Assanté “Santae Savage” Sonnier is a music artist born and raised in Opelousas, Louisiana. Santae moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in August of 2013 in pursuit of becoming a professional songwriter, videographer and entertainer. Since then he has maintained relevance in the underground music world after joining affiliates G.R.U.B. Life (a collective of musical artist, videographers, graphic designers and producers).
In September, Santae Savage released his 15+1 bonus track Mixtape, entitled “Dark Daze”, which also features: G.R.U.B. Life D, The Ha7M, iLL Quent, DMX and Élan Noelle. The beats are well thought out; the lyrics are clever and have relevance to what the song title is. The mixtape starts out fine and powerful, holding up all the way until the end. Each song brings a new sound. The way Santae Savage manipulates the beat, and changes his flows along with the track is magnificent. And his metaphors are well put together, just like this mixtape.
One point of warning Santae Savage is not for the weak-hearted or for lovers of commercial Hip-pop. His in your face from track one, with a fiery and provocative delivery that sometimes develops into a scream. This brother is on fire as he delivers street and gutter rhymes that propel him into hardcore territory. Rap originated from hard work and struggle, before reaching success. And that’s where Santae Savage is coming from here. Playful, commercial packaged garbage has been thrown out the window with “Dark Daze”, which brings business back to the building.
Santae Savage rhymes over a variety of fresh beats with a surefooted, raspy voice, never falling short of grabbing the listener’s attention. This mixtape certifies Santae’s state-of-being as an artist in respect to his flow, style, sound, punchlines, metaphors, alliteration and overall content. But what separates this mixtape from others, are the lyrics. They are nothing short of revolutionary with words that are both explicit and hard-hitting. Santae tackles a bucket load of subjects, and he faces them totally head-on.
After the opening skit, the mixtape jumps straight into overdrive with the track “WoRK”, and from there on out its hard driving right until the end, where it drops the pace a little so you can catch your breath. It sounds like Santae Savage is on his grind to establish himself as one of the best rappers in the game. Tracks that standout, for me, include “Don’t Help”, “The Root”, “Fuck’d Up”, “Die 2nite”, “hOT bOy ShT” and “Last Time”. But all the way through, this mixtape is nearly flawless, as Santae struts his confidence and his drive.
“Dark Daze” surpassed the expectations that I had of it. Every song is tight to me, and lyrically Santae Savage rips the whole mixtape to shreds. The production is undoubtedly solid and quite creative in places. Again, this is not an easy-listening mixtape. It requires your attention and your ability to absorb the hardcore attitude Santae throws at you, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll absolutely love it! - Jamsphere Magazine
