"Lost and Found Review"

Who is the Spencer Teeter band? Well, they’re a four member band from Kitchener, Ontario consisting of lead guitarist and vocalist Spencer Teeter, his brother Blake Teeter on drums, Bassist JD Smigelski and Kayla Watson on keyboards. They just independently released their debut album called Lost and Found.
At first listen to Lost and Found, I was surprised that this was a debut album. This album has many hits and catchy songs with beautiful melodies and lots of love songs. I highly recommend this album if you’re looking for a new band to add to your alternative/pop rock style collection of music. Spencer Teeter Band sound similar to other great Canadian pop/rock bands like the Barenaked Ladies and Blue Rodeo, or any other band that incorporates and pleasant blend of keyboards and guitar and the occasional harmonica.
Lost and Found starts with an upbeat song called Maybe I’m Wrong which could easily be one of their first singles. It’s an uplifting song that I find myself singing along to the lyrics “Maybe you’re right now maybe I’m wrong.” This is one of the songs on the albums that remind me of Blue Rodeo. The fantastic thing about the vocals in The Spencer Teeter Band is that his brother Blake does some background singing. Being brothers, Blake’s vocals complement Spencer’s almost perfectly. It’s rare to hear drummers singing anymore. I would have really enjoyed some sort of duet of the two at some point on the album which did not happen.
The next song In My Dreams starts with a short bluesy riff that repeats throughout the song. Once again the melody is very catchy, this time the lyrics delivered in a sharp, fast, rhyme time! Along with this, Spencer displays his first real range of voice, reaching some of the highest notes on the album. It’s the kind of song to sit back and relax to in the summer maybe thinking, what’s in your dreams?
Sooner or Later is a simple song, not as strong as the first two, with a slightly different sound. I notice it the most in Spencer’s vocals. This one reminds me of something of the likes of John Mayer.
Nothing But a Feeling is another upbeat song with a positive mood. The band has a nice blend of instruments here. There are moments of piano fills under and between instrumental guitar sections followed by a drop to just drums, where I find myself clapping along. On top of the drums, Blake jumps in with Spencer on vocals. This is the happiest song on the album. Everyone has one of those songs that make you feel good, and put you in the right mood. This is one of them.
It’s all been fun and games so far but Change My Mind is when album starts to get serious. With lyrics like “You don’t know the half of it! Don’t even try to change my mind.” I don’t like to repeat myself but The Spencer Teeter band is making me in saying this is yet another enjoyable, catchy song.
The world can never have too many love songs, and I have a feeling there will be more to come from STB after the ever so beautiful Glad to be Home. The lyrics really stand out to me on this song. They sound familiar to me, not as if I’ve heard the song before, but in a comforting way. It’s a comfortable song. The way it’s all done reminds me of a Taylor Swift song, weird? I don’t think so, it’s a great love song. The line “Hey hey, where, where hey, hey where did you go,” just flows off the tongue so smoothly. Spencer and Blake sing alternating lines at the climax of the song, just after Spencer lets out a long held note. It ends with single heart piercing (in a good way) piano notes by Kayla. A wonderful ending to a great song.
This is where the album starts to really mellow out. The next three songs are the weakest on the album. 4am is a slow somber song. It’s not a catchy song, and not a song you’d sing along to. But it is a song that would be there for you on those lonely nights after a fight with a loved one.
Pick Up The Phone continues with the same theme. Another sad love song, which I enjoy more than 4am but it’s not nearly as strong as Glad to be Home. Kayla plays the piano as the lead instrument in this one. Spencer sings a few high notes like on In My Dreams. A beautiful demonstration of vocal talent.
To me, Lifting Me Down sounds like a Radiohead song. It’s also similar to the last track. Lead instrument is the keyboards. Not my favourite, although a violin joins in the end which is nice new addition to the record.
The Spencer Teeter Band didn’t want a faded ending which is why I believe they put My Front Door, their heaviest song, at the end to go out with a bang! This is one of my favourite on the album, easily another great single. They drop the sad, depressing mood and kick back to life with the high energy of the crunching guitars. This is an alternative rock song with fantastic electric guitar solo. I recommend anyone to give this one a much deserved listen. A great ending to the album.
In Conclusion, The Spencer Teeter Band has released an excellent debut album. It has a variety of upbeat, fun, positive songs and slow, mellow, love songs to accompany multiple moods at any time of day. (Yes even at 4am) Fans of Barenaked Ladies and Blue Rodeo would enjoy Lost and Found. “Maybe I’m wrong”… or maybe I’m right. I’ll let the listener decide for themselves, but it’s definitely worth a buy. 4 out of 5 stars.
