Toronto based singer songwriter Samantha Collard has been making her presence known this past year in pop/jazz music circles across this city and country. No stranger to Toronto’s music scene, Sam has stepped out of its shadows, demonstrating her determination to deliver her art out of the dank rooms of Toronto’s clubs where she performs regularly and into the larger public forum. The result, a recent surge in recognition for this talented artist.
Samantha has been honing her craft the past few years with industry heavy weights Ron Lopata (Jacksoul), Peter Prilesnik (Sarah Harmer)and Toni Rabalo (Joy Drop). This year, that work began to pay off as she won the title of runner up in the Mix 99.9 Radio Star song writing competition. She quickly followed that success with her debut performance at the first ever Sudbury Jazz Festival where she opened for headliner, Michael Kaeshammer.
Music arrived early in the life of Samantha Collard when at a very young age she saw the musical, Annie. Inspired by the magic and beauty of song on stage, Sam’s relentless journey into sound began. She discovered her parents record collection, fell in love with Judy Garland and Kate Bush and quickly informed her parents music was to be her life. She was 9 years old.
Today Sam’s sound can best be described as a mash up of the sassy sex appeal of the great jazz voices meets the dance focused carefree pop of the last decade. With influences ranging from the classic Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to modern soul shapers Jill Scott and Annie Lennox.
Not one for pretention, she chats candidly about her inspiration for her new song ‘Little Black Coat’. “Little Black Coat is a metaphor for the thick skin I've had to build from being myself in a dog eats dogs world. As an artist, I'm sensitive to my surroundings and music allows me the freedom to express in sound how I feel about the world”.
On stage, her songs come to life with a performance that captures audiences of all generations and genres. Feminine, classy and enigmatic, one feels as though they are experiencing both a throwback to the 50’s and the emergence of a genre that somehow fills the hole in today’s pop music culture. Beautiful and strange, this artist delivers a genuine and magical connect that keeps her audience’s smiling and engaged.
Samantha is currently in L.A. writing and recording her debut EP.
