Loudwire: Who else out there is making an impact in metal?

Jim Florentine: There’s a band out of Baltimore that I really like. They’re called Rebel Inc. If you like Rage Against the Machine, they sound pretty much influenced by them. I love that stuff and I wish Rage would do something new, but in the meantime Rebel Inc. is holding strong. They’re definitely up-and-coming. If you like Rage, you’ll love them. Rebel Inc. takes to the stage as anxious fans cheer. Kevin kick-starts the show with the opening riff to the song, “909 Revolution.” Benny’s powerful bass drives the music to the next level as Brian joins in on drums. Lead singer Adam Armstrong launches his lyrical assault in a crescendo that ignites the crowd like the 4th of July. With this type of energy, nobody has to tell the crowd what to do next. Enthusiastic listeners begin waving their arms, pumping their fists, yelling approvingly, and some even begin dancing (or more appropriately, moshing). 
We’re at the After Party of the Veterans for Ron Paul March on the White House in D.C., and the lyrics to this intense song seem to take on a special meaning for the active duty troops and veterans who had just sang our own songs of revolution in cadence as we marched through the streets of Washington earlier that same day. The band is tight and sounds like a poetic storm of justice raging against the corruption of a broken political system. The song reaches a point where the music gets low and the softer lyrics exclaim that, “it’s all just become so clear.” Truer lyrics were never sang for so many of us in the crowd who had shared such a sense of patriotic purpose as we had exercised our Rights to free speech in front of President Obama’s own front yard only hours before. 
Adam jumps off the stage, heading into the pit of slam-dancers. He wraps his microphone chord around his arm and invites everyone to gather in close for the next part of the song.  The music explodes again as Adam spits the line, “they’ve left us with no choice but to start a revolution!” The walls of the building shake with approval as the crowd goes crazy upon hearing this powerful exclamation of what had been on the mind of so many of us throughout the day. 
We are swept up in a wave of righteous indignation and elation as Adam’s soaring screams bellow the battle cry we are all feeling, “let’s start a revolution!” It’s an original song by an original band that has success written all over it. It’s an in-your-face modern-day battle-hymn of the Republic. It is the theme song of a generation of young people who have nothing invested in a corrupt system of government which only promises them perpetual debt and perpetual war. It is part of the beginnings of a new American Revolution.  - Adam G. When a work of art pulls feelings and thoughts out of us that we couldn’t successfully express before, it is truly a self-revolutionary moment. It lends a hand in finding our own voices. Sometimes we encounter another person’s artistic expression and it seems to say exactly what we’ve been trying to find words for and suddenly, we know exactly how to express ourselves. Art in every form can be a driving force behind societal norms and shifts, it can be propaganda intended to deceive the masses into false beliefs, it can be a truth so brazen and inspiring that it spurs a revolution, it can be everywhere in between.

Rebel Inc. is often called a political band, I don’t really believe “political” is exactly the correct term, they’re anti-political. Rebel Inc. is based in Maryland, USA and initially started around 2000 but all four current members were not present until 2010. Rebel Inc is comprised of Adam on vocals, Kevin on guitar, Benny on bass and Brian on drums. Their sound spans the entire rock spectrum. From punk to alternative to metal and everywhere between, Rebel Inc can deliver flawlessly. Rebel Inc’s most notable features are probably powerful guitar, raw lyrics, pure energy and undeniable truth in performance.

They self-released their first EP in March 2009; every song on the album has been played on terrestrial radio in multiple states in the USA, as well as Canada and Australia and has received great reviews throughout North America and Europe. “Killin’ the Future” is featured on A Soundtrack for Refusal, a compilation album featuring Tom Morello, Rise Against, Anti-Flag, Ryan Harvey, and many more great artists to benefit the Civilian-Soldier Alliance. The second album is due for release in spring 2012.

