"I Am Country Music" by Sam Hatmaker
Writers: Nathan Chapman, Hatmaker & Emily Landis
This slightly quirky half spoken/half sung song is an interesting love song to country music. Instead of worshiping the genre, these three songwriters make fun of it, and embrace all the quirks of it. Hatmaker kills the vocals, her raspy voice working well for both the spoken and the belted parts of the song. In a year where defining the genre has become an obsession, this is a must-listen. - Queens of Country
Her name is Sam Hatmaker, however, I didn’t have to listen to this young lady long before I wanted to change her name to Sam Musicmaker. We’ve all heard it said that big things come in small packages, here is your proof. Sam is the best combination of country/rock, country/soul, country/pop, and just plain country that I have heard in a long time.
Her voice had a bit of a rasp, not unfamiliar to anyone who has ever listened to Bonnie Raitt. But, that was just during the first song she was doing when I arrived. After that, I discovered how much versatility there is in Sam Hatmaker. Her vocals, while always powerful, and always entertaining, did somehow change from song to song. Not something every artist can do. And, she played guitar, doing a great job accompanying herself to each song she sang for her audience. The way she presented herself on stage, and the fact that she was so comfortable working in front of a live audience told me she has done this before. She is a very talented singer/songwriter, and we expect to hear a lot of great things from her in the near future. - Country's Chatter
"The stage was owned, however, by a fifteen-year-old with stage-presence to burn and a powerful voice that should belong to a whisky-soaked thirty-year-old. Sam Hatmaker‘s original songs are very good and really do seem to come from a much older place than one might expect from someone so young.
She’s opened for Mindy Smith, performed on WDVX Blue Plate Special and headlined a two-hour concert at the Clayton Arts Center. You might characterize her style as Country Soul. It will be interesting to see what becomes of this very talented girl. " - Inside of Knoxville
