"Song of the Week"

What Did I Do is the debut single for up and coming chanteuse Sophie Delila. Sophie already has an impressive CV having written for Duffy, co- written with the legendary Don Black and the lovely Judie Tzuke.
Sophie has also toured with Plan B and whilst all that was going on she remained an important cog in the French Collective Nouvelle Vague (New Wave). What Did I Do will feature on Sophie’s forthcoming album My Life Could Use A Remix.

Sophie grew up in a musical French family in Paris. Ray Charles’ manager was a family friend and Marvin Gaye was a frequent house guest. At the tender age of 17 Sophie won a scholarship to the prestigious Berkley School of Music in Boston. She was in very good company as other famous ex-alumni include Keith Jarrett, Quincy Jones, Pat Metheny, Donald Fagen, Diana Krall and Melissa Etheridge. Now living in South London the well-travelled Sophie has worked with Aleks Josh, Jack Savoretti and production teams Monarchy and The Suppliers.

What Did I Do is a song about an old friend in New York who one day told Sophie he no longer wanted to be friends. Listening to and watching the gorgeous Sophie we think he must be mad. - The Hit Sheet

"Sophie Delila - Profile"

French singer Sophie Delila has been in the background for a couple of years - singing backing vocals for Plan B and co-writing Duffy's next album.

But she steps into the limelight with debut single What Did I Do, out October 29.

Sophie told me, "Music can transport people to a different world. That's what I want to try to do".

Her parents were friends with soul greats Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye, so music came naturally to the 29 year old, who lives in London. On next year's debut album, My Life Could Use a Remix, she laughed, "Everyone's life needs remixing sometimes, whether love, or what you eat". - Daily Star

"Sophie Delila - Jazz Cafe, London, ****"

Thursday 13th June: The French singer songwriter Sophie Delila takes to the stage at London’s iconic music venue the Jazz Café and joining her on stage was a full band. With just the ground floor opened to the general public, the room was actually quite full. And we were all in for a treat, as Delila provides the audience with some great vocals, a master class in song writing and a great live performance.

Songs from the night included Bound To Fall, which has been released as a single and available to purchase on iTunes. Quite a lot of Delila songs are written about break ups and also about friendships falling apart, they are very cleverly written, a different take on a topic that has definitely been sung about, almost refreshing. These songs included the tracks My Life Could Use A Remix and What Did I Do (which was a personal favourite of the night). One of the songs In My Bed was written with the help of a friend the audience and is about a time that you are having a dream about a person, but waking up and having someone else in your bed. This song was another favourite for me, and involved the audience helping out with some ‘oooos’.

We were also treated to her well-known cover of Rihanna’s Diamonds, there are a lot of covers of this song floating around the Internet, but this by far has to be one of my favourites.

Nearing the end of the gig, we were treated to Delila and a member of the band creating a song right on the stage; by using a loop machine, you very rarely get to see artists using a loop machine, but it is always great to make a gig special and I love seeing music being made. Great touch. I also do love a good band backing a singer, it gives you an opportunity to hear the songs properly, the way they are meant to be heard.

Delila without question is a great singer and a great songwriter, I’m sure we will be hearing more things from her throughout the year, especially as at the gig she announced her album will be released soon (looking forward to hearing it). The team here wish her all the best.

"Sophie Delila Has a Great Amount of Love and Talent"

Sophie Delila wants a remix, but we just want more of her beautiful voice and gorgeous melodies. Life of a Rock Star™ hears Sophie Delila as the voice that will ring in 2013. She has already worked with Plan B, Duffy, MIKA and performs live regularly as a member of Nouvelle Vague. We love her song "What Did I Do" is out now on Freak'N See Records and are addicted to "My Life Could Use A Remix" co-written by Don Black (Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and James Bond theme tunes).

This Paris born talent grew up with parents who were close family friends with the manager of Ray Charles and it was not unusual him and Marvin Gaye to be at her dinner table . She attended Berklee School of Music in Boston on scholarship for her early recognized talent at the age of 17.