Rebel Inc seems to constantly be on the road touring, getting audiences to fall in love with them. They have played over 100 different venues in 15 states, US military bases with the sponsorship of Iraq Veterans Against the War, played Seattle Hempfest in 2011 and have played with Seether, Fuel, Anti-Flag, Cold, Kottonmouth Kings, Otep, Hed PE, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Psychostick, Green Jelly, Nashville Pussy and dozens of local acts in many areas.

I have seen several reviewers call Rebel Inc “high energy” that really doesn’t describe their performance adequately. Rebel Inc’s album is fantastic, I own it myself and my teenagers blare it on a regular basis, but Rebel Inc live is explosive, many have stated that Rebel Inc must be seen live and that is absolutely accurate. I’ve yet to see or hear any recorded media that truly does their performance justice. Their stage presence is awesome, all the passion, anger, hate and love that goes into their music transfers out to the crowd. They are ALL over the place on stage; Adam is often spotted off the stage in with the crowd. I saw Rebel Inc. in Columbus, OH in October, 2011. The crowd was very small, the venue was brand new to the band, and it didn’t make a difference, they put on the same show they would (and have) for a crowd of 100,000. Their music was clean and together, there is no garage band quality about them, they’re very much professional grade musicians. They clearly love playing and performing and most definitely served to impress in Columbus, the crowd demanded another song at the end of the set. And of course, Rebel Inc delivered.

Through discussion with band members, I have come to know beyond a doubt that these guys are in it for the message. Above all else it seems to me that Rebel Inc hopes their fans will leave with a hunger for change, the desire to think freely and the balls to take control of their own lives and minds, hence my calling this “artistic terrorism”. We’ve been receiving a lot of suggestions lately and Rebel Inc. was one of those. It took about 30 sec. to make the decision this time. Sometimes it just clicks instantly. This band f**king rocks and it’s not raining in Baltimore anymore!

Rebel Inc. is a Baltimore based band but the roots are in Detroit Rock City. The music is a mixture of metal, rap and alternative rock. There’s no doubt that Rage Againts the Machine, White Zombie and bunch of other bands alike have had an strong influence on their sound and music. However raw power and energy can only come from the heart. You either have it or you don’t.

The songs on their self titled 6-track EP are invariably fast paced, energetic and intense, with roaring lead guitar riffs to the fore. “909 Revolution” is a enjoyable mixture of Slayer and Rage againts. “Broken Man” is one of my favorites. This “hip-hop metal” just makes you wanna jump up and down. “Everything You Hate” is a track with thoughtful lyrics and a lot of aggression within. Adams’s or correctly said Strong’s vocals are what give the band’s sound its edge.

It is said that one of the strengths of this band is their live shows. Well, as soon as I find my way to the East Coast I will surely check the band out and find out whether this rumor is true or not. In the meanwhile we all can enjoy their live performance videos on their site.

Honestly, it is challenging to find soft spots of this band. Musical differentiation is the only thing that comes to my mind. Walk your way and deepen your individuality. These guys are on their way to the Big League!

Rough lead and bass guitar riffs build to a menacing pace before literal explosions of sound while tribal sounding drums pound out warnings that war is eminent. Adding gasoline to the flames the raspy, strong vocals delivered by these musical Che Guevara’s with the fury and fervour of a televangelist, has a sobering message of rejection of the status quo, their fallen, false morality and the efforts made to control each and every one of our lives. “They’ve left us no choice but to start a revolution!”

Rebel Inc. is a four-piece Punk rock outfit from Baltimore, Maryland who haven't forgotten the Rock in Rock N Roll. Their debut EP, Rebel Inc., features the crunchy feel of a Linkin Park with the musical economy of Black Flag.

Rebel Inc. opens with March, a simplistic and repetitive diatribe against mindless nationalism and military expansionism. Rebel Inc. paraphrases the tendency of governments to use fear of the outsider to rally the people and push them into policies that are otherwise objectionable. The repetitiveness her is representative of a sheep mentality, and the song is actually a fairly intelligent bit of social commentary. Let It Go follows in the same vein, lamenting the loss individualism in a culture that's increasing homogenized. Let It Go is a serious rocker with potential for Modern Rock and Punk outlets. Everything That You Hate is a classic bit of Punk rebellion with a slightly darker, almost revolutionary tone. It's a call out, of sorts, to the establishment as seen by the songwriter, whether that's governments, social structures or individuals.

