"Singer/Songwriter Steve Schultz Releases Video Celebrating New York State"

Hudson Valley based singer/songwriter Steve Schultz has released an impressive new music video for his cover of Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind." Filmed over 5 1/2 days and more than 2,500 miles, the video captures a road trip taken throughout the state - from Buffalo to the tip of Long Island, New York City to the Adirondacks, and more. "I've found that when you meet someone unfamiliar with New York and you tell them that's where you're from, they immediately assume you're from 'the city,'" says Schultz. "So it was important to me that the video show that New York State is much more than that. Big cities, small towns, farmland - New York State has almost everything."

Some of the famous New York locations visited for the video include Grand Central Terminal, the Montauk Point Lighthouse, Coney Island, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Syracuse University, the Apollo Theatre, Whiteface Mountain, Niagara Falls, and more. Steve also made a point to highlight lesser-known locations such as the Jell-O Gallery, Oliver's Candies, Martha's Dandee Creme, and The Wild Center. Since it's official release on July 10, the video has been viewed over 3,800 times and can be seen at his website, www.steveplaysmusic.com.

Steve's recording of "New York State of Mind" was released as a bonus track on his new CD, Over The Edge, a watershed album of creativity with fresh pop-rock instrumentation and timeless songcraft that took over 3 years to complete. His uplifting introspection as a lyricist and anthemic musicality has garnered him favorable comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Ben Folds, as well as recognition from the Songwriters Hall of Fame, New York Songwriters Circle, and New York Songwriters Collective. - www.longisland.com

"'New York State of Mind' video takes Billy Joel fans on a tour of Syracuse and other NY cities"

Singer-songwriter Steve Schultz recorded a cover of Billy Joel's classic "New York State of Mind," and then took the song one step further with a music video that appropriately tours through New York City, Buffalo, Albany, Utica, Syracuse and other NY cities.

According to his website, the video took five-and-a-half days to film as they traveled more than 2,500 miles throughout New York state. Central New Yorkers will recognize the trip's stops at Syracuse University, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, the Stanley Theatre in Utica, the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, SUNY Geneseo, the National Museum of Play in Rochester, and Womens Rights National Historic Park in Seneca Falls.

"The idea to make a video to go with [the song] was there from the beginning," the Hudson Valley-based musician explained in an email interview.

"I've found that when you meet someone unfamiliar with New York and you tell them that's where you're from, they immediately assume you're from 'the city.' So it was important to me that the video show that New York State is much more than that... It was an excuse to revisit places I spent a lot of time in growing up, as well as to visit areas I'd never been to. Plus road trips are awesome."

Syracuse was one of the places Schultz had been to before, as he's proudly seen the original "Piano Man" singer perform twice at the Carrier Dome. He also fondly recalled previous visits to the New York State Fair and the Spaghetti Warehouse, but enjoyed the chance to explore more of the state.

Schultz, who describes his music as "Ben Folds meets Bruce Springsteen," sings and plays piano and percussion on the faithful rendition of Joel's 1976 track from his "Turnstiles" album. The cover appears as a bonus track on Schultz's latest independently-released album, "Over the Edge."

In addition to his work as a solo artist, Schultz also helped build a recording studio called Bottoms Up in Pleasant Valley, N.Y., and fronts a rock-and-soul cover band called In The Pocket.

"Steve Schultz's "A Thin Line" a fine first effort"

Singer-songwriter Steve Schultz hails from Poughkeepsie, but he sounds like he's from Jersey or maybe even Indiana.

Produced by Schultz and guitarist Jeff Berner, "A Thin Line" often has a John Mellencamp-esque anthemic Americana vibe, with chiming guitars and a big beat, as in the title track "A Thin Line." That theme continues with "Sign" stocked with majestic piano fills by Matt Wiltrout that recall Woodstock's David Sancious (who made the early Springsteen records sound so important). "Hold On" has a rolling beat and an anxious heart. The Saturday night ode "Standing at the Edge Of the World" has an earnest approach, while "Step Right Up" has a relentless rhythm.

