"Check Out Skyler Reed's Artwork"

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyler Reed.

Skyler, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Music has been my passion, and singing has been my purpose, since as long as I can remember. I started singing at family functions as a young girl, and begin songwriting shortly after my mother passed away. I was 9 years old when my life suddenly changed, and I had to move away from the city I was born, Wilmington Delaware, to a place I now call home, Fredericksburg Virginia. My aunt gave me a journal, and from there I went on to win poetry slams and compete in local talent competitions. I started singing in the church as well as the school choir during my middle school years. I followed my love for music to college, where I studied vocal performance, and earned a Bachelor’s of Music Degree from Virginia State University. Not even a month after graduation I was on a plane to Los Angeles. There, I dabbled in singing in operas, and eventually became an R&B/Soul artist. After 3 years of pursuing music there, I decided to move to Atlanta. I’ve been here for a year and a half, and am really loving it! I’ve established my music lessons business, Skyler’s Music Studio, LLC, as well as making a name for myself as an artist, entertainer, and songwriter.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am an R&B/Soul artist and songwriter. I create impactful music, and an experience in my live shows. I write from personal experiences, or things I’ve seen or heard that move me. Songwriting is therapy, and singing is an escape. I hope to inspire people to discover their purpose in this world, and be brave enough to follow through with their wildest dreams.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
The biggest challenge I think artists are facing today is financial support. The music industry today is flooded with so many artists, and labels are mainly checking for indie artists who are already established. To become successful as an n indie artist, the music has to be undeniable, obviously, but it does help greatly when they have money to access the resources they need. Getting a lot of paid shows is unlikely at an early stage. Consumers don’t really buy music either. On the bright side, due to this age of social media, artists can easily connect with fans, and build their own audience. I think Atlanta is doing a great job at offering a variety of music events where artists are given the opportunity to perform. I believe that offering more paid performance opportunities, which have the artists’ best interest in mind, would be very beneficial.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My website is the best place to see my work: www.skylerreed.com. People can watch my music videos and live performances on my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/iamskylerreed. "ARTIST HIGHLIGHT + NEW SINGLE RELEASE + STREAM :: Skyler Reed"

Skyler Reed is an R&B artist based in Atlanta, GA. Skyler graced the BeAtlanta stage in October of 2017 for the first of many BeAtlanta Arts and Music Festival events to come.

Bio:

“A lady of sophistication and musicianship, Skyler Reed, was born a singer. She is a classically trained vocalist based in Atlanta since her relocation from Los Angeles. Her heart desires to perform, and the stage has become her home. Since her time in Atlanta, she has established her music lessons business, “Skyler’s Music Studio”, and has performed frequently around the city. She has been diligently building her repertoire and preparing her next body of work. She hopes to inspire and uplift through the words and melodies of her songs, as well as educated music lovers.

Skyler grew up surrounded by music. During early childhood, her mother, who had the gift of singing, made music an integral part of her life. She introduced her to the greats; such as, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, and Lauren Hill. Skyler loved the music of Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, and Brandy. Although, Skyler’s mother is no longer here, she definitely was her inspiration to pursue music.

Songwriting has always been a form of therapy and self expression, since Skyler was twelve. She was a big dreamer and a curious girl with an immense aspiration of sharing art. At a young age she had desires of working with the best in the industry, and someday establishing her own music company. Since then her dreams have only grown bigger and better, and she has molded herself into the artist she is today.

Skyler has been committed to performing, and she gravitated to music as she evolved into a young woman. She continuously made her presence known by participating in school talent shows, joining church choirs and praise teams, and even performing at family functions. She went on to receive a Bachelors of Music from Virginia State University. She took heart in the value of being classically trained, while still staying true to her music by performing continuously at school events and functions. Her intentions are to encourage her listeners to follow their dreams! (http://www.skylerreed.com/).”

Although Skyler is pretty new to Atlanta, this talented lady has performed everywhere. Here are a few recent performances by Skyler Reed - BeAtlanta

"SKYLER REED WANTS TO KNOW ARE WE THERE YET"

Skyler Reed’s “Are We There Yet” is a brief respite from the stress of the world. Reed’s jazz and soul influences converge on a musical island away from daily routine. The single is on the Atlanta-based vocalist’s debut EP also titled Are We There Yet. The EP will be released by year’s end but until then Reed’s introduction is another song to add to the pandemic playlist. - Kick Mag

Check out our conversation with Skyler below.

