One region at a time, Martins Ferry, Ohio native Slick Watts is stamping his mark on the hip hop world with Kashi Kicks. Yep, at this point in the short lived, global life of hip hop, even indie rappers step in the game with their own shoe endorsements. Add a mixtape release, with quick rising DJ Mick Boogie (“25 To Life”), to growing MySpace listens and the seedlings of a hood movement seem imminent.


Slick has yet to gain traction with major labels and networks, but the self proclaimed Kevin Garnett of the rap game is no stranger to the hard grind; just que up "Why Don’t You" on Slick’s MySpace to feel the hunger pangs. Maybe this summer will spell upgrade for Slick as last year did for Boston’s "Big Ticket." However, Ohio is a tiny market to the music industry, so home court advantage is limited; Slick, the baller turned street author, needs to consistently win on the road if he wants a title in hip hop. He uses an in-house production team, his personal tales of struggle and a crispy rap delivery to appeal outside of the Midwest region. Yo! Raps recently got up with Slick to talk barrowed lines, a future legacy and beatsmiths.


Is it difficult to get the industry's attention being from a small town in Ohio?
Yea, coming from a small town is always going to make it harder to get noticed. But I think the moves we made in 2007 along with the fact that I'm not from a major city in Ohio has helped out a lot. I've got good relationships with a lot of people in the major cities. It also doesn’t hurt to have Mick Boogie hosting your CD either. Mick's one of the biggest DJ's in the world.

Is it tempting to stick to the indie root considering the failing state of the conventional music industry?
Definitely! Things are changing in the music industry. But at the same time rappers just got to change their hustle up. There's still ways to make money off of rap. I can't say whether I'm going to stay indie or not. I'll just wait until the opportunity presents itself and make the best decision I possibly can.

What other towns have been showing the most love to your movement?
Columbus, Cleveland, Sandusky, Pittsburgh and the O.V. have definitely been showing me the most love. Big shout out to everybody in The Land that has been holding me down and the C.O. as well. I'm definitely trying to come to the Natti and get it popping as well when the CD drops.

What was it like working with Mick Boogie?
An honor! Anytime you can have a DJ like Mick saying your music is straight. It's an honor. He's doesn’t just put his name behind anything! A lot of cats will do anything for a check but he isn't like that.

Did you guys really connect or was it just phone calls and emails?
With his schedule and all the moves he was making, it was kind of hard to stay in touch the way I wanted to but whenever me or my manager needed to holler at him he always hollered back. My next mixtape is going to be hosted by him as well. So I'm trying to work closer with him on this one.

What projects are you currently working on?
Just my mixtape which is "untitled" right now. Real excited about that. My shoe sponsor Kashi Kicks will be presenting, Mick Boogie will be hosting, my man BBanga and Ivy League Productions from Columbus, who has worked with Wayne, Santana and Cam, will be doing most of the beats. We're going hard in 2008 no doubt.

What producers are shaping the Slick Watts sound and which musicians influence them?
I deal with a lot of cats when it comes to production. Major League is our in house producer so I'll definitely have something hot from him. My man Paramount from Tennessee aka the hottest producer in the south. Kore Luv with LuvStyle Beatz is from around my way he definitely got some heat. Killah Kalam from the Zoo Boys look forward to working with him and BBanga he produced "Suck It Or Not" with Wayne and Cam. I just linked with him. Shout out to Banger and his manager Kwame look forward to making big moves in 2008 with them.

Why shout out Lil Wayne and Jay-Z in "Slick Watts Show?"
Jay-Z to me is the greatest breathing so that was an easy one. And Lil Wayne is the hottest rapper in America right now. Those are levels that I'm working towards so I shouted them out. There are a lot of hot rappers though. I could put a lot of different names in there.

Do you consider yourself a biter since you used those Jay bars in "Why Don't You?" Why or why not?
Nah I don’t consider myself a biter! It fit with the theme of the song and I borrowed it from Jay. No big deal. I do my thing I don’t really need lyrics from somebody else. If music was the NBA, who are you in '08?
Kevin Garnett. I feel like any team that can get me on the squad is going to completely change there franchise around. My style is universal. I don’t feel like there's anything that I can’t do behind the mic. Any kind of song you need I feel like I can deliver it. That's how K.G. is he can do it all. Plays hard every night. That's the way I go on the mic. So it would definitely be K.G. Also with him the whole team eats. He looks out for his team-mates.

