"X96 4-Play, Avalon Theatre, Sep. 4 2008"

"This band is definitely worth writing home about. They had great stage presence and a unique Depeche Mode meets Against Me! sound. They also had a great interaction with the crowd, putting on a great stage show. And one of their songs, Adios, really stood out as a bouncy, memorable tune that you’ll want to listen to over and over again, with a fantastic sing-along chorus you won’t be able to get out of your head. Definitely worth the drive from Ogden!"

Steady Machete
Riots
Independent

Steady Machete = Interpol+ The Cure + Talking Heads
I normally find dancey indie bands really annoying, but Steady Machete is awesome. They are tight as hell and use elements in every song that keep me interested. It’s like a little bit less technical Minus the Bear. Eric Hofer’s vocals have all the conviction and vulnerability of David Byrne’s shaky vocals, yet still add an original element. The breakdown in “Riots” is a perfect example of what kind of newness Steady Machete brings to their genre. Each song has an original guitar part to prevent the album from becoming monotonous or boring. The one criticism I have is that they use the same tonal vibe throughout the entire album, but overall it doesn’t affect the listening experience. You can’t hate a band for keeping things cohesive. –Jon Robertson

""Riots" Reviewed 11/2/2009"

Salt Lake City's Steady Machete throws a curve ball on the opening track of their debut full-length. "Control is Beneath Us" wants to push the band into dance rock territory, when their real home is the spacey, slightly dark and moody, rock arena.

The second track, "Bonnie Parker," is more representative of the record as whole, with its fuzzed-out bass riff and vocals floating around in the ether. The album's title track and centerpiece, "Riots," also proves the band isn't afraid to give a song room to breathe. The dual guitar work and slithering solos allow the track to wander and build through its six minutes.

Throughout the disc, Steady Machete shows its keen sense of atmosphere and dynamics. Though the various electronic flourishes ("Fisticuffs") and dance beats keep things interesting, the band is best served by its brooding rock tendencies.

Bio

Steady Machete is most often described as the love-child between Franz Ferdinand and Muse. Post-punk energy with a feel that ranges from an epic western film to a dark, sweaty dance floor.

Two brothers, Tommy and Eric Hofer, formed Steady Machete in Richmond, VA in 2006. Soon after, the two moved back out west and became serious about performing locally and writing new material. The name was born out of the reference to Johnny Cash being described as “sharp as a razor blade, and steady as a freight train.” With a name and a few songs, the two teamed up with Jake Moran on drums and started working on building a following and creating a new sound for the Salt Lake area.

The band's first EP, 2008's “Fisticuffs”, won the Best Local EP “Posty” from the booking agency Postfontaine as well as being named one of the Top 3 albums of 2008 by Ogden’s music review site, The Local Landing—this despite only ever being a free CD-R given away at shows.

Steady Machete most recently self-released their first full-length album, Riots in October of 2009. One reviewer says, "Steady Machete is awesome. Eric Hofer’s vocals have all the conviction and vulnerability of David Byrne’s shaky vocals, yet still add an original element. The breakdown in “Riots” is a perfect example of what kind of newness Steady Machete brings to their genre."
