"Smokes examine the pain and privilege of being human on new single “Porn” — listen"

Last year, Montreal’s Smokes let loose Zone Eater, a debut album we called “both abrasive and comforting.” For follow-up Wayne Death, due out in 2017, the band continues to force us to confront that which we’re unwilling to acknowledge: the ugly truths about human nature, and perhaps most importantly, about love and the cruelty that can fuel it.

To preview the upcoming sophomore record, Smokes have today shared lead single “Porn”. A fuzzy and warped psych pop cut that recalls Thee Oh Sees at times, it uses the idea of pornography to talk about so much more than sexual or physical satisfaction. Here, Smokes examine the ways in which despite our deep human connection, we often tend to treat one another with total disregard, as though we can’t separate fantasy from real life. “You can do anything you want to do/ It can do anything you want it to,” they sing on part of the track.

Of course, there are some more literal interpretations, as well. “The lyrics ‘pornography killed my computer’ are no joke,” the band’s Nick Maas tells Consequence of Sound. “My laptop has been defeated twice by a growing heap of porn-related viruses, and is essentially a huge paperweight now. There are many levels of meaning to this song.” - Consequence of Sound

"PREMIERE: CELEBRATE YOURSELF WITH "LEMONLIME" BY SMOKES"

Smokes plays with an insane but awe-inspiring mixture of Wolf Parade-y pop chaos, Built to Spill-y guitar wizardry, punky grit, orchestral grandeur, and glam attitude. - Noisey

"Smokes @ Bar Robo on Thursday"

For their album Zone Eater, Montreal band Smokes took to a massive studio space with 30-foot ceilings in order to lay down the drums. The thunderous result set the tone for the rest of the record — a collection of gritty, shout-laden rock songs brightened by howling dashes of violin.

The four-piece's sound is intelligent, hard-hitting, and refreshingly original. - CBC

"Stream: Smokes’ debut album Zone Eater: Montreal indie rockers pinpoint their vision with upcoming LP"

“Maas’ confessional lyrics on tracks like “Lemonlime” show their evolution into a band with a mission. Its a record densely packed with heart and wild instrumentation.” - Consequence of Sound

"Frog Eyes / PS I Love You / Smokes"

“With ‘Snakeskin,’ the band demonstrated a sound reminiscent of fellow Montrealers Silver Mt. Zion, with interplay between stunning strings and raging rhythms, but with a pared-down, poppier sensibility” - Exclaim.ca

"[LISTEN] SMOKES – SNAKESKIN"

“Montreal’s Smokes entice you into their lair with some clever contemporary pop laced with southern gothic blues. Once you are in their grasp they fling you against the wall with a sonic climatic blast.” - Ride the Tempo

"STREAM: Smokes – 'Lemonlime'"

"Lemonlime" by local four-piece Smokes hits you in the gut and lifts you back up again. And you won't be able to get it out of your head. - Killer Baby Tomatoes

"NOBUNNY, Smokes, and Pale Lips – Live at Le Ritz – November 12th, 2015 – Montreal, QC"

“(Smokes’ set) was a complex, emotionally-driven sound-off, lead with great intensity and showmanship by frontman Nick Maas...with hands and voice trembling, he belted out gut-wrenching lyrics that were both tender and brutal, along with explosive bursts on guitar.” - Bucket List Reviews

"POP madness | CROSSS + Smokes + Walrus"

"Smokes killed it, as usual. The tone of the vocals always pleases me, in that it sounds like Nick Maas is singing through an echoing tin can strung from his bedroom to yours. That they have Patrick Cruvellier ripping back on some serious violin just adds an element of beautiful, swirling motion to songs that are already rocking and rolling through the ether in your brain." - Bandmark

"Exclusive Premiere: "Unlucky" EP by Smokes"

"Listening to Smokes is like watching kids play with fireworks inside of a gunpowder plant - you never know when it's gonna go from controlled chaos to a raging inferno." - Midnight Poutine

Smokes — Zone Eater

- BRBR

Bio

For Nick Maas, queer songwriter and singer for Smokes, the past several years have been the most challenging and ultimately revealing of his life to date. As he has worked to transform his own mind into an ally and unite a fractured identity, so too has his band become a sleek vessel for communication. The dark and delightful art rock perpetrated by Smokes is a heady mix of post-punk and weirdo pop, but the truth as Maas sees it can be found just below the surface if you look. So often, the qualities we find repulsive in others can be found in our own hearts, dormant or otherwise obscured by ego. It is our duty to unearth these buried truths, and to surrender to them. Ambivalence and neglect kill just as surely as a knife.

Smokes has performed at festivals such as Pop Montreal, NXNE, Sled Island, Canadian Music Week, the Flourish Festival, and the Passovah Summer Festival.  They’ve shared the stage with acts such as PS I Love You, Frog Eyes, Honus Honus, NOBUNNY, No Joy, Car Seat Headrest, and Doldrums.
