A New Phenomenon
THE RHYTHM+ band fuses popular West African rhythms with West Indian influences to create Afrolypso, a new sound that entertains while it educates the listener. According to leader Tony Ansou John, the primary mandate of the band is to preserve and pay homage to the calypso and calypso bands of the early to mid-twentieth century. The foundation for the music is traditional Guinean village rhythms. This is then augmented by parts of a traditional Trinidad steelband rhythm section with congas, iron and cowbell. Jazz horns create added sophistication to already complex rhythms.. And make great dance music at the same time!
