a long gap from the last time I did a CD – young family, time issues, band issues – but this project which we have been working on together now for a few years has allowed me to pursue that passion of music that has always been in my heart – and my music partner Grateful Jon helps push well more like persuaded me back onto the road of doing original music with him…Not to mention my good friend Paul Laine who has greatly helped and encourage – coached – guided – course corrected us along the way…..Paul took us to the next level, without him we would not be where we are at today!

Name one or two challenges you face as an indie musician in this oversaturated, digital music age? How has technology helped you (since we know it does help)?
[Charlie] How do you get in front of the crowd to be heard. So many venues, so many hops to jump thru, how do you get on the right Radio stations… Not sure that technology age has helped? With Technology there is not a seamless process, in fact, there are Countless avenues out there and some of them are just scammers pretending to care but really just want to get $$$ out of you. And when you potentially find an online platform that might work you spend hours applying, posting, adding to the social media sites – which really are almost as many as the stars…lol
From the stories I have read, wasn’t any better when the record companies where running the show – So the reality is you keep playing and doing it because you love playing – we may never get past our local playing area – and although I do wish for more – and the reason why is we are having a blast – we are having fun playing our music….whether it be to a small crowd or a large crowd – we are loud, proud and dame well unrepented in our playing style…

What was the last song you listened to?
[Charlie] I listen to the local classic rock station, so the last song I heard today was Twisted sister – we aren’t gonna take it anymore – lol

Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
[Charlie] definitely CD’s as you can open up the case, read about the band. But I have to confess I do both, as there is not a lot of room in my car for a CD case….just say’n…

How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
[Charlie] Apple – even though we might not hit star status they let us join them and don’t charge us for it -“: -)

Where is the best place to connect with you online and discover more music?
[Charlie] our website or Facebook:

Back in February, I made a New Music Release video on YouTube and this band commented on the video.

I then contacted them and after a few emails, they sent me their music!
I have had a few short email chats with Charlie from the band. We discussed the members of the band as I noticed one was missing, Charlie wrote back.
"Yes we were a 4pc – I use to play keys for some of the songs but I also play rhythm guitar and lead vocals – so we decided to add a keyboard player."
"We will be getting new photos done shortly with the 5 of us."
That person is
Henry Grierson

I feel that if Steve Earle met Tom Petty and wrote some songs together, then if they had this band sing the songs --this would give you an idea of how they sound! That is at least for their first song on the album "Self Made Man".

I really like their sound through all the songs on this album. The title song is really catchy too, good rhythm, groove, vocals, and a great bassline all of it, drums too being a drummer myself I find myself tapping my fingers and feet to the beats.

Another question that I had for Charlie was if they have some new music they are working on and any tour plans for the summer.

"Yes, we have been working on recording for our 2nd CD with producer Paul Laine and engineer Ron Obvious. We have several festivals booked that we will be playing this summer."

So they may be walking away in the picture, but they are far from being done anytime soon by the sounds of things that Charlie told me.
I leave you now with my personal favorite song off the album.

