A few weeks ago, I received S Five's "The Real E.P." CD in the mail. Wow! Great music! Their song "Move the Crowd" got me movin, all 250 LBS! Anybody that can get me up on my feet and shake it, has got something real special goin on. You might want to go see these gents perform locally while you still can. Hailing from St. Louis, the musical collective known as S Five blends hip hop, jazz, and soul to produce a sound that is tasteful and diverse. Delivering a passionate and polished live show to a genre stereotyped by soul-less performances and indistinguishable music, S Five is turning heads. The close minded and open minded; the rap fans and the hip hop haters; all who experience S Five - whether it be live or a cd - walk away having heard something memorable. Having packed many regional shows, S Five is one of the very few groups that can rock a forty-five minute show, or take a three hour lounge gig and be able to call themselves a hip hop band at the end.
At the heart of S Five is Rodney Nathaniel Gray Jr. (aka Rod Wisdom), Andrew Gibson, and Ben Kniffen. Front man and lead vocalist Rod Wisdom has everything it takes to truly move a crowd of diverse tastes. Andrew and Ben are the regular musical core and production duo of the group, on drums and bass respectively. This three-part core is surrounded by a collective of equally talented musicians in Andrew Miramonti, Ian Lubar, David Rogers, Anthony Butler, and Jason Martin. The band has recently completed their six song demo, entitled "The Real E.P." Though they are constantly working hard in the studio writing and recording new material, they keep busy with a schedule of live shows which is the best way to experience what this band is made of. Their live performances are a danceable, grooving mash-up of hip hop and jazz, topped off with funk and soul, and delivered by highly skilled musicians truly in their element. One listen will cement S Five’s sound in the ears of any musical enthusiast. They prove to be a group on the rise.
