"Critic's Pick"

FUNK BALL FEAT. THE DYNAMITES, JOHNY JACKSON, D-FUNK AND SHAWNA P. If funk is hard to define, at least it’s easy to groove to. Funk Ball hopes to make it easier to get your groove back when some local soul music icons get together to bring you funk uncut. Soul super group The Dynamites headline the party, slinging throwback funk heavy on syncopated horns and greasy guitar licks. The band’s lead singer, Charles “Wigg” Walker, gives the band a veneer of ’60s juke-joint authenticity. Johny Jackson, who kept bodies movin’ to many styles of funk in Nashville clubs for a decade, pops in from retirement to spin discs. Soul diva Shawna P. will get a guest shot for a few songs, and with her sass and rolling thunder voice, she stands to show up the headliners. WRVU’s D-Funk will be dropping the needle on some funk records; DJ Jeezus will also spin. City Hall —MARK MAYS

"Neon & Waltzes-Music Row Sessions"

Link- http://www.blip.tv/file/2566193/

In the first of three special Neon and Waltzes episodes, we follow a group of musicians and songwriters who collaborate around the songwriters showcase at Music Row Bar and Grill in Nashville. These are some of the best new artists working in different genres in Music City. In this episode, we feature just performances, filming what we hope captures a night at this intimate venue. This week's performance includes: Damien Horne, a hybrid urban and folk songwriter with a single 'Novacaine' on radio this week; Shawna P, a fiery songstress from Alabama with pure mother-earth energy who mixes soul and 70's southern rock. - Kristopher David Irizarry

Bio

Voted Best Female Vocalist in the 2008 Muscle Shoals Music Awards just 6 months after moving back home from Nashville, Tn, Shawna P was humbled and ready to dig down in to her Alabama roots again. Having lived in Nashville, Tn for 11 years, Shawna P accomplished some serious goals while there. She secured a lucrative publishing deal for her songwriting skills, became a sought after demo singer, and shared the stage, and sometimes the same mic (heh) with several big name artists- Kid Rock, Robert Randolph, Scott Weiland and Duff McKeegan of The Stone Temple Pilots, Michael McDonald, Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, James Otto, Charlie Daniels & .38 Special to name a few. Heralded by George Clinton as “The Long Lost Queen of Funk”, Shawna P is blazing a funky trail with her unique and powerful sound. Recently she and her tribe have been making waves in the music world and appear to be bringing a bonafide FUNK ROCK revolution. She is the real deal.
To witness Shawna P’s EarthFunk is an experience that can be intensely spiritual and fun all at the same time. Whether singing to 50 people or 5,000 people, her stage presence is consistently filled with raw emotion and heart wrenching soul as her powerful voice commands the attention of any audience, of any age, race or background. She is gifted with the ability to reach anyone as her talent is undeniable.
Shawna’s current work is deep and thought provoking, yet catchy and rhythmic enough for the masses. She describes her original material as EarthFunk Muzik. The EarthFunk sound incorporates digital tracks with live instrumentation to create an ethereal blend of all of her influences, yet having one main element- an undeniable FUNKY vibe. It is, without question, a sound of it’s own, refreshingly unique, leaving no one to compare her to-which is a good thing.

Shawna P cites her main influences as Mavis Staples, The Allman Brothers, Stevie Wonder, the Grateful Dead and Prince. Her vocals can be heard on projects ranging from rock-n-roll to hip-hop, to world music grooves to country.
Currently, Shawna P is working on incorporating the Earth elements of slide guitar and other roots oriented instruments into her sound in order to get back to her southern musical roots. Shawna P digs deep into the heart of southern soul like no one else. According to music legend Rick Hall of Fame Studios, “Shawna P might be the best female soul singer I have ever heard in my career”.
