"Vents Magazine Interview with Sean D"

Who’s Sean D?

Sean D: Thank you Rafael and Vents Magazine for selecting me as one of you artist spotlights. What an honor.

Man, I was never asked that question before…Hmmm
First and foremost I am a child of God, who has a heart for people, the community, the world. There is so much hurt out there from the homeless, to sex slavery, to abuse, abandonment and the list continues. That I just want to go out and inspire anyone that comes across my path and make them feel worthy. You know, a simple hello can change a person’s day.

I am an aspiring new artist who is a Senior in High School, 17 yrs old, living in Atlanta, GA. My birthday is December 23. I struggle with ADD and dyslexia. I attend gathering at Passion City Church. I love hanging out with my family and friends and meeting new people. I believe in the old ways of how a fella should pursue a girl, and continue pursuing her after you have her J. I love to have fun and act goofy, I just love to make someone smile and hopefully bust into a laugh. Sport activities I enjoy doing are: cliff diving, repelling, white water rafting, and when I am of age I will skydive…so I guess you can call me adventurous. When I am not sleeping, most of the time, I’m writing music! I write my own lyrics and tunes. I play Piano, Keyboard, Synth, Beatbox, and from the string family: Acoustic, Electric, Mandolin, Uke, and Cellos. People have asked me if I have had lessons; I have not. I hear it in my head and it just comes out…I have no clue about Theory side of music, which is a class I am going to be taking this year in school (that is if my counselor has approved it).

I am no where near perfect; I will be the first to admit that, there is a lot that I still need to learn about life, the music industry and just so much more. I do know my life has a purpose, has a meaning. I may not see the final picture but I know what puzzle pieces God has revealed. So right now, I am standing on the waters of Faith walking it, living it, and more importantly loving it!

How you get started in the music scene?

Sean D: (Ha) I started in the Children’s Church Chorus team at ELFBC when I was still in the single digits. I don’t think I was much of the singer at that time, but I was more of the entertainer, always getting in trouble with the adults. In middle school, I joined the Schools Chorus Team; thinking it was going to be an easy A. But I started learning about the different musical styles, which sparked my attention. (not many of my other classes did) My passion for music and singing grew stronger, so as I entered into High School, I continued on the Chorus Team getting involved with solo pieces and competitions.

Entering into the 9th grade year, my parents bought me my first guitar, and other instruments followed. Then entering into my 11th grade year, I started writing songs. I stepped into the recording studio, no clue what I was doing, I just knew what I wanted and that had to record a few songs. My first 5 song EP title “my everything” made its debut July 20, 2012 on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-everything-ep/id547298929

All songs on the EP was written and composed by me. All my lyrics have meaning behind them. Many that have heard my music say they relate to, which I think is pretty cool and doing what I do that is what it’s all about. Connecting!

What are your music influences?

Sean D: No individual or any band has influenced me. There are many great artists out there doing their thing. For me, it is a passion that grew stronger through each year; that I continue to learn upon daily cause it is always changing.

My Everything. How was it the recording and writing process? How you came out with the title?

Sean D: “my everything” I actually wrote while I was at school during my Spanish class my Junior year. So, I tuned out the teacher (sorry Sr. Sanchez) and the words just started flowing. I started hearing the melody in my head, and I knew exactly where I needed to go with it. And that was Acoustic. Acoustic to me is Raw, Pure. I wanted it to be raw and pure because that is how most people go into starting a relationship. That is also how I went into my relationship with Christ, giving Him “my everything”

What has been the funniest moment you have been or took part while touring?

Sean D: Ha, the funniest moment was while I was on stage, the show was being held outside, it was so hot outside, so the event people had fans blowing to help keep the artist cool. Well the fans were blowing my shirts (I had a loose tank with big arms and then a shirt over it) my outer shirt blew open, showing one of my boobs. I was being recorded with two different angles on each side of me. And as they played it back for my viewing, everyone started laughing…right there above my guitar sat my bare boob. I learned not to wear big opened sleeve shirts (ha)

Are there any more plans for the future we should be aware of?

Sean D: First pass my upcoming math class and graduate high school, which will be May 2013. After graduation, I am not sure what I will do after that. Society says, “You need to go to college.” But right now I don’t know. I am just getting to know who I am as a person.

I am in the process of making a professional video of “my everything” with Director, Kayla Shai. It is pretty exciting, totally different experience.

I am working on a new full length album. There will be changes to the style and recording. It’s pretty cool, and excited to see how people will react.

And a few shows have opened up here recently which you can follow on my website: www.SeanD-Music.com which I am still blown away by!

What’s your method at the time of writing a song?

Sean D: I usually hear the tune in my head, so I will sit by my piano or pick up my guitar and will play it until it is exactly what it is I am hearing. Lyrically, I write with depth and meaning. Each song is coming from life’s stories. And I think that is why so many people, all ages of life can relate to them.

Where can we found you in the Internetland?

Sean D: I would love to connect with people. They can reach me on:

Facebook: www.facebook.com/SeanDmusic

Twitter: www.twitter.com/SeanD_Music

iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-everything-ep/id547298929

On my website I have an area under “contact” where people can also send me their story. You never know what song might come out of it. J I also personally reply back to each of them.

Do you feel you are moving on the right direction?

Sean D: Yes, I do believe I am moving in the right direction. I know that this talent was given by God and that is something no one should ignore. You should use what you were given but what most people do is either run in fear or try to change their paths themselves and then are never happy.
I have good, solid mentors around me, keeping me grounded and pouring Truth into me, and I know would be honest with me when I need to hear it. So, the legacy I leave will just be built upon those that went before me. Life isn’t about competition, fame or fortune, it’s about making a difference in others lives daily.

