Montagnes de Roumanie et de Transylvanie, Moldavie, Turquie, Ukraine, voilà le voyage tout en musique que nous proposaient Sergiu Popa et ses invités dans La nuit des gitans au Café-spectacles du Palais Montcalm hier le 19 mars. La nuit des gitans, c’est le nom d’un spectacle, c’est la réunion de musiciens qui forment plus ou moins un groupe, ce sont des individus à la fois d’ici et d’ailleurs, ce sont des liens qui se créent et se défont au fil du temps. Bref, des musiciens qui caractérisent bien la culture Tzigane, empreinte de liberté et surtout très festive.
La soirée d’hier au Café-spectacles était caractéristique de toute bonne prestation Tzigane. Des musiciens qui semblent, au premier regard, un peu trop sérieux et timides. Le spectacle débute lentement, ce qui peut laisser présager que la soirée sera longue. Puis soudain, apparaissent les premiers sourires, on s’adresse un peu à la foule, puis un autre musicien fait son apparition, puis le rythme augmente. Le plaisir croit avec l’usage et à partir de la mi-spectacle, les rythmes deviennent de plus en plus endiablés et lorsque la foule démontre son approbation, alors les musiciens gitans deviennent tout sourire et que la fête continue! Ils sont très généreux. Les pièces sont longues mais il s’agit ici d’une grande qualité pour cette musique. On a souvent l’impression qu’elles racontent l’histoire de toute une vie, additionnée d’un genre d’envoûtement ou l’on souhaiterait que la pièce musicale ne s’arrête jamais.
Au centre de ce spectacle, l’accordéoniste Sergiu Popa, né à Chisinau en Moldavie, mais qui habite maintenant le Québec. En temps normal, il forme un ensemble avec son épouse Jessica Gal (violoniste originaire de la Hongrie) qui était d’ailleurs présente sur la scène. Popa, qui maîtrise à merveille son instrument est d’une grande générosité avec ses artistes invités leur laissant beaucoup de place. On a pu voir Didem Basar, une virtuose du kanoun, genre de cithare du Moyen-Orient peu connu en Amérique du Nord. La musique de Basar est l’apport turc du spectacle, avec une sonorité très différente de la musique Tzigane mais des plus harmonieuse lorsque croisée avec les sons de l’accordéon de Popa. La deuxième partie fait beaucoup de places à Cornel (Gutui) Ionescu, un vocaliste et guitariste qui maîtrise le style Tzigane de la Roumanie. La pièce finale, magnifique, demandait la participation de l’ensemble des musiciens et des artistes invités. - Info-culture
Sergiu Popa comes from Chisinau, in Moldova, but now lives in Montreal, Canada, and from here he provides us with his first album "Accordeon Obsession".
The gypsy origins are immediately evident in his music but he manages, with a touch of talent to contaminate ( in the best sense of the word) this music with latin, jazz, and fusion, thereby giving us a final product that is diverse and can be listened to without prejudging ones reaction.
I will immediately highlight one track that does not work for me and that is the last one where Popa leaves his usual style behind and with an electronic deviation produces an arrangement of Brahms 3rd symphony which is a little too kitsch. Even if this track is not that good, the rest of the Cd is sufficiently intriguing: from the tracks with the bassist Georgi Stankov who seems sometimes to have come from Weather Report , to the particularly balkan tango in "Armenian Tango" to the fascinating duo with the flautist Romeo Vaduva.
Sergiu Popa intelligently finds a path through the traditional music of eastern europe and as well as re-interpretations he proposes his own compostions also like "Dor De Casa" (Missing Home") that portrays in musical terms that feeling of being distant from ones homeland and ones family.
So if you decide to buy "Accordeon Obsession" you should know that you will be not only listening to balkan music but also given the subtitle "Gypsy Fusion" - you will listen to good music. Here is a musician that deserves wider recognition. - Renato Belardinelli

"Récemment, j'ai découvert l'accordéon. Il m'est apparu comme l'instrument le plus polyvalent qui soit. On en écoute souvent mais toutefois sans s'en rendre compte. Il peut prendre l'avant-scène ou simplement accompagner une harmonie. Au Salon Vert, sur le boulevard Saint-Laurent, j'ai découvert Sergiu Popa et son instrument de prédilection, l'accordéon. J'ai été charmé par cet artiste qui a d'abord un style de l'Europe de l'est, mais qui peut facilement jouer sur tous les airs du monde. Il s'est adapté à Montréal, a 'jazzé' certaines grands classiques pour le plaisir de tous. Sergiu Popa, grand finaliste du Prix Festival Montréalais des Musiques du Monde (MMM), lançait son tout premier album, Obsession Accordéon, le 15 juin dernier.
D'abord, l'auditoire présent à ce lancement était très hétéroclite. Tous furent séduits par les doités de Sergiu et de son Ensemble. Un léger goûter ainsi qu'un verre de champagne furent servis afin de fêter la venue du premier album de Sergiu. Sergiu Popa peut à la fois jouer de son accordéon, mais aussi diriger tous ses musiciens. Que ce soit, la violoniste Jessica Gal, le batteur Anes Beglerbegovic ou le bassiste Georgi Stankov, tous le regardent à certains moments du spectacle et attendent son approbation. Sergiu Popa est un grand."