Sophie Delila has lived in New York and London and brings her life experiences to her songs. She will be releasing her new album in 2013, "My Life Could Use A Remix" with Universal Records.

Life of a Rock Star™ editor Nicole Hanratty recently interviewed Sophie Delila and asked her about her colorful upbringing, inspirations and where she is headed.

NICOLE: Hi Sophie!

SOPHIE: Hi!

NICOLE: I'm so glad we got to connect. I want to ask you so many questions. I'm so fascinated by your story and your music. Maybe can you just start by telling me where you are now and what you have going on?

SOPHIE: Sure. I am currently working on some tracks and I've got a show in London on Wednesday, so I've got rehearsal tomorrow. Yeah, just keeping on doing everything, really, the studio and the live thing, which is very enjoyable, both of them.

NICOLE: Your album that's out is "My Life Could Use a Remix," right?

SOPHIE: It's not out yet, though.

NICOLE: OK, it's coming out. It's just the first song that I've heard?

SOPHIE: Yeah. There's an EP which is called "What Did I Do," which is the single and then a couple more tracks. The album itself will be available to be released next year. - Life of a Rockstar

"Interview with Sophie Delila"

She may have only released one album at the age of 26, but Parisian-bred pianist, guitarist, writer, singer and producer Sophie Delila has a formidable lifetime of musical knowledge at her elegant fingertips.

Raised in a musical family, her Algerian-born father is an accomplished piano player who had Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye round for dinner when Sophie was a baby.

"My grandmother also taught piano and my mum was a singer," says Sophie, "so there was a lot of blues, jazz and classical around. The piano lessons were a bit of a pain at the time, but I'm grateful for them now."

At 18, she won a scholarship to the revered Berklee College Of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

"I didn't really like it," shrugs Sophie. "But what I did discover there was gospel and jazz."
After moving to New York, she transferred to London and Sophie's album, Hooked, recorded with Duffy producer Steve Booker, shows her wanderlust has reaped dividends.

Delila's the real deal with an organic confident sound, strong distinctive vocals and a superb band put together via MySpace.

Her songs range from the harmony-rich funk of Nature Of The Crime to the transcendent Another World - a beautiful undiscovered anthem.

"Steve and I were very compatible straight away," says Sophie. "Although we have very different influences, when we combine it creates something special."

Sophie plays the Bar And Kitchen, Hoxton, London, tomorrow.

Bio

London based French born singer songwriter Sophie Delila has duetted with Plan B on tour and Radio1’s Live Lounge, written for the likes of Duffy and regularly performs live as a member of acclaimed French collective Nouvelle Vague.

Her new single ‘Bound To Fall’ (released 13th May on Freak N See Records) was co-written with American singer-songwriter Julian Velard and inspired by the death of a friend who passed away in an avalanche accident. In Sophie’s words the song is about ‘the highs and lows of life, the higher you get, the bigger the fall could be. It’s about enjoying big moments as life is short.’ The single is taken from the album “My Life Could Use a Remix” due later this year.

Born into a musical household in Paris (Ray Charles manager was a close family friend, and house guests in their Parisian home included the great Marvin Gaye), Sophie’s story so far could hardly be described as typical. Winning a scholarship to the prestigious Berkley School of Music in Boston at the age of seventeen, Sophie moved to the US and ended up working in various studios and gigging regularly in New York. Having moved to London six years ago, she is now established in South West London as an accomplished songwriter and producer in her own right. Her windowless studio near Putney Bridge has provided her with the perfect opportunity to hone her craft, working with the likes of Aleks Josh, Jack Savoretti, and productions teams Monarchy and The Suppliers.

Following a sold out show at The Borderline last year, Sophie will be playing across the UK throughout 2013 and at the Wilderness Festival on 8th August. Tickets available from all usual outlets.