We've heard these same tales of hood life and dodging prison so many times. Why choose hip hop music to express yourself?
Because hip hop is the ultimate freedom of expression. Anything your feeling or going through you can get in the booth and get off your chest. I don’t know too many other platforms where you can do something like that. My story isn't your typical rapper story. And I don’t harp on the same things most rappers harp on. There's way more to Slick Watts than the stories most these rappers make-up.

What else do you do well in life?
It was either hooping or rapping with me. That's all I've known my whole life. So that’s the things that I'm best at. I've always hooped and I've always rapped. There wasn't time for much else.

How does that tie into your creative process?
Just the whole competitiveness that goes into both. They’re very similar. Anytime I stepped on the court I wanted to be the best one out there. Same thing with rap, anytime I get on a track I want to be the best at it. Add that to an "I won’t lose mentality" and that’s basically gives you Slick Watts.

Why call yourself a star like everyone else who wants to be famous?
Everyone else doesn't have the grind to be a star. It's easy to wake up one day and say I'm going to be a star but what are the steps that you’re taking to get there? I'm on my grind 24/7. Can't anybody tell me I don’t go hard at this. And this is just the beginning of the BittaSweet/WattsyMusic movement.

What will music fans say about Slick Watts in ten years?
That Slick Watts was one of the best. He didn’t lie like most of these rappers do in there rhymes. That he gave back to the community and never forgot where he came from. Never stopped grinding and always appreciated the fans and their support.

What will the hood say?
That Slick was one of the best. Never claimed to be something that he wasn’t. Always looked out for the hood. Gave people jobs helped in the community and kept it real. Never stopped showing love and never forgot where he came from.

What is Slick Watts all about? "Slick Watts is about Family!! I'm about grinding until I make it and not stopping until I do. Making real music for everybody no matter what walk of life. I'm about putting the OV on the map and showing the young people that anything's possible if you really want it." Slick Watts is doing just that with a vengeance. Brought up in the projects of Martins Ferry, Ohio. Slick Watts was lucky enough to see the folks doing their thing on the streets and those doing the right thing "I was able to make the right choices and stick to hoop." After four years of basketball in college, his dreams of being in the NBA didn't pan out, so Slick chose to follow his next talent: the rap game. While he played around with rhymes and poetry at the early age of 16 with his cousins. Slick deicded to get more involved in it on his own while he was in college. "People was feeling me, so I just went from there." he stated. What makes Slick Watts' music different and separates him from the rest are his realness and his lyrics. "A lot of rappers are on that bull right now. Secondly lyrics...but not over your head lyrics! I'm not here to trick nobody but at the same time I'm not here to talk to you like a 5th grader. Of rap surnames, Lil and Young seem to be the current faves, regardless of age. When someone says they're "Slick," you probably think back to Slick Rick or maybe even A Pimp Named Slickback from the Cartoon Network's Boondocks.

Since the homie John Ross has been blogging about Slick Watts' music for a second, I had to find out for myself if the name fit in this case. How slick is this man?

It's true, the native of Martins Ferry—just over the Ohio border from West Virginia—was a college basketball star (ballin!). He garnered four nominations at this year's Ohio Hip-Hop Awards.

And you can't front on the wow cast of his recent mixtape with Mick Boogie, 25 to Life. It features diverse guests like Dipset's Tom Gist, No Limit's C-Murder and the underground grit of Termanology. Watts has also rocked mixtapes and tracks with France's DJ Ophax. Oui oui.

On Friday, Watts will celebrate his birthday with a show at Major Woody's. The '80s baby is bringing in former G-Unit-turned-Curtis enemies M.U. and Domination, a.k.a. the Gorilla Gang (as seen in the Beef 3 DVD), plus Rocky Fontaine. The night will be hosted by Power 107 DJ City.

Impressive, but is it slick? I went to the source for some pointers.

Welcome Slick Watts to the Rapmullet review section. He's rollin' with the Mick Boogie/League Crew co-sign. Ohio is having quite the run right now; plenty of quality MCs out there and the Cavs are in the NBA finals. I've been hearing a lot of lyrically proficient MCs of late and Slick Watts is no different. I'm amazed every week with how many MCs are pushing lyrics as their main focus while the mainstream continues to push the lyrically devoid. On the real, that alone should really really make you look at this game and see what's going on.