Schultz' capable pipes aren't going to dazzle the judges on "American Idol," but they get the job done. A fine first effort.

"Steve Schultz steps in with "Over The Edge""

Pleasant Valley’s Steve Schultz has sparkling CD, “Over The Edge,” with a few ties to our area: famed keyboardist Pete Levin joins in, as well as drummer Eric Wagner. Schultz wrote all of the songs here save for a clever cover of Billy Joel’s “New York State Of Mind,” which he offers as a bonus track, and he certainly has a way with a majestic pop tune.

Joel is surely an influence for Schultz as is Ben Folds, and this CD kicks off with the melodic, piano-driven ballad “Shadow,” a melancholy remembrance sung in an earnest, capable voice, as he pulls the heartstrings with just his voice and piano. Title track “Over The Edge” has much more, with a delightful bounce that sounds like a lost Supertramp track, starting out with piano, horns join in for a big build, while there’s a lush a string section in gorgeous “The Hands Of Angels.” Other highlights include the expansive “The World Outside” and dreamy heartbreak ode “Slow Down,” where he sings, “When I close my eyes, I live white lies.”

There’s a certainly a lack of new romantic balladeers these days, and here Steve Schultz has stepped up to the plate, and hit it out of the park.

Bio

Singer-songwriter Steve Schultzs uplifting introspection as a lyricist and anthemic musicality has garnered him favorable comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Ben Folds. After a well-received debut, the Hudson Valley, New York based artist returns with Over The Edge, a watershed album of creativity with fresh pop-rock instrumentation and timeless songcraft.

Steve has received airplay on multiple radio stations, and been a featured guest on many radio and television shows. In 2010, he was awarded admission to the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame writers workshop, and had previously participated in the esteemed ASCAP "I Create Music" Expo in Los Angeles and the Columbia Arts Team's annual Songwriting Festival, featuring Paul Leka ("Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye) and Jeff Silbar ("Wind Beneath My Wings"). He has shared the stage with such notables as Jeff Silbar, John Powhida (of The Rudds), and Chris Cubeta & the Liars Club. He is also the lead singer and keyboardist for the in-demand rock and soul cover band In the Pocket (a.k.a. ITP). Recently, he built Bottoms Up Recording Studio with bassist Seth Rivers and drummer Chris Snykus.

His richly emotive vocals, refined piano playing, and refreshing sincerity are captivatingly distinct. The essential elegance of Shadow with just piano and vocal is a stirringly stately what could have been love song. With soulful boldness he sings: Well, it's amazing how the time has passed/Between us nothing seems to change/You live your life and I live mine/That's what we became. The uptempo A Kind Of Faith is unflinchingly positive, buoyant with rollicking piano, shimmering organ, and a goose-bump inducing sax solo. With sweeping strings, the stunning Eldridge Avenue is bittersweetly emotional. Its a song about chasing your dreams in the face of the painful realities of growing up. Thats sort of a metaphor for the life of a musician, Steve says. You see friends around you getting real jobs, buying houses, and having kids. Theyre waiting for you on this mythical avenue, but youre just trying to find your way with your career goals.

Steve began his musical journey in fourth grade playing trumpet, but found his creative path in the life-affirming rock n roll of Bruce Springsteen and the thoughtful piano rock of Billy Joel and Elton John, and later, Ben Folds. In 2007, he issued his debut A Thin Line. He has spent 3 years working on Over The Edge. The album was consumed by building the studio, and achieving the rich sonic tapestry of instrumentation he envisioned to bring his music to life. Most people would have given up and said screw it. I guess Im stubborn or crazy or a little bit of both, he says, recalling studio floods, crunching numbers for budgets, and accommodating busy schedules. The record was engineered and produced by Steve and his friend/bassist Seth Rivers. He launched a successful crowdfunding campaign to offset payments.

Hard to believe it took this long and that I was able to get the quality I did, he says with pride. Three years is a long time. This record took so long I have enough material written for the next one!

Steve is available for full band, acoustic trio, or solo/acoustic performances.