Sergiu Popa arrived in Canada in 2002 at the age of 22 with 60$, an antique accordion only a master could play and still sound great, and a leaky bottle of cognac. He came from the poorest and tiniest country in Eastern Europe: Moldova, and he came here with a dream to make it in music. He is the youngest of a Gypsy dynasty of musicians, and has studied the accordion (both formally and informally) since the age of 3. In 2003, Sergiu married Canadian-Hungarian violinist Jessica Gal. Classically trained, she had been specializing in Celtic music for several years but was in search of her own musical roots. Sergiu taught her the intricacies of East European music, and gradually they begin performing together full time. Still the core members of the band, Sergiu and Jessica have invited musicians Patrick Graham, a master percussionist with a wide variety of world music experience, and Samito Matsinhe on piano / keyboard and guitar to join them. Guests include talented female vocalist Geta Daraban, and Cornel Ionescu, a male vocalist and guitarist extraordinaire who sings in a in 'Gypsy Kings' style voice and is a master of Romanian Gypsy repertoire.
The Sergiu Popa Ensemble's sound could be described as 'Gypsy fusion' - mostly traditional music from Eastern Europe, infused with Sergiu's wild improvisations, contemporary arrangements and influences from jazz. latin, oriental and other traditions.
The band was discovered in 2006 by Musique Multi-Montreal (MMM), a reputable world music agency. At the 2007 edition of the MMM Music and People Festival, Sergiu was selected to create one of the evening shows of the festival (BIJANDO), and was subsequently awarded the Radio-Canada Prix Etoile Galaxie in recognition of the excellence of his performance. In February of 2008, Sergiu and his ensemble perfomed an official showcase at the RIDEAU music conference in Quebec City, and soon after were selected as the first recipients of the 'Circuit 514' award, an 18-month partnership with CBC Radio, La Place des Arts, Le Conseil des Arts de Montreal, Montreal Arts Interculturelles (MAI) and Vision Diversite. The project was launched in August, 2008.
In June, 2006, Sergiu released his first independently-produced CD, entitled 'Obsession Accordeon', which has been praised by critics including Yves Bernard (Le Devoir) and Renato Belardinelli (Accordions Worldwide), and plans to release a second in 2012. Sergiu also collaborates with a wide variety of international and Montreal-based musicians, such as Theodosii Spassov, master of the bulgarian kaval; Anatol Stefanet, founder of moldavian folk phenomenon Trigon; Vadim Kolpakov, Russian Gypsy 7-string guitarist; Jeri Brown, jazz singer; Ismail Fencioglu, Turkish singer and master of the oud and SoCalled, Yiddish hip-hop sensation. All have expressed their admiration and respect for his amazing adaptability, openness, his gift for innovative accompaniment and instinct for tasteful fusion of musical styles. Another quality they never fail to notice, along with his growing number of fans, is his natural warmth, humour and charm. Sergiu Popa is a future superstar of the world music scene.
Sergiu Popa est arrive au Canada en 2002, age de 22 ans, avec 60$, un vieil accordeon qui ne pourrait sonner formidable qu'entre les mains d'un maitre, ainsi qu'une bouteille de cognac moldave qui coulait. Il venait du pays le plus petit et le plus pauvre en Europe de l'est, la Moldavie, avec un reve de pouvoir demarrer une carriere internationale en musique. Il represente la plus jeune generation d'une dynastie musicale Rom (tzigane), et il a etudie l'accordeon de maniere intensive depuis l'age de 3 ans. En 2003, il s'est marie avec la violoniste canadienne-hongroise Jessica Gal. Ayant suivi une formation classique au conservatiore, elle s'etait specialisee en musique Celtique depuis plusieurs annees et desirait explorer sa propre musique traditionelle. Il l'aida a se familiariser avec les styles musicaux de l'Europe de l'est, et graduellement le couple s'embarque dans un partenariat musical a temps plein. Toujours au coeur de leur ensemble, ils ont depuis invite le pianiste/guitariste africain Samito Matsinhe, ainsi que le percussioniste Patrick Graham (qui a un vocabulaire etonnant en musiques du monde) de se joindre a eux. Parmi leurs invites speciaux, la chanteuse talentueuse Geta Daraban ainsi que M. Cornel (Gutui) Ionescu, un vocaliste et guitariste qui chante a la maniere des Gypsy Kings et maitrise le style Tzigane de la Roumanie.
Si on devait decrire la musique de l'Ensemble, on pourrait l'appeler 'fusion tzigane' - surtout des pieces traditionnelles de l'Europe de l'est, infusees des improvisations dechainees de Sergiu Popa, de ses arrangements contemporaines ainsi que des saveurs du jazz, musique latine, orientale et autre.
