Chicago, IL ~ Sylvia Fedrick is a Christian and contemporary gospel artist who, despite getting a late start in the music industry, is definitely taking the city of Chicago by storm. She was late into her 30s when she decided to follow God’s lead and pursue her music career again, which had been stagnant for nearly ten years. She takes a deep breath and recalls that it was not easy at all, and there were plenty of times when she contemplated giving up; but for each time those feelings arose, she is convinced that God sent angels to encourage her and to put wisdom in her path to refill her cup so that she would not be thirsty. This is often the only boost required to restore her faith and to give her the confidence not to get weary and for her to continue what she is doing.
She released her first Christian/Contemporary Gospel Artist CD, “Sistha’s Under God’s Construction,”in August of 2008. While this was no small feat, she continuously strives to make contributions to society and the music industry while, as she puts it, “continually celebrating God’s goodness.”
Upon completely accepting the power that one can possess through faith, trust, and obedience to God’s will, she followed her vision and put into motion the Hat & Glove Inspiration Breakfast. This is the third year that she has hosted this event. She shared how humbling it can be to witness her heart’s desire to bring like-minded individuals together to motivate, uplift, and inspire one another as they each walk through life’s journey. She explained how God spoke to her spirit for her to place herself as an example of how He will bless you if you seek him first. With Christ at the head of a person’s life, Ms. Fedrick believes everything else will follow,
regardless of any negative and discouraging words that may come from friends and family, or the lack of education, finances, and resources. The symbolic meaning behind the Hat & Glove Inspiration Breakfast is to remind us that we all stem from royalty, the crown of Jesus, and that we have a power in our hands that allows us to do good works for the Lord Our God. She goes on to express that “self cannot be in the equation when God is in control; we are just the vessel to be used for His glory.”

Chicago Black Music Awards Nominee "Best Female Gospel Performer" & "Gospel Music's Rising Star"
Black Essence Award Recipient 2010
As young as 4 years old, Sylvia recalls memories of innocently singing her nursery rhymes as her father stood by, recording every last note. A singer himself, Larry Fedrick contributed his beautiful voice to a quartet as a child and, later, the church choir. He never actively pursued a career in gospel music, but would go on to influence that of his musically inclined family, especially his young daughter, Sylvia.
Often singing to her as a child, the influences of Sylvia's father would serve as a foundation upon which Sylvia would grow as an artist, taking with her the sweet melodies of such revered musicians as Sam Cook, Nat King Cole, Dakota Staten, and Billy Eckstine.
Sylvia's involvement in school and community organizations on Chicago's South Side led to her membership in the Walter H. Dyett Magnet school choir. This sparked Sylvia's interest and initiated formal vocal training under the instruction of Naomi Petty. She bettered her vocal range and maintained her involvement at Lindblom Technical High School where she graduated with the honor of "most talented."
Post-graduation, Sylvia continued her craft, singing in weddings and church plays, while participating in a young-adult choir at the Calvary Baptist Church. But, as life would have it, a series of missed connections and wrong turns left Sylvia defeated and disappointed. Sylvia thought she had somehow missed her chance at a career in gospel music...
Sylvia at a Glance...
* During the 1980s, House Music dominated mainstream music. Sylvia contributed as a backup singer for many local groups, including "Rare Form" and "Kajsa."
* Many of her nights were spent hitting the pavement in search of her next gig or participating in open mic night at the Cotton Club.
* While pursuing her next big break, Sylvia became side-tracked by a suitor and was married in 1991.
* In 1997, Sylvia's marriage ended in divorce and she was again on the music scene.
* James T. Meeks is the senior pastor of Chicago's Salem Baptist Church where Sylvia has been a member for the past 14 years.
* In 1998, she joined the choir under the direction of Minister Walter Owens who led Sylvia to Russia on a music ministry.
* Convinced that her life should be more than what it was and that her "day job" in the mortgage business was not enough, Sylvia prayed to God for a path back into the music industry. Her prayers were answered...
* Sylvia's musical influences include Minnie Riperton, Deniece Williams, Stephanie Mills, Patrice Rushen, The Emotions & Tramaine Hawkins.
