James Popik/Ten Foot Tall

Get Back on the Highway has a homey feel to it. It’s an album that makes one feel a cozy sense of belonging. And even though it’s just an EP, it certainly packs a punch as well. There’s no filler here, just four solid tracks that fulfill. This is friendly music, and listening to it makes you feel like you’d be right at home hanging out with the members of the band. Through their music they seem down-to-earth, but not in a way that diminishes their legitimate musical clout. All the members are experienced musicians that truly hold their own when it comes to making music. Together, they create a cool but punchy vibe that serves as both intriguing and entertaining.

On Get Back on the Highway, Ten Foot Tall Band weaves heartfelt songs focusing on the follies so typical to life while still creating a sense of hope and progress (the pertinent example being the name of the title track itself). The record is just 15 minutes long but with its playful groove organ, seasoned guitar licks, and familiar vocals, the fun is sure to last longer.

I was recently contacted about an amazing blues rock band out of Hopewell, NJ, called Ten Foot Tall. They have a sound that is comparable to The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and even the Grateful Dead. I guess that’s more of a country rock sound. Either way, I really enjoyed it! Songs like “Get Back On The Highway,” “Sleepin’ In The Devil’s Arms,” and “Feelin’ Fine” really make you want to drive out to the country (or South Jersey) with your windows rolled down, hair blowing in the wind, and blasting these tunes!

Ten Foot Tall find themselves fresh out of the studio with Grammy award-winning producer David Ivory, who is known for his work with The Roots, Halestorm and Patti LaBelle. 2012 is looking to be a busy one for singer/guitarist and founder James Popik and his crew, as Ten Foot Tall plan on doing a lot of touring in support of their third CD, Get Back On The Highway. The guys from Ten Foot Tall are excited that their high-energy live performances have finally been captured in a studio recording. Joining Popik (the group’s fearless leader) in Ten Foot Tall is guitarist Jeff Page, bassist Luke Kessel, keyboardist Pete Nardone, drummer Andy Janowiak, and the vocals and percussion of Jeanne Yarrow.

No strangers to touring, Ten Foot Tall has already hit the road with The Marshall Tucker Band, double-billed with Robert Hazard, and they’ve even earned a support slot for the legendary Dave Mason at the Tarrytown Music Hall in New York. The band was also invited to open a series of regional shows for Los Lonely Boys. Fans of The Dead will totally love these guys! Check them out for yourselves at tenfoottallband.com.

I can give Ten Foot Tall the greatest compliment someone in my position can give a local band: I played its CD over and over again because I wanted to, not because I had to. It helps that the Central Jersey-based act plays a style of music that I really love: Southern rock that's as melodic as it is jammy. Fans of the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and especially Marshall Tucker Band will dig Ten Foot Tall. Given those bands' New Jersey followings, Ten Foot Tall has a huge potential audience for its thoroughly enjoyable self-titled indie debut EP.

The band also should draw well and enlist new fans when opening for Marshall Tucker on Friday at Starland Ballroom, Sayreville. If you can't make that show, there will be plenty of Ten Foot Tall to enjoy this weekend. The band also will play the Black Potatoe Festival on Saturday at the Red Mill Museum Village in Clinton.

I hope that Tracy Sousa of What the Funk? is singing backups for them there because her sweet, sexy, soulful backing vox adds greatly to the band. What the Funk? bassist Luke "The Duke" Kessel also is on board and is his ever-funky self.

The tasty slide playing of Jeff Page and James Popik, the percussive pop of Clay Cassel and the classical-rooted, Benmont Tench-like keyboards of Pete Nardone also impress, particularly on the instrumentals "Dickey's Lament," a tribute to former Allman Brother Dickey Betts, and the closing "Catch 22."

Popik's singing and songwriting won't turn the music industry on its ear, but both sport a familiar charm that hold their own. I particularly like his Radiators-like tale "Midnight in New Orleans."

As a Southern boy I gotta say these guys immediately appealed to my laid back attitude and my lazy days on the Chattahochee River mindset. They sound as if they could have come from the Southland as well,but no,they are Jersey boys through and through. They have opened for the likes of The Marshall Tucker Band so they have defiantly managed to pull off the Southern Rock vibe! However,I should probably just let their bio speak for them,"Ten Foot Tall draws from funky New Orleans grooves,searing Blues as well Jazz and Classic Rock for a deep,rich sound. If Lowell George and Stevie Ray Vaughn sat in with the Allmans while Dr. John manned the keys and Bonnie Rait stopped by it might sound like Ten Foot Tall." Now doesn't that make you you want to reach for a cold beer and a pair of headphones?! It certainly does for me!
