Bio
Stephen McWhirter is a Christian singer/song writer from the Louisville, KY area, whose self-titled release traverses the landscape of genre, while capturing a sound that is distinctly his own. Ranging from country, to blues, & pop, he is unwilling to force into a box the varying emotions of a life in search of meaning and only finding it in Christ. Born the son of a traveling evangelist, he grew up in church camps all across the United States, where he breathed the Gospel and rustic hymns that would eventually become the roots of his own song writing.
In his teens, he began to rebel and turned towards a life of drugs and alcohol. Around the age of twenty he was reintroduced to the gospel, and after a powerful experience and a great deal of investigation, he found the evidence for Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection to be insurmountable. He began to use his gift as a musician and songwriter to share the gospel.
Stephen’s own story and Scripture pervade every aspect of his song writing. The track “Point Me home,” parallels his journey, and that of many others, with Jesus’ story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-24), and how God longs for all who stray to return to his arms. Also, in the song “Glory Bound,” Stephen captures the traditional hymns of his childhood as he expresses the hope of heaven (2 Corinthians 5:6-8), in light of the loss of his father. In the form of lyric and melody, he captures the journey from separation to salvation, from emptiness to hope, and the ultimate realization that all things come together and have their meaning in Christ (Colossians 1:17).
