Rock and Roll! New York City based Serial Obsession have a serious groove about them. Despite the bio describing lead singer Shawn Sugrue as sounding like Scott Weiland I would class him more as the bastard son of Ian Astbury and Glenn Danzig. Opening track 'Here We Come' is like The Cult on speed and a real barn stormer. 'Let's Go' gives a passing nod to Aerosmith. Guitarist Mike Suozzi carves out some great riffs which are supported by a great rhythm section.
Serial Obsession don't venture into anything new but what they do, they do very well, and are a great rock band.

Serial Obsession, a four piece band from New York City, make no bones about avoiding modern rock cliches and trends. From the opening chords of 'Here We Come' on their self-titled debut EP, Serial Obsession is about delivering hard hitting roots rock and roll in a compact and efficient package.
There are no lost or misplaced moments on this disc. Equally comfortable with ethereal moodiness of the ballad 'Surrender' or the cracking guitar rock of 'Say Goodbye' or the aforementioned 'Here We Come,' Serial Obsession delivers the goods with style and precision. Mike Suozzi sizzles on his leads; Shawn Sugrue shows range and passion; bassist Rosin and drummer Motts are both steady and strong. Serial Obsession is a wickedly tight combination of musicianship. The city and surrounds of New York City should be happy to have this band in their backyard. This is solid stuff. - Craig Hartranft - Dangerdog.com

Shotgun Opera was released in late April. It's the band's first official full length album coming nearly 2 years after their debut EP Sexy But Useless. (Great title btw!) The extra time was put into crafting the songs on the album and working on getting a polished final product. They succeeded. Shotgun is an impressive sounding album from the opening bass thump on "All The Way" to the final cymbal crash of "So Cold". If you're like me and the whole 'melodic' thing might tend to make you shy away at first, rest assured this is NOT a wimpy album. Shotgun Opera is a guitar driven hard rock album through and through. There is as much a classic rock feel to the overall product as there is the modern slant. Basically it's the stylings of vocalist Shawn Sugrue that gives the material that 'radio friendly' sheen. Plus, the material is simply catchy as hell. Shotgun Opera is one of those albums you'll find yourself listening to the entire thing once you push the play button. Stand out tracks include the aforementioned "All The Way" and "So Cold" as well as "Edge Of The Blade", "Half Cocked", and "Inside Out". The only track I usually avoid is the little too sweet sounding "I Can't Believe". - Swede ~ FatCatRadio.com

Having released an EP in 2008 titled "Sexy But Useless” and having received good feedback, we took notice and decided to check out this quartet of Hard Rockers from New York City. The guys of Serial Obsession are one of those few bands out there that possesses that unique ability to sound modern but still display some old school traits in their crunchy guitar licks and rhythms. Their full length album "Shotgun Opera" plays somewhat to that description as it displays some skillful guitar playing with a mixture of straight up old school hard rock influences ranging wide and far.
The guys certainly can raise the anti with some addictive hooks on such hot tracks like "Costa Rica" where the undertone voice of lead vocalist Shawn Sugrue match the spiked up guitar antics of the talented Suozzi and Sugrue guitar duo. The driving colorful riffs in "Edge Of The Blade" mend a touch of alternative with plenty of hard rock attitude and screams and the vocals sometimes reminding listeners of a younger Tom Petty. "Follow You Down" comes across as a nice southern bluesy track and the vocals and sound here are reminiscent of some older Jerry Cantrell material. Let the attitude of "Half Cocked' bring back the arena rockers of old as it will have you bobbing your head back and forth.
You will hardly find a dull moment in this tight production, even for an independent release the sound and the musicianship is top notch. Is refreshing for the band to continue climbing the ladder and carry on from their successful EP and now with a solid hard rocking album stapled on the ground, let's hope the group gets the recognition they deserve. As for you the readers, recommended to any Hard Rock fans new or old, you are bound to find something here that will satisfy your rocker hungry frenzy. Check them out and support the band!!! - MyGlobalMind.info

New York City based rockers Serial Obsession return with their first full-length disc, Shotgun Opera and, like their 2008 EP Sexy But Useless, it's a fine piece of American rock and roll. Drawing equally from rock history and current trends, Shotgun Opera merges classic hard rock with both modern nuances and melodic accessibility. Avoiding the harshness of most modern rock, Serial Obsession brings the rawness and reorientation to rock's roots which both grunge and post-grunge have attempted. Yet, they are not burdened by the fog morose self-flagation that comes with current trends. No, this is a hard rocking album with an upbeat genuineness that punches with good riffs, fiery leads, and catchy melodic hooks.
You can hear this fine merger of past and present in songs such as All the Way, Edge of the Blade, and Half Cocked. Half Cocked along with Dear Abby have a near arena quality, a big sound propelling crafty hooks. Then there's the pure guitar rock of Inside Out, but the guitar licks kill throughout thanks to Mike Souzzi. Vocalist Shawn Sugre is simply brilliant this time around, sounding bit like Scott Weiland mixed with Jerry Cantrell made smooth by Bono.
The production is top-notch, crisp, and clear, and better than expected for a self-produced albums, not doubt a tribute to Serial Obsession's talent and professionalism. On an otherwise excellent album, only Follow You Down and No Surprise seemed dodgy but, not to worry, still sound great and fit well with whole work. Serial Obsession's Shotgun Opera is prime American melodic hard rock and, in my humble opinion, the album they were destined to make. Their time has come. Strongly recommended! - Dangerdog.com