It is always great to meet an artist who is getting his/her start in the music industry at an earlier age. Meet Sean D, only 17 years old, is already accomplishing so much with his music that this publication knew we had to feature him as one of our music spotlights for this week. Sean D has crafted an amazing sound that definitely sets him apart from the average Singer/Songwriter in the music business currently. One of the best parts to this artist’s music is how Sean D is able to capture his audience with his melodic tunes and beautiful lyrics. If you want to learn more about this gifted and talented young man, then read this special spotlight. Enjoy!

Isaac: Thank you for being a part of our weekly music interview spotlights. Let’s get started. The Indie Music Industry is an amazing beast. Many music critics have stated that Indie Music is on the rise with many new performers being discovered each day. Do you believe that indie music artists can rise to the level of stardom that their major music studio counterparts are able to now?

Sean D: Thank you Isaac and Junior Cave Magazine for selecting me as one of your artist spotlights. What an honor. I think any artist with the passion, dedication, and hard work can make it as far as they want to go in the industry. For me, there is still so much more that I need to learn. I know that my Life has a purpose, has a meaning. I may not see the final picture but I know what puzzle pieces God has revealed. So right now, I am standing on the waters of Faith walking it, living it, and more importantly loving it!

Isaac: What do you feel has been your biggest contribution you have made to Indie Music Industry thus far in your career?

Sean D: My biggest contribution is just bringing my music right now, and making myself available. I look forward to the future as I know the sun will never set and new opportunity will begin to happen. And as new opportunity begins to happen, then giving back will expand further.

Isaac: I am interesting to know if you could go back and change anything about your own musical career, what would it be and why?

Sean D: Mid June 2012, I started my musical launch. I don’t know if there has been any time to think about what if anything I would have changed. With my new full length album I am working on currently, there will be changes to the style and its recording. That just goes with working with a new producer and bouncing off ideas. He knows where I want to go with this new project, so it is going to be amazing! But I will keep it as a surprise. I can’t wait for y’all to hear.

Isaac: I am curious to know do you feel that the music industry as a whole is surrounded by an endless pool of undiscovered talents or overcrowded with mediocre performers.

Sean D: I do believe that there are many undiscovered talents not just in the music industry but in the entertainment industry as a whole. I want to encourage artist to keep pressing forward. If you are passionate about what you do, find places in your community to perform; don’t bury your talent once the first person criticizes you but work on always perfecting your art. We are in the business of continuous learning. Learning what the fans want to hear, see etc. Overcrowded with mediocre performers, No I don’t think so. They do what they love and that is what it is all about. It’s not about making millions. It’s about telling a story of what they have encountered.

Isaac: Who has influence you with their own music performances and why?

Sean D: Who had influenced me with their music performances? No individual or any band has influenced me. There are many great artists out there doing their thing. For me, it is a passion that grew stronger through each year; that I continue to learn upon daily cause it is always changing.

Isaac: Are you currently signed with any of the Indie Music Labels? If not, what are you looking for in any music label that you hope will complement your music?

Sean D: No, I am not signed with any of the Indie Music Labels. I am not signed with any label yet, although, that would be nice (ha). I would want to have a label that wouldn’t hold me back from the message I was trying to portray and being able to agreement together on any project.

Isaac: What do you feel has been one of the biggest challenges for you to bring your music to the masses?

Sean D: One of the biggest challenges for me to bring my music to the masses is probably the promotional side of the business. Since I am just launching my music, and being only 17 still in high school I don’t have much experience on the business side of it. I’m lucky to pass my math class with a D. I know what I am good at and the business side of it all is not one of them. So if you know of anyone good on that end, send them my way! (ha)

Isaac: One of the best attributes for any performer to possess is tenacity (persistence). What is your professional and/or personal drive that has made you continue to make great music over the years?

Sean D: I can’t take the credit. I struggle with ADD and dyslexia, so it would all become jumble/bouncy mess. My personal drive would end up becoming fatigue if I were to do it all on my own and then I would end up failing. So, I ride the same wave as God. He is my fuel, my energizer bunny, my driver. He allows issues to come into my life and has brought people in my paths which is what I have written about on my EP. If it wasn’t for those trials a story would have never been made. So going forward as I continue to walk on this musical journey we all have a chapter book that has been written for each of…share it with me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Isaac: How has living in your current city affected the way you look at the music industry?

Sean D: Living in Atlanta, I don’t really think it has affected anyway I look at music. I love the art of music, and all genres of music. If anything I think living in Atlanta has opened my eyes to the diverse cultures of music.

Isaac: We would love to see a music video from you! Do you currently have one that you can let our readers know about?
Sean D: I am in the process of making a professional video with Director, Kayla Shai, it is pretty exciting, it is a totally different experience. The only videos I currently have, you can find on YouTube which are performances from different venues since my music launch. You can find them by going to www.youtube.com/SeanDmusic or my website www.SeanD-Music.com which there will be a link to my YouTube account.

Isaac: At the end of the day, if you never reached musically to a certain level of fame and fortune, would you be happy that you made music on your own terms?

Sean D: I am not pursuing fame and fortune. What I am looking forward to on this journey is making music, meeting new people, seeing how I can help them and help my community then I am happy.

Isaac: For those who want to learn more about you and your music, where can fans find you online?

Sean D: I would love to connect with people. They can reach me on:
Facebook: www.facebook.com/SeanDmusic

Twitter: www.twitter.com/SeanD_Music

Website: www.SeanD-Music.com

YouTube: www.youtube.com/SeanDmusic

On my website I have an area under contacts where they can also send me their story. You never know what song might come out of it .

Isaac: Finish this sentence for us: “Your music is something that will…”

Sean D: “My music is something that will hopefully bring a story that will encourage the heart, restore the broken, build up the weak.