Hi Skyler, thank you so much for sitting down with us again. For folks who might have missed our initial interview, can you start by briefly introducing yourself?
I am a recording artist based in Atlanta, GA, and I own my own business. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, and I started songwriting at the age of twelve. I went to college to study vocal performance, and after graduating I relocated to Los Angeles to pursue my dreams. There, I became an artist and put my songwriting to use. I created my first two studio projects and had wonderful performing experiences. After nearly four years, I moved to Atlanta, which I think was a great decision. Just a few months after being in the city I established my business, Skyler’s Music Studio, LLC. It’s been absolutely a joy to spread the love for music with children and adults. Currently, I am in the process of rolling out my next EP ” Are We There Yet.” So far, I have released two singles with music videos, which include the title track and “Don’t Disappear.”

What is the concept of your upcoming EP?
The concept of my upcoming EP “Are We There Yet,” continues a consistent theme with my projects, which is being on a journey. The first song created for this project, “Superpower,” stemmed from searching for and finding what makes you special. It set the tone for being on a journey, and for this particular song, it’s all about being on a slow uphill journey to fulfill your dreams. The lyrics breathe desperation and frustration, which most definitely occurs when people are trying so hard to get to a certain place in their life. The next song written for the project was “Are We There Yet,” and the conversation for that was a beautiful and reminiscent one. My songwriting partner, Jessica, and I discussed how easy things were when we were younger. We discussed how in actuality, everybody is always trying to get somewhere. You may reach a goal, but then a new goal will be conceived. Each song on the album expresses some sort of journey and has a common theme of longing, waiting, or driving.

How has it been creating during a pandemic?
Creating during the pandemic has been eye-opening, to say the least. I’ve learned a lot because I had to do a lot on my own. Normally, I would rent out a studio room and lock in to record my songs throughout several sessions. I couldn’t do that this time. Initially, studios shut down, but after they opened back up, I still didn’t feel safe going. I invested in a microphone, and I learned to record my vocals better because I only had experience recording demos in the past. I held sessions with musicians at my studio, where I teach lessons. I also recorded 3 songs from the EP in my studio, and one at home. I had help with a few of the recordings from my partner, Jessica Lloyce, who helped vocal produce me during the sessions. For one of the sessions, we worked via Zoom. It was different, but we got it done!

What are you currently listening to?
I love Tidal, because they curate all these dope playlists! I’ve recently discovered this new song called “Forever My Love” by Mya that I love. I’m also listening to Lucky Daye’s latest album, “Table for Two,” and Jazmine Sullivan’s “Heaux Tales.” I like to study great artists from the past, so I am currently studying Roberta Flack. I have been listening to her discography.

How has the pandemic affected your Skyler’s Music Studio business.
At first, I did lose a few students, which was to be expected. Surprisingly though, business is going well. I think it is due to people not being able to go out as much as before and need an outlet for fun. The pandemic forced me to be more creative. Before the pandemic hit, I was creating content for an online course, which I ended up launching in the summer. Most recently, I launched a monthly subscription plan called The Vocalist Plan. I’m offering singers daily vocal warm-up videos to help them stay disciplined, as well as access to my monthly online vocal workshop, an online mini-lesson, and more.

What have you learned about yourself as a creative lately?
I’ve learned what my sound is. Being an artist is a journey, and I know for me, I started off writing in a variety of styles. I couldn’t pinpoint what was fitting for me and my voice, because I love and appreciate all kinds of music. I think my upcoming project showcases my true voice and artistry. I’ve also learned that I can do more than I let on. I’ve recently gotten more into producing. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and I’m finally doing more of it.

What do you have planned for the future?
Performing! I plan to perform more than ever once this pandemic is over. It’s what I miss most. I’m also planning on releasing my “Are We There Yet” very soon, which I’m excited about. The pandemic has slowed down the process, but it’s nearly finished! - Voyage ATL
