"13 Year Old Singer Songwriter CD Release"

News Graphic FEATURE Stephanie Brill: 13-year-old singer/songwriter releases CD Writer: Jennifer Bergen, oreo5@bizwi.rr.com
Her lyrics are called poetic and highly visual, her musicianship, a natural gift, and her vocals, pure and otherworldly.
She writes songs about helping the hopeless children, the harsh reality of love's betrayal...and eating purple Skittles.
That's the only real giveaway that Cedarburg singer/songwriter Stephanie Brill is 13 years old. By all accounts, she is an eclectic amalgam of pure talent, combining a sharp sense of humor with a strong commitment to writing songs that matter...while also having the hilarious time of her middle-school life.
"Writing meaningful music is definitely my passion," said Brill, who recently released her first recorded CD collection of songs, Heartbroken Joker, at North Shore Academy of the Arts (NSAA) in Grafton to an enthusiastic crowd -- friends, family, and local supporters well aware of her musical gifts.
"I love to compose songs -- and depending on my mood, they can be about world poverty or love, or something hilarious my friends and I did," said Brill, an eighth grader at Webster Transitional School, who also performs with Trinity Irish Dance and in school plays and musicals. "Music and performance is such a powerful way for me to express how I'm feeling -- and, it's fun."
So much fun that Brill's mother, Susie, decided to move their family's piano into Stephanie's bedroom for all the writing she was doing.
"When you love something so much, it's not work, and it's clear to me that Steph's passion for music is not work," she related. "As parents, we've always encouraged her do what she loves. But I'm amazed at this as much as everyone else."
Brill's theory and songwriting mentor of four years, NSAA's Angela Mack could not agree more.
"Many months of serious brainstorming, writing, composing, and editing went into the 10 songs on Stephanie's CD -- humorous songs, as well as instrumentals -- and I'm extremely excited for Stephanie and this outstanding accomplishment," said Mack.
"I'm deeply impressed with her musicianship, level of imagery, and the insight and poetry of her lyrics, which reflect a great level of
musical maturity." One song is a social commentary on the pitfalls, as well as the
addictive qualities of Facebook. Another focuses on giving as much as possible to help homeless, poverty-stricken children. Others are lyrical piano instrumentals -- haunting and lovely.
But...purple Skittles?
"Sometimes my friends and I do crazy things," explained Brill, "and we've made lots of memories, so sometimes those little jokes find their way into my songs.
"And as fun as it is," she continued, "it's been a lot of hard work. Ever since I was very young, my Mom noticed how I reacted and related to music -- and quickly signed me up for piano lessons.
"Steph's first piano teacher discovered that she had near- perfect pitch, and she flew through several levels of piano books very quickly," said Susie Brill. "When she began with Angela in fourth grade, Steph wrote her first song, and Angela's been encouraging and working with her ever since."
Four years of hard work, and counting.
"I have a mission that drives me," Stephanie said, whose musical inspirations include the Eagles, Elton John, and alt-rocker Regina Specter.
"I'm angry that this generation of music is based on things that don't seem to have much meaning to me -- partying, cheating, getting crazy," she continues. "It's not good for me to listen to that kind of music -- it doesn't inspire me in any way."
"I guess this collection of music is my way of saying, 'I wish our music had more meaning. These songs definitely do to me.'"
As for the name Heartbroken Joker?
"It reflects all the kinds of imagery in life that speak to me -- a class discussion about world poverty, relationship issues and what they means to my friends and me, and just plain funny things we do," Brill concluded. "If I become famou - News Graphic

Bio

In the summer of 2011, at age 12, Stephanie Erin Brill started “going rogue” performing at the edge of festivals, catching interest from passersby. The feedback from those listening encouraged her to pursue bigger stages.

Today at 16, the award winning singer songwriter has penned more than 25 original songs. Stephanie's piano based folky/pop American sound has established her as a “Rising Star” in the SE Wisconsin music scene. Her studio produced EP “Save The Day” is her third release, she’s played major gigs and received a plethora of accolades including two WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) Rising Star nominations, a MAMA (Madison Area Music Association) 1st Chair Award, opened for Grammy award winning songwriter Jon Vezner, been selected for the 2014 Steel Bridge Music Festival, Mile Of Music and the list goes on and on.

Brill’s influences span the past and present and include piano based songwriters Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Billy Joel, Sara Bareilles and Ben folds. This emerging young artist should be on your radar.

With a goal of becoming “The Next Artist To Watch” Stephanie accepted the challenge of creating all new material for her First Studio Produced EP and to assist in “Launching Her Career” to the next level. The highly anticipated collection of 5 original songs, showcase her maturity as a songwriter, as these songs are her strongest and most personal yet. You will be treated to a true taste of piano based Folky/Pop Americana music, with vocals that at times will be rich and powerful, soulful, sweet and gentile.

In the Anton Music Productions Stephanie improved her songwriting arrangements and lyrics under the direction of producer Tony Schueller. Stephanie was assisted on the recording with talented session musicians Dave Schoepke (Willie Porter’s Drummer) andNoah Sugarman “After The Blackout” on bass, along with other noted artists.

“Save The Day” EP was released digitally on April 25, 2014 through Brill’s website and CD Baby. Brill’s Official Music Video supporting the “Save The Day” single and EP was released on April 10th, 2014. In her mask and cape, our super hero takes to the skies, observing the excessive overexposure of today’s pop culture and is determined to “Save the Day”. The producers of this campy music video involved the creative use of “green screen” backgrounds and flying scenes!

Nothing says, “We Believe In You” more than fans putting up their hard earned money to help you realize your dreams. Through a successful Kickstarter campaign, fans of Stephanie Erin Brill committed pledges to offset the cost to press physical copies of the “Save The Day” EP! The physical copies of the EP jacket and disc were released on May 16th, 2014.

At the 2013 Wisconsin Singer Songwriter Series competition, Stephanie’s piano based indie/folk/pop/rock made Milwaukee Journal Sentinel music writer, Piet Levy, eat his words. “And at the end of the night, when 16-year-old Stephanie Erin Brill from Cedarburg walked onstage, I silenced preconceived prejudices that she’d be a lesser talent because she was by far the youngest contestant. It was probably the gazillionth time a musician had sung about a break-up, but…

“SHE BROUGHT A CANDID PERSPECTIVE TO THE SUBJECT MATTER. IT WAS ABOUT THE SONG, AND IN THE END BRILL WON THIRD PLACE.” PIET LEVY (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL)

Stephanie has racked up notable gigs on her home turf including Summer Sounds/Cedarburg and in Milwaukee at the Pabst Theatre, The Wisconsin Center, and on TMJ4’s The Morning Blend, Cedarburg’s Strawberry Fest Main Stage, Miramar Theatre, Cedarburg Cultural Center and Cedarburg Performing Arts Center, Steel Bridge Songfest, WAMI Downtown Alive Musician Showcase and many more….

“A YOUNG, UP AND COMING ARTIST WHO WE’LL ALL BE KEEPING OUR EYES ON” - RICHARD PINNEY SINGER SONGWRITER/MUSIC EXEC

Looking forward the future is bright! The coming summer months will include many live performances at The Miramar Theatre, Mile Of Music, Cedarburg Cultural Center, Steel Bridge Songfest, Waukesha Friday Nights Live, Make Music Madison, Enderis Park, Madison Farmers Market, Summer Sounds, Cedarburg Festivals and many more!

A new group of songs is waiting in the wings.

So stay tuned in the summer of 2014!