"Like A Child" is like a grand production. The build up got me feeling like I'm about the hear a lyrically apocalypse. I'm def diggin' the bars, flow was a lil choppy but a great overall sound; can never go wrong with a vocal sample unless it's from Pee Wee Herman or some shit. I like the club/radio potential with a song like "Oski Woski" but its not really something I would bump dolo in my ride. Cats are def having fun with the music. "Stop Hatin" got Watts and Tom Gist trading bars, shit was so fly Mick Boogie had to bring it back to the top one time. "Nothing Lasts Forever" was my joint, something about the flow on this one. Watts stepped up the delivery and got bars stuck in my head...which is a good thing. This is that rewind track right here. I didn't care for the hook that much on the Termanology assisted "Hip Hop". Watts breaking shit down lovely, keeping everyone on their toes...MCs, DJs, and even critics. If I had to pick a single to push it would be "Yall Gonna See". That shit got a serious knock to it and the word play is top notch too. "F U Pay Me Remix" got Watts showing some versatility with that slow flow. "Dolla And A Dream" just sounds like Ohio to me. I can picture the rims shinning on an old school ride listening to this joint.

I think it's safe to say Slick Watts got his shit together as an MC. One thing I like listening for on artist mixtapes is all the different elements. The flow; can the MC rock different tempos while maintaining the content. The lyrics' is the MC actually saying something or just stringing along a couple fly lines in-between some bullshit. The sound; can those same tempos rock over happy beats or block beats. The hooks; can the MC formulate an actual viable song with a catchy/mind sticking hook. A lot of the time shit doesn't come together like that on every single track but you hear certain elements of each throughout which to me lets me know it's only a matter of time before the MC gets them all to mesh and the overall sound is perfected. The old saying goes: When opportunity knocks, answer the door, and for Martins Ferry, Ohio native, Slick Watts, he's answered the door often. From early on hip- hop was a hobby but took a backseat for his love of basketball, it enabled him to travel out of the Ohio Valley and see what else the world offers. But with a successful college career on the court what's the next step? A new challenge emerges: turning his hobby into his passion.

Being a newcomer in the game Slick has been able to garner a lot of attention outside of the O.V., winning awards and accolades. His hustle and determination has enabled him to be able to do shows, go on tours, and being sponsored by clothing company Stall & Dean.

Slick's ability to become a chameleon within the bass lines makes him to look out for in the future. Just like on the court versatility helps a lot. AllHipHop spoke with the burgeoning artist to see what is happening in his world of music, sports, and things in between.

AllHipHop.com: Who is Slick Watts?

Slick Watts: Slick Watts, is an up and coming rapper from a small town in Ohio, [called] Martins Ferry. That was focused on his dreams after college, and just trying to do big things, and been working real hard at it.

AllHipHop.com: What sets you different from the pack?

Slick Watts: I think , basically, the hard work, putting in hard work- and being a universal artist; I can get on a track with anybody and I'm not stuck in one box where a lot of people are just lyrical, or, just rap southern or whatever. I think I can do a little bit of everything, so I think kinda separates me. Also, a lot of artists aren't humble; I'm always willing to learn. I'm always trying to be at where ever I need to be at conventions or whatever, trying to soak up everything I can.

AllHipHop.com: Oh, you played A.A.U. ball?

Slick Watts: Well, A.A.U., and I was player of the year my senior year in high school. Division III I was player of the year in the state of Ohio.

AllHipHop.com: How's you get into rap? Was it something you did to pass the time between games?

Slick Watts: Yeah, that's what it was. It was like basically just playing ball passing the time on the buses and stuff, and I had raps from when I was younger, me and my cousins had a group which didn't pan out. I got a lot of good responses everyone was telling me I was nice, but at the time I was just so focused on basketball. So basically, it was just always a hobby and then I sat down with my manager after I was done with college and decided this is what I wanted to do with my life.

AllHipHop.com: So when you finished college, why didn't you try to further your B-ball career?

Slick Watts: Well, after my junior year going into my regular senior year of college. I would have had a chance to go overseas and play if I would of played my regular year, but I had to sit out a year. So, after that it was just like on to the next one; and this was next for me.

AllHipHop.com: Due to injury or something?

Slick Watts: No, just not doing the right stuff in school. [Laughs]

AllHipHop.com: Who were your influences?

