Bio
Since 2005, Son of Dad have been aiming to achieve one thing only: play fun, energetic and entertaining live shows. While this took a good few years to come to fruition, the six member band (half of whom are on horns), are now enjoying the some great gigs and enthusiastic crowds around the country. Their highly danceable and often catchy style is heavily influenced by the ‘90s ska and pop punk bands from America, the two-tone bands from England in the ‘80s as well as the new-old sounds of current bands and artists like The Aggrolites and Chris Murray.
Over the past couple of years, Son of Dad have toured through Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Perth, as well as winning the SA state final of the National Campus Band Competition. In 2009, the band were chosen by Carclew Youth Arts to undertake a regional tour of Kangaroo Island, which was gracefully accepted and introduced them to the real benefits and drawbacks of the touring lifestyle. Not long after completing this tour, in early 2010, Son of Dad were added to the Artist Roster for Chopdog Promotions, an amazing, DIY, Sydney based promo and record label. Chopdog Promotions provide the band, and the national ska and punk scene, with some serious support and respect.
Between the staples of local shows, small and large festival appearances and the odd wedding and birthday, Son of Dad have been lucky enough to share the stage with international acts Streetlight Manifesto (USA), The Real Deal (CAN), The English Beat (UK/USA), The Toasters (USA), The Planet Smashers (CAN), Dan Potthast (USA), Chris Murray (USA) and Superman Is Dead (Bali) as well as locals on the Australian ska scene Area 7, The Porkers, Los Capitanes, The Resignators, Chris Duke and the Royals, King Cannons, Hightime, The Strange Tenants & Lonee Tunes. They also played across the road from Carlos Santana one night!
Having released three EPs in their time, late 2012 will see the release of their debut 12 track album, The Best Life.
“...everyone should aim to play music like these guys do, fun fun fun with talent to boot... Son Of Dad are a must on anyone’s list of great Australian bands to see.”
Hollie Oates - Renegades Empire Magazine
“...they demonstrated the sort of polished mastery of Third Wave Ska that make me wonder why they haven't tried their luck with an American label before.”
Ryan Winter - db Magazine
“The band have copped flak from some corners for sounding too American, but conversely, if Less Than Jake’s Hello Rockview, Reel Big Fish’s Turn The Radio Off or any album by Mustard Plug holds a special place in your record collection, then this EP is a must buy.”
Owen Heitmann - Rip It Up
“It’s always good fun seeing these guys... They’re just really f**king good at playing ska music.”
Ryan Winter - Renegades Empire Magazine