Rebel Inc. rages against the machine some more on Shake 'Em Up; a decent tune that gets caught up in a few too many repetitions. 909 Revolution is built around a wonderfully dark guitar riff. The song itself doesn't work as well as those that came before, losing some of the coherence that Rebel Inc. is capable of. Rebel Inc. closes out with Broken Man, a song about the sort of desperation that leads people to revolt at some times and to simply give up at others. Rebel Inc. captures the feel of protest music in Punk, sometimes with great precision and sometimes in clumsy terms. Rebel Inc. displays a band that knows how to rock, and songs such as March and Let It Go reveal a subtlety you might not expect from a Punk outfit, but other material here is of the more mundane variety. Rebel Inc. is certainly worth checking out, and is a decent start. If Rebel Inc. can be more consistent in combining their intellectual and head-banging pursuits they'll write their own ticket.

Il quartetto di Baltimore è abile a fondere melodie crossover e retaggi punk senza perdere mai di vista l'economia compositiva e 'Sold-Sold-Sold' richiama così i Black Flag di Henry Rollins esattamente come i Rage Against The Machine con i quali l'anno passato hanno condiviso un tour con lo sponsor della Iraq Veterans Against The War. For all of them metal fans it'll turn out to be simply impossible not to rock to the dynamic songs of Rebel Inc. Whoever is, on top of that, a fan of political and socially critical lyrics, is on the right spot with Rebel Inc.
They're far from being just a noisy dilettantish band. These four musicians from social focal point Detroit (Michigan) lay their focus clearly on the lyrics, which they're able to complete perfectly through their energetic music.
Pretty much from the first track on ("March") it becomes crystal clear, which sensible topics the band is, straightforward, making a subject of discussion and therefore raising problems. Above all "Broken Man" convinces through its strong lyrics and the expressive music. Especially guitarist Kevin shows, in his string play, distinctive similarities with Tom Morello (guitarist Rage Against The Machine).
Social evils and politically subject matters are linchpin at Rebel Inc. Nevertheless there's no such thing as moralizer attitudes but calling "a spade a spade" is customary for Rebel Inc. For this very reason the band belongs, for a certainty, to the important as well as rare species of musicians, who know how to match dynamic music, intelligent lyrics and statements and through this be convictive. And in the best case inspire people for more commitment.
No sign of artificial plastic sounds, no shallow world weariness love songs and no indefinable musically moaning or overacted drum attacks. Rebel Inc. provide solid rock-metal and can do without this veteranly, degenarated to no more than a mere slogan, "Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n' Roll".
The band moves close at the predominantly spirit of times and therefore in an uncomfortable terrain of undeniable truths for some. With an authentic passion Rebel Inc. also dare to criticise their home country (USA) as well.

These guys actually have a more accessible sound than RATM without giving up any of the power of the message. They are bringing a similar attitude in a different musical way. And we need this in our music today more than ever. In any case, these guys are excellent. - John Mullins-SESAC Director

Rebel Inc. offers listeners gritty and honest rock music in the style of Rage Against the Machine with a more conventional delivery. An aggressive blend of punk, rock, rap, and metal forces the listener to think, question, analyze the world around them. Determined to become more than another faceless entity in the world of rock music, Rebel Inc is loud, in your face, and clearly unhappy with the country’s present state. An clear influence of Detroit rock and a passion for what they do creates a soundtrack of revolution. Lyrics far from contrived, a monologue of distaste with the establishment, a sound and message that many can relate to. From the standpoint of a music review, the message is what’s important. Any music lover can probably dig a artful disdain for the establishment and a call to break a stasis of political indifference.

