You might assume that the band’s name “The Lillies” describes a less than masculine group of musicians. You assume wrong. Although the band’s tunes feature emotional songs of mellow love and life, push out those thoughts of fragility; just enjoy the sweet tunes that The Lillies bring to the stage.
Originally, it was a joke. The band members used “Was of Lillies and Remains” to refer to a girl that the previous singer had quite the crush on, “After deep consideration and joking around about it, we decided to choose the name ‘The Lillies,’” says guitarist Matthew Humphrey.
Don’t worry though, you should expect a steady and sure beat from these guys. “A typical show with The Lillies is full of random extraordinary events that man has baffled to define. Despite the fact that people seem to think our band name means that we are pansies, we’re actually really wild and always looking for trouble,” says bassist Raul Magana III.
With trouble on the heels of this indie band you best be expecting a sweet evening at the upcoming Marquis Lounge performance. “We expect to play our hearts out and give the best performance possible to win over as many fans as possible. We also want to give out as many free demos as possible so people can hear what we are working on,” singer and guitarist Roberto Pereda explains.
For a band based in Hesperia, it’s difficult to get a good amount of performances set up because, you know, nothing really happens in that area. However despite the small music scene, The Lillies have quite the fan group elsewhere; especially in the IE. “We played a show out in Riverside at Back to the Grind down in their basement where they had a lot of awesome art from local artists on the walls. We ended up packing the basement full and people began bumping and grinding to our songs,” says drummer Mark Simpson, “Roberto, Matthew and Raul ended up in the crowd playing there instruments and dancing, it was a great show.”
Aside from the upcoming festivals and tours, parting words from Pereda ensure that the band is ready to entertain you, “We just want our music to be heard and want to keep doing what we love.”

From what I can see, the Desert doesn’t seem to have a super consistent Indie music scene. Indie bands get together and break up on a monthly basis, however, The Lillies have been there through it all. I really wanted to get Indie band’s in on the Local Band Spotlight, so of course, The Lillies are the perfect place to start. I got a chance to shoot some questions to them.
How long have you been a band?
Matthew- Well, me and Robert started the Lillies about 2 years ago. Originally just writing music and recording it with hopes of establishing a full band later on. After playing with various musicians from the high desert we now have Raul on bass and
Mark on drums. They have been with us for about 6 months.
Why are you guys a band?
Roberto- I believe we are a band because we understand each other from a musician’s perspective. I think we are all in it for the right reason and we can all sense it from each other. It’s somewhat like a family. You get to see subtle things that make each member unique musically, and the interesting part is mixing your intangibles with theirs and seeing what comes out. If the end result makes sense to everyone you’ve got yourself a band.
How did you start?
Matthew- Me and Robert were both in another band as guitarists. After realizing things weren’t meshing as well as we wanted them to, and with a vague feeling that me and him could make some decent music, we quit the band and started our own project. It’s been a progress.
What are your in?uences?
Matthew- I’m a blues guy at heart, I always will be. BB King, Albert King, Elmore James, also jazz, a lot of jazz, Django Reinhardt and such. Of course all the great rock of the 60’s and 70’s.
Roberto- I grew up with the blues, so I’m, at root, a blues guy as well, Mississippi john hurt is incredible and haunting. I love a good songwriter. Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel. I also have a bit of a knack for the unconventional, unique approaches the likes of Velvet Underground, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Portishead.
Raul- All the musicians I play with, and Esperanza Spalding
Mark Simpson- I started playing punk so I was in?uenced a lot by that, but I also love drummers like Buddy Rich, who I think is a genius.
Do you guys have any CD releases?
Raul- Right now we are recording our album in a studio, but it’s not something that should be rushed. As soon as it’s ready we will de?nitely let it be known.
What are your lyrics about?
Roberto- As vague as it may sound, they’re generally about an emotional struggle. The need for love, the need for understanding, the anxiety that comes with being imperfect. I can be cynical, I think that’s ?ne as long as I know I’m sincere.
What are your theories on life in general?
Roberto- Life is a struggle at best, but that’s how it should be if you want to get the good juice out of it. Pain, pleasure, excess, mistakes, rewards, all of it is better than the dull stride of perfection.
Raul- We are a tiny bacteria in a large universe, that’s all.
Any shows coming up?
Mark- Yeah we tend to play often in the high desert in several bars and the occasional backyard show. Good times. Nov. 18th we will be going to Vegas for a couple gigs. First at Boomers on Friday, and on Sunday we are playing the ‘Exposed Music
Festival’ featured on Fused TV. That should be fun, and it’s Vegas, can’t complain.
What are your plans for the future?
Matthew- Keep writing music, keep growing as artists, cause we’re not giving up. We’re going for broke no matter what the industry is like nowadays.
What are your opinions on the music scene up here?
Roberto- I think the keyword is growth. Is it gonna keep growing? Hard to say, but I hope so. There’s been a lot more variety, and now you have bands like Psychedelic Milk, and Phantom Other, and Modern Mariachis, all with a sound their own. I
like that. Also, we are a lot more accepted than I thought we would be. For example, after one show, a guy came up and said, ‘f*** yeah man, great show, me and my friends used to talk s*** about you guys just cause of your name, but now that I hear you guys I really loved that s***’. It’s nice to know that while people tend to stick to
styles they like, they can like yours. Metalhead, hipster, punker, indie? Who cares? Music is f***ing music.
Thanks a lot gentlemen, ?nally, why should people listen to you?
