The annual celebration of music from Western Canada turns 20 this year. The ceremony and the accompanying BreakOut West festival will take place in Calgary. This is the third time that the event has taken place in the city.

Description:
2022 Western Canadian Music Award nominee Smilin’ Rylan writes and performs catchy, fun and honest children’s music in every style imaginable – loved by kids, supported by teachers and approved by parents. His live performances are described as “Enthusiastic, entertaining and energetic!” With a background in education, Smilin’ Rylan brings together universal themes, important lessons and great music in what’s been called “A winning formula!”
New: Smilin' Rylan's Percussion Playshop:
- Smilin' Rylan can facilitate multiple and affordable drum/shaker making "Playshops" for all ages. He's an experienced in this field with 8+ years experience as an elementary school music teacher, and holds degrees in both music and education. Plus, he supplies all the materials (except optional tables and chairs), and only needs a space!
- The Playshop is 30-35mins. Approx half the time is spent making instruments, the other half is spent learning how to play them (through various drum circle games and rhythm activities). The kids are encouraged to bring their instruments to Smilin' Rylan's stage show where he features them in a number of songs. It's been highly successful!
Note about Musical Performances:
- On stage Smilin' Rylan performs as a solo act with a specially mixed backing-track, which means you experience the sound of a full band with the affordability, flexibility and logistical ease of a solo artist
- He brings lots of (clean) props so all kids can join in the fun, including a bubble machine - which kids LOVE!
- In 2022, Smilin' Rylan will be headlining the Airdrie Children's Festival
Bio:
Smilin’ Rylan grew up in Hay River, NT but now lives in Banff with his family. He’s a multi-instrumentalist who's earned degrees in Music and Education. A longtime performer, he began writing songs for his students while teaching in Saskatoon. Bringing together universal themes and important lessons, he now writes and performs catchy, fun and honest children’s music in every style imaginable!
Smilin' Rylan believes that quality children's music should actively engage kids, even if it's their first time listening. Whether by singing along or doing fun movements, they should be able to immediately participate - and parents should enjoy it too!
He is currently partnered with two charities close to his heart, the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital Foundation (Saskatoon, SK) and the Smilin' Rylen Foundation (Houston, TX). He supports by organizing benefit concerts, offering free performances, and donating proceeds of album sales.
Smilin' Rylan has written and recorded two full-length children's albums, and performed everywhere from Whistler to Toronto, the NWT to Texas, and even Mexico. He has three official music videos, 29.6K views on his Youtube channel, 23.7K Spotify streams, 11.1K Apple Music streams, and plays regularly on Stingray Music.
