He may just be making his first stain on our killer codified sheets, but rest assured that Robbie Maxx has plenty more ammo in store…this is merely “The Intro.”
The New Jersey representative let go of his latest visuals yesterday for a track on which he narrates a no-holds-barred version of his journey in hip hop. Robbie liberates the demons that casted a shadow of doubt over the limelight in which he strives to find his place, declaring that ultimately, he will find his way.

Hip-hop is an omnivorous beast. Its allure is powerful, and its communicative force is undeniable. Sometimes, people are drawn to it without even knowing why.
And some of those who are drawn to it turn out to be very good at doing it.
"When I was in high school, I was an athlete," says Robbie Maxx, a Westwood emcee who is just beginning to get attention for his idiosyncratic personal style and mesmerizing flow. "I played football and basketball. Sometimes I would freestyle in ciphers. But I never gave it much thought."
By the time he’d gotten to college, everything changed. He began getting attention for his rhymes — and attention was something he found intoxicating.
"By freshman year, I was known as that crazy kid rapping," says the emcee, who attended Montclair State. "Once I stopped playing ball, it was the one thing that I had left that kept me sane, and was able to give me a direction."
It’s taken him to parties, proms, open mics and local clubs — and, judging by the quality of his recordings and promotional videos, it has the capacity to carry his voice much further. His music is woozy, intoxicating, suggestive; it leans toward the syrupy style of Southern hip-hop, but maintains its own peculiar character. Maxx, who performs with the Maine emcee Spose at Mexicali Live on Thursday, doesn’t have an album out yet, but his crisply shot clips for the hedonistic "Summer Vaction," the drawling "Glory" and "Volcano," a collaboration with Keith "Lil Wonda" Duplessis, have won him a small but dedicated audience.
And when he takes the stage at Mexicali, right beside his usual deejay, he’ll have another dedicated Jersey artist behind him on drums: his dad.
"He’s a beast," says Maxx of his father. "He’s very talented. He’s been playing in bands all of my life. When I was a kid, I used to help him pack the car with his drums. I still do."
Robbie’s father led by example. He never pushed the emcee to make music. But his experience in bands gave him perspective on his son’s activities. While many dads wouldn’t necessarily be thrilled about their kids taking up the microphone, the drummer is nothing but proud.
"There’s passion behind everything he does," says the rapper. "He really does want to be deeply involved in the project. He makes every show he can.
"Music was always his everything. Now it’s become my everything."
Since dedicating himself to the microphone, Maxx has been going at it as hard as he can. He’s been working with Duplessis’ Airplay Entertainment, an offshoot of one of the Garden State’s most notable hip-hop empires. Jerry "Wonder" Duplessis, bassist and songwriter (and Lil Wonda’s uncle) is probably best known as one of Wyclef’s most recognizable sidemen. Like Robbie Maxx, Keith "Lil Wonda" Duplessis is a second-generation entertainer — which may help to explain why the two "Volcano" rappers complement each other so well.
Maxx met Elijah Duplessis, Lil Wonda’s brother, in his writing class at Montclair State University. The Duplessis brothers brought him into the studio, told him what they liked — and what needed development. He’s taken their advice, and he keeps refining his project.
"I write every other day at least," says Maxx. "I drop new music pretty much every week. And if I’m not writing, I’m out there getting my stuff to people.
"I live who I am and what I do. I sell personality first and foremost. I go down to the beach and start handing people mix tapes. I rap wherever I can, and let it all out in the music. And I always like to show the community love, and meet with fans face to face."
He faces the same challenge that other Jersey emcees do. In the shadow of the Big Apple, it can be hard for a young artist to distinguish himself. Although Garden State hip-hop is crowded with emcees mainstream (Joe Budden), underground (GDP, Ransom), and locally famous (Arsenal, O-Solo), we haven’t produced a new major star since the ’90s. And while other regions boast a definitive sound, our homegrown hip-hop is a patchwork quilt.
"I think Jersey hip-hop is very much all over the place," says Maxx, "and in a way, that’s cool. There’s definitely a lot of talent here.
"I know a lot of people try to be what they see instead of being themselves. But I still see Jersey hip-hop as something that’s bound to pop — and I know my time will come."

ROBBIE MAXX FEAT. REYGLPA – THAT SHIT CRAY
POSTED BY VMAN ON OCTOBER 3, 2013
Here’s some local hip-hop from Robbie Maxx featuring ReyGLPA “That Shit Cray.” I had seen this video on Twitter yesterday, and felt like showing love to these artists today. I fux with this beat heavy, reminds me of a Danny Brown record, and the fellas do their thing on it. I can see this record getting played at the clubs, it’s catchy and ignorant, and I mean that with all respect. Also word on the street, Robbie Maxx is ‘opening up for Dirt Nasty tomorrow night at Webster Hall, so here’s to your FNT debut, and best of luck on the show! - VMAN of freshnewtracks.com

WEST ORANGE, NJ - On the rise is an up and coming hip-hop artist by the name of Robbie Maxx. This Westwood, NJ native is taking charge of the local hip-hop stage in the New Jersey area. Robbie began rapping and writing during his freshman year at Montclair State University while playing football. He soon began garnering attention through his rapping, which began as a hobby and way to entertain, and his interest grew until he realized music was the life path he wanted to take.
Robbie made the decision to leave Montclair State University and instead take on the world of hip-hop full force. His most recent mix tape, released in December, 2012 by Maxx and Airplay Entertainment, is titled “A Different World.” The tape features songs that are now some of his most viewed music videos on YouTube, including “Volcano,” (featuring artist Lil Wonda) and another video for his song “Summer Vacation” which originally debuted on his first mix tape, "Industry Beat Volume 1: The Alter Ego.”
Robbie is extrememely passionate about music,. He said “I feel the world revolves around music...It's an outlet for me to let out some of the things I struggle with in my personal life. I am a firm believer that hip hop can come from all aspects of life... If you have something to say, what better way than music, allowing people just like you to relate and feel your pain, struggle, happiness, sadness, whatever emotion might be involved.”
For as passionate as he is about music he is also very grateful for the oppurtunities he has received and is confident and excited to move forward with his music. Robbie spoke about his experiences saying, “I have grown and developed in the Booga Basement studio (where The Fugees came out of) and that experience in itself has allowed me to understand things through the industry as well as my own trial and error. That makes for a sky is the limit situation! I am excited to see what the future holds.”
Robbie’s passion does not stop at music. He also wants to spread a movement that he and his cousin Tommy “White T” Purdy created they call “bxxb” or “belief x x belief.” Robbie said that "bxxb" is “the belief that anything is possible.” Soon snapbacks will be available for sail with the “bxxb” logo on them, worn by members of the music group "Timeflies," in their music video “I Need Your Love." Another "bxxb" supporter is the Green Bay Packer’s DT "BJ Raji."
Robbie Maxx has shows throughout the New Jersey and New York area. He will be performing at Allure Lounge in Newark on May 30th. For more information on Robbie’s music, story, “bxxb,” and upcoming shows check him out on his facebook page or on YouTube.

Over the weekend I ran into Robbie Maxx’s manager who just happened to play football for the University of Rhode Island which is five minutes from my parents home. The connection was instant and soon as I got back to Tennessee I checked out the video you see above. What I like about Robbie Maxx is his energy and charisma. His style is a little more commercial than I am used to posting on HHH but regardless it has all the components of what I’m looking for in an artist. The hook is catchy, the verses are solid and the visual is crisp. I’m looking forward to hear more from Robbie Maxx in the near future. - Decota401
