"Interview With Dallas Independent Hip Hop Artist Summer47"

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Summer 47 is an independent hip hop artist that touches on a variety of subjects like depression, oppression, love and heartbreak.

1) What inspired you to be a part of the music industry?

I was 9 years old.I was suppose to be on my way to school, but i was late. Eminem, video My name is popped up on tv and from that day forward i knew i wanted to do music. The way he was rapping two words together had me glued in. I don’t remember hearing anybody that sounded like him at the time.

2) Talk to me about the making of your latest project. What was the inspiration behind it?

My Latest Project is tittled Evaluating Depression. And the process of making it was a fun, frustrating and satisfying process all at once. I love writing…I get a joy out of it,but at the same time it can be a bit frustrating.

It’s like you have all these ideas in your head, but you don’t have enough time to get them out,or a new one occurs. My brain stays going. The inspiration behind Evaluating Depression was..
basically me creating a medicine for myself and also creating a project for people who too suffer with it.I actually suffer from depression.

This was me saying instead of me being down about it,let me make light of the situation. And hope this project gives people who also suffer from it a reason to laugh about it and also accept the burden that comes with it.But not letting it dictate your happiness.

3) What was the process behind making the project?

I wrote a ton of material for this project, but a lot didn’t make the tape. The process was well thought out…It was also grueling because being a independent artist you don’t have the proper time.I still had a regular life going on along with doing the music,so it was a lot long days and short nights. But all in all I am proud of this project.

4)What are your thoughts on the hip-hop industry at the moment?

My thoughts on the Hip Hop industry is…It’s changing by the day.Its becoming to the point where you can blow up out of nowhere due to social media,or you can make it the old fashion way by grinding in the streets.Social Media though has changed the game for better and worse.

5) Do you enjoy grinding it out independently or would you prefer to be signed to a major label?

I do enjoy grinding independently to a certain extent.I think people like Chance The Rapper showed the world that the Independent route is a definite way to go.But i also think a major label still have a good amount resources to back you and put you in the right position. It’s really all about you as a ArtistI. I’ll be fine with either or.Especially if it’s not messing with who I am as a Artist.

6) What do you think goes into building a loyal fanbase?

Good Music, dedication to grinding and honesty.I think the audience begins to connect with you on a deeper level pass the music once they get a sense of you music. They relate to who you are and what you represent.

7) What sort of online promo and marketing are you doing to reach your fanbase?

I promote a lot on twitter.I promote my Soundcloud page and Spotify page a lot on twitter.Twitter has been my go to site.

8) As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

My brand is built off of Alienating in terms of the way i think because I feel different from others.I feel as though I can blend in any type of environment with everyone else, but i still know I don’t belong. And that is my music. That is who Summer47 is as a artist.

9) How do you currently make a living as an independent hip-hop artist? What sort of income streams do you have?

I have a 9-5 job.I still have a whole other life going on.I also make money from streams.I have over 60,000 stream plays. Not much, but its something.I also make money by personally selling my Cd’s. - HAO NGUYEN

"Meet The Rapper"

MEET THE RAPPER: Sonny DaVinci is an upcoming hip-hop artist ready to feed the masses with his vivid personality and unorthodox style. Born in Dallas, TX, Sonny was raised by his grandmother, mother and two sisters—an all-female crew who instilled many values in him and introduced him to music (although his father was very involved in his life, he did not live under the same roof). Originally inspired by R&B and soul as a child, Sonny came to love and appreciate artists both present and past, including but not limited to Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, The Temptations, TLC, En Vogue, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding.

This open-mindedness to music brought culture and awareness to Sonny as a child, which originally enabled him to flourish as he soaked up all of the information and character involved in the various musical genres and styles that he was surrounded by.

It wasn’t until Sonny met his older brother at age 6, however, that Sonny was introduced and enamored by hip-hop. After watching his now-favorite emcee, Eminem, on TV, Sonny was startled and intrigued by the animated feel, rebellious attitude, multisyllabic rhyme schemes and intricate patterns found on songs like “My Name Is,” which prompted his original decision to rap at age 9. After disclosing his decision, Sonny’s older brother sat him down and gave him “homework” in the form of classic rap albums to study, plus the encouragement to write every day, work constantly and allow himself to grow and mature as a writer and artist.

After recording for the first time at age 13, Sonny began writing and recording new material, working with his older brother and joining several rap groups during his adolescence. However, it wasn’t until one Sonny’s groups was offered a development deal by a prominent Universal Music Group A&R that Sonny began to truly take music seriously as a potential career. Through watching his brother record a solo mixtape, Sonny decided it was the right time for him to do the same and officially began his career as a solo artist.

In 2013, Sonny released his first official solo project, a mixtape entitled Obsessions and began diligently writing to improve his penmanship and sharpen his craft. Driven by his passion for music and his love for his nieces and nephews—partially dependent on him for their upbringing—Sonny picked up jobs to support his family while constantly focusing on achieving his long-term goals of success as an artist. A believer in artist integrity and authenticity, Sonny began writing from the heart and allowing all of his feelings and thoughts to pour onto paper, unapologetic of who was listening or affected by his life story.

His first official single, “Something Borrowed,” is an example of Sonny’s decision to speak on his life and relationships at length. The single, a club-inspired upbeat track, speaks on dealing with a relationship in which one’s girlfriend is always speaking on what her friends’ opinions of her situation is, rather than what she feels. Inspired by true events, Sonny goes on to tell the woman that her friends are always interested in letting her know what they would do if they were in her shoes, as if they secretly want to borrow them.

As an artist, Sonny takes pride in his ability to be versatile in his style, themes and subject matter. Songs in Sonny’s catalog range from conscious to club bangers to street anthems to storytelling, each part a piece of a larger, more complex puzzle that peers into the human mind. In addition to releasing “Something Borrowed,” Sonny is planning to release his upcoming project, Evaluating Depression, as well as planning to perform around Dallas, widen his audience and further establish his brand. - J.