A definite cut above most bands in the contemporary hard rock genre, Rebel Inc has a great framework for what will likely be a breakthrough political rock outfit. A definite energy resonates throughout the entire album and the message is crystal clear. A good base sound gives listeners a great frame of reference, a sound that has many different layers, infinite capability and an in your face attitude that is sure to captivate. The Rebel Inc self-titled release is a perfect glimpse of what listeners can expect of this up and coming band in the future. A solid debut release in itself, my prediction is that they will continue to evolve and create a deeper sound with each subsequent release. The band’s roots are something that can be built upon, the solid structure of their songwriting and arrangements becoming more complex and dynamic as the years progress. Rebel Inc is a name that the rock stratosphere will come to know.

In my ongoing quest to make great unsigned bands be heard, today I bring you the political sounds of Rebel Inc. These guys are doing their thing on the East Coast and trying to get their message out. The music is outstanding, but there are important messages and lessons to be heard here as well. Below you will find a review of their EP, followed by my conversation with vocalist Adam (strong) Armstrong.

The following are my notes as I listen to this amazing EP.

“March”: Has an opening eerily similar to Rage’s “Wake Up.” The similarities to Rage Against the Machine don’t end there. The guitar solo seems to be channeling Tom Morello as well. The song gets going good and quick though. The vocal chants of, “one by one” keep the vibe going and raise the energy level. As the song winds down, there is a rock and also a punk feel happening here.

“Let it go”: Rap-style vocals followed by solid guitar grooves. The tempo is fast and enticing. The vocals are simple, but effective. There isn’t anything really special happening here, but it’s a nice groove with a powerful message.

“Everything that you hate”: Opening with a Slayer-esqe guitar sound and built on with a simple bass line (Kenny Lee), this song gets the machine going back in the right direction. The vocals are on point, as they basically describe, “everything you hate.” Lots of ideas of things you might hate, flowing together beautifully with guitar cover over top. This is good shit.

“Shake em Up”: Begins with a tantalizing guitar stop and go. Gets going with yet another solid groove. The lyrical pace is quick and catchy. It makes me listen more closely. I want to know what is being said. This song brings the best (if not only) guitar solo by Kdubbs on this record and it’s really freaking good. The vocals as the song run out are simple but effective.

“909 Revolution”: The sound of darkness rears it’s head as this song begins. The listener is helpless but to embrace the sound of pending doom. The main riff hits the darkness and creates mood and texture. This is the best vocal work on this record, as “Can’t you hear the fucking rebels coming?!” is chanted throughout. This has to be the best song on the album.

“Broken Man”: A nice bass line and some reverb from the guitar get this one going right. The introduction instrumentation is great, really draws the listener in. From there, we get a series of rap-runs on the vocals, leading (with help from the guitar) into a catchy, whirlwind of sound. This culminates in a guitar solo. From there, the vocal runs continue. I stand corrected, THIS is the best work on the album. As the song (and record) head toward conclusion, the tempo speeds up, the vocals intensify and the emotions of the band are heard loud and clear.

This record is ALMOST amazing. Considering it was not professionally recorded, it sounds great. This is a very solid start from an unsigned band. It certainly merits a good listen. From there, we would all be wise to keep one eye out for these guys, as they’re going to put it all together at some point soon. When they do, we better all be listening.

Rebel Inc.’s self-titled Rebel Inc. is high energy and not to be taken lightly. Their sound is much like that of Rage Against The Machine; a mix of heavy instrumentation paired with anti-political inspired lyrics. Rebel Inc. has an intense beat to their music that would make their audience breakout into a mosh pit instantaneously.

They would fair well with the commercial crowd at the Van’s Warped Tour, pulling the same crowd as Anti-Flag. However, because of their Rage Against The Machine essence, their style would play well with the crowds of metal heads at Ozzfest and the eclectic crowd at Coachella. Their music is versatile and has a mass appeal to anyone and everyone that has a stand to take on political issues musically.

Track 1: “March” sets off the anti-political tone of the album.