Rebel Heart is all about passion.
Their music bleeds it with each
song on their new EP. The
tracks are obviously true and
sincere manifestations of the
spirits that dwell within this
band. Just listen to them. They
are trying to tell us to follow
our own rebel hearts and to
never give up on our dreams!
The first thing that pulls you in
is the truly polished guitar intros
provided by producer Paul
Laine. Paul is a seriously talented
and soulful guitarist, he
is the real deal. The solo work
is thoughtful, tasteful, never
overbearing; always echoing
the intent of the song. Lee
Revill of UK's Blood Red Saints
also joins in on lead guitar with a cameo performance on the song, "Marahoochie".
These stunning leads are all purposeful and unique. Josh Fulford, Rebel Hearts' new
guitarist brings his own energy and style to live shows with awesome results. Vocalist,
Charlie Aiken brings his multi-talented skills to every song (vocals, strings, keys).
His lyrics reflect the band's posture on livin', lovin' and never givin' in. He establishes
the band's direction with powerful vocals and lyrics that get right to the point. The
intention is obvious and make no mistake, this is a band that likes to have fun! To
really understand what Charlie and the guys
are all about, you have to listen to their song
titled after the bands name, "Rebel Heart." It
gives it to you straight, with no chaser. By far,
this tracks soulful melodies and amazing musicianship
captures their true essence and simply
asks us to accept their rebel hearts. Drummer,
Jim Dupuis is as solid as a rock. His playing
reflects perfectly what Charlie is trying to say
in these songs. He lays back and breathes life
into those guitar/bass lines. Such sweet finesse!
On Bass is Grateful Jon. He is also playing
keys, strings, harmonica, and backing vocals.
It is easy to see how integral he is to the true
sound of Rebel Heart. Multi-talented and truly
a pocket player, he seamlessly weaves his soul
into the basslines for this band. In the immortal
words of the gospel of Grateful Jon, "Let go
of the fears that bind you, nurture your passions
and sing them into the world." Never a truer
thing could be said, Amen. The Rebel Heart Band conjures up the spirits of the classic
heartland rock artists, who wanted us all to live, love and laugh our way to the next
life. Go out and listen for yourself. - Morgan Toutant

"Band write up"

Rebel Heart is a rock band Hailing from the Independent Republic of Vancouver Island whose sound is an unapologetic jump in the air for fans of classic Rock Music. Staking out a wide territory in the classic rock genre, with a sensibility that only time could bring to their music, the songs are a blend of the social commentary of Steve Earl combined with the wry humor of Warren Zevon. "Self-Made Man" is a hard-hitting protest song borne out of the "99" movement.
Their mighty, crunchy guitar riffs together with their pummeling rhythmic textures and dynamic edgy vocals are laced with old school elements while still maintaining the focus of a modern band. With a rhythm section throwing down tight grooves and guitar big enough to put a hole in your chest, it’s hard to believe the band is only four guys.... who never gave up their dream.
Charlie, Jimmy, Josh and Jon all set aside music careers to raise families...... but they never forgot the dream or their passion. And.... now that the kids are grown, it’s Time - they’re back and their rockin'!!
In early 2017, Rebel Heart caught the attention of legendary recording engineer/producer Paul Laine (Poison; Scorpions; Defiant; Danger Danger). Laine became a fan and was even more impressed by the demos of new material the guys were working on. Upon hearing these songs, he immediately offered to produce their album.

The band entered the studio with Laine in the fall of 2017, and Yuk Fu was released in September 2018. The response to the album has exceeded the band’s wildest expectations. The album has received national and international attention with radio stations in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Rebel Heart’s Yuk Fu is available on their website (www.TheRebelHeartBand.com), iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, and most majors streaming services.

"Press Release"

The name brings forth images. A free spirit, walking a different path, fearlessness, taking a chance.
These are the things we talk about, write about and sing about…and sometimes, just sometimes, a love song to remind us that this whole human life thing is really about LOVE.
Rebel Heart currently finished its studio working of their first EP release, with internationally renowned Rocker, producer and all around mensch, PAUL LAINE.
Master production by renowned Chris Aiken.
And the music….Well… It’s like this
John Mellencamp walks into a bar….And sits down at a table with Steve Earl and the Tragically Hip. They’re getting drunk and telling road stories. In the corner Weird Al and Axl Rose are playing pool; Al is kicking Axl’s ass (Just sayin’) …And the ghost of Tom Petty is whispering in the ear of Tom Waits who is tending bar.
The Music…Loud, a bit proud, damn well Unrepentant.
The members of Rebel Heart are proud citizens of the independent republic of Vancouver Island.
Charlie Aiken – Vocals, strings, keys and yes…ENERGY!
Jim Dupuis – Drums, beer can, cowbells and anything that will take a beating.
Grateful Jon – Bass, strings keys, harmonica, lyrics, vocals and general abuse.
Josh Fulford – Lead guitar; poster boy for the band! - Charlie Aiken
