Los Angeles Worships... Redcar
Heather Reid is a rock goddess. We don't use those words lightly for a goddess of rock is a title only given to a chosen few. And for anyone who has caught a glimpse of Ms. Reid on stage during her 15-year reign knows full well she has been chosen.
Since her days in the underappreciated folk pop duo The Murmurs to its transformation to the short-lived power pop group Gush, we've been enamored with the sweet-voiced, irresistibly charming Heather Reid. Even her foray into the musical theatre world was a complete hit with us. Now with her band Redcar, who celebrated the release of their debut record Can't Be Stopped at the Troubadour last night, the love has turned into complete and utter worship. Her 70's rock inspired swagger circa Heart, Jefferson Airplane, and Pat Benetar very nearly had us throwing our panties on stage and begging for naughty body parts to be autographed. Yes, we wear panties. But only for the goddesses.
Redcar performs 4/21 at the Hotel Cafe and 5/17 at the Temple Bar. New album "Can't Be Stopped" out now on Phyllis Records.

American band with Teesside rootsJul 4 2007
by Michelle Ruane, Evening Gazette
A SINGER is making waves in America with her band named after a Teesside seaside town.
Heather Reid was born in New York, but named her band Redcar in memory of the childhood summers she spent at the seaside with her grandparents Phyllis and Bob Reid.
In a touching tribute to her gran, who lived on Redcar’s Kirkleatham Lane, Heather also named the band’s record label Phyllis Records.
Heather said: “I was born in Brooklyn. My mother Sheilah was born in Burley-in-Wharfdale, but spent most of her young life in Redcar.”
When Sheilah was 19 she left Teesside for a life in New York.
Heather said: “She brought me to Redcar to meet my grandparents when I was about two months old. I grew up in New York, but my parents had the luxury of leaving me with my grandparents almost every summer.”
She was a visitor for around 18 years, adding: “Redcar is the place of all my best childhood memories.”
As well as regularly visiting Locke Park, she fondly recalls Lemon-Top ice creams, Redcar rock, the sand dunes and pier, fish and chips with mushy peas, the town’s ghost train and swimming baths.
Bob died when Heather was 11, but she spent several more summers with Phyllis in Redcar. She added: “I absolutely adored my grandmother.”
When Heather was 21 her mum died, leading Phyllis to move to New York.
Heather, who was with a band called The Murmurs, said: “I was just starting my career as a musician. Grandma Phyllis came to many Murmur shows. One time I picked up a bottle of beer to sip between songs and heard a loud, stern Northern voice say ‘for God’s sake Heather, get a glass’.
“It was surprising, embarrassing and hilarious at the same time. My friends worshipped grandma Phyllis and in honour of her we named our record label Phyllis Records.”
Phyllis, who died 13 years ago, is also on the cover of an album by The Murmurs.
Heather still has family in Burley-in-Wharfdale and last visited Redcar two years ago, saying: “We made a detour for old time’s sake.”
“Family and friends I had in Redcar made living there the best experience I could have ever wished for,” she said.

Bio
REDCAR is:
HEATHER REID, formerly of The Murmurs and Gush, has a captivating and distinctive voice and a passion that is impossible to ignore. Onstage, Reid’s energy is infectious, as she feeds off the band’s bashful swagger and her very personal lyrics. A force of nature, Heather brings an intensity and joy to her performances that fuels the band--and everyone else who listens.
JON SKIBIC (lead guitar) takes his inspiration from musicians such as James “Honeyman” Scott and Billy Zoom. You may recognize Jon from Greg Dulli’s “The Twilight Singers.” “The Gigolo Aunts,” the Juliana Hatfield band, and Ivy. Jon anchors the band firmly in current indie rock with his complex riffs and hard-edged melodies.
RYAN MACMILLAN (drums) Also holds status as the drummer for Matchbox Twenty. He was previously a member of “The Push Stars” (Capitol Records) and has worked with artists such as The Dixie Chicks, Steve McDonald (Redd Kross) & Anna Waronker (That Dog) as well as Tracy Bonham to name a few. Ryan’s experience and talent shows in every track.
The REDCAR Story:
Heather and Jon met 4 years ago in Los Angeles when Heather’s first band, The Murmurs, formed Gush, a band that was run through the major label grinder within its first year. After Gush, Heather and Jon began to collaborate for the first time as co-writers, meeting a few times a week in Heather’s closet of a writing studio in the heart of Hollywood. Their claustrophobia and Heather’s calling to get back in front of live audiences lead the two to realize it was time to start a new band. Jon knew Ryan through the tight knit music scene in Boston, and Jon convinced Ryan to a spin. “He definitely needed an initial push” says Skibic “but, we grew on him.” After some concentrated studio time, the trio have been thrilling standing room only Los Angeles audiences on a regular basis with their live performances, including a sold out record release party at the historic Troubadour.
REDCAR completed their debut album in March 2007, produced by Grammy award winner Greg Collins (U2, Gwen Stefani). The album was released by Phyllis Records, an indie label based in Silver Lake, California. Redcar was selected as the “Critical Eye” band by Yahoo! Music.
The band takes its name from the small seaside town of Redcar in Northern England, the birthplace of Heather’s mother and home to the most delicious fish and chips in all of England.