Slick Watts: Tupac was a big influence for me. Biggie. I was just really into entertainers like Michael Jackson just seeing how they controlled the crowd and being onstage and stuff like that.

AllHipHop.com: How'd you link up with Ohio DJ Mick Boogie for the 25 to Life Mixtape?

Slick Watts: I just hooked up with him because at the time we were doing a lot of research and he was the biggest DJ in Ohio at the time, now he's moved to NYC. He did that Viva La Hov Mixtape that did something crazy like 600,000 downloads in a day or whatever. He was the guy to do it with and I sent him some of my music. He liked it and we just went on from there.

AllHipHop.com: For an unsigned artist, you really have some clout, how'd you link with Stall & Dean Clothing?

Slick Watts: It was actually a blessing, man. I was up in Cleveland for the new music seminar and we [publicist] had been talking to Tone Capone Executive VP of Universal/ Motown/SRC. We were actually meeting with Tone, sitting down with him trying to pick his brain just getting different information and taking notes. The Director of Marketing for Stall & Dean actually walked up to Tone and was talking to him at the time. He remembered me from the Underground Music Awards from the year before and it kind of just snowballed from there. Just being in the right place at the right time, and being affiliated with the right people.

AllHipHop.com: New opportunities open doors...

Slick Watts: Right. Right. When he heard the music and seen the work ethic he was definitely on board. So, big shout out to Rikers of Stall & Dean.

AllHipHop.com: What was it like winning the 'Best Midwest Artist' at this past years Underground Music Awards in NYC?

Slick Watts: Yeah, that was definitely the goal. The year before I was up for it and lost. To actually win it that was definitely the goal, and it let us know that we're moving in the right direction, cause a lot of times you know I might get frustrated and think we're just standing still but, it let us know we're moving in the right direction and people were checking for me outside of Ohio. It’s the biggest thing to happen to date.

AllHipHop.com: You got a club joint with Mike Jones called “Danger” it has a different feel and vibe to it from the other joints that I've heard.

Slick Watts: See, that's what I was trying to do. Basically, I'm always trying to go a little bit further, so a lot of people would put me in a hole like, 'Oh, he's just a mixtape artist.' So, I wanted to show them that I could get away from the mixtapes for a little and make national hit records.

AllHipHop.com: I see showing depth and also not just being one dimensional. How'd you link with Mike for the track?

Slick Watts: Just through networking, you know. I don't know who Arica [publicist] had talked to or whatever. We were networking, I actually did a show with him last month down here in the O.V., which was a big success and we actually performed “Danger” at the show, so, not only did we come together but we also did the song too and it snowballed into that.

AllHipHop.com: How'd you get to be part of the Russ Parr bus tour?

Slick Watts: It was basically my manager and the people who voted. Basically, I put my song in for the Russ Parr show competition called “Yes We Can”, which was on AllHipHop.com on the day of the election. They [the show staff] really liked the song, and the fans voted me in. It was a great opportunity Letoya Luckett was there, and Yo Gotti. There was all kind of people there.

AllHipHop.com: Hey you can't go wrong with a presidential song especially on that monumental day. That's a bonafide winner.

Slick Watts: Exactly.

AllHipHop.com: Any other projects that you are working on?

Slick Watts: Right now, I just hooked up with world famous DJ Fresh he's on Cleveland 107.9fm he's actually playing “Yada Yada Yada” there. He also has a set on the Russ Parr Morning show as well. So, we just linked up and he became my official DJ, and he's also with the League Crew with Mick Boogie which is a large DJ collective. Mick Boogie has a lot of DJ's under him and he's real big in Cleveland. Right now we're also working on a mixtape before I drop my album 1000 Watts.

AllHipHop.com: Sounds good. Do you have a set date for dropping the album or is it still up in the air?

Slick Watts: It's still tentative. I want to see how the song “Danger” does. I think that might be the first single off the album, so we're still waiting on that. Also, I need to talk with DJ Fresh as far as what we're gonna do with the mixtape and everything.

I met him in Cleveland at the New Music Seminar and then he seen me at the Underground Music Awards, we were talking up there he congratulated me and everything. He only plays it if it’s hot, it’s basically a good way for me to get my music judged by him. Steve won't put it up there if it isn't; I appreciate him keeping it real like that.
