BLOOMINGTON - A former New Ulm musician and private-practice psychotherapist was recently chosen as a Midwest Regional Finalist in the Mountain Stage New Song Contest.
Rebecca D. Aadland is the only Minnesota contestant in the contest considered one of North America's premier showcases of performing songwriters across all music genres.
One of 12 finalists will be selected to perform in the international contest finals, held this year on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 in Charleston, West Virginia's Cultural Center theater - the home of internationally broadcast Mountain Stage radio and television show.
All finalists will attend the Mountain Stage show on Oct. 11 in Charleston. One of the contest's five co-winners will be a featured show performer.
"I'd would be a great honor to be able to perform in the Charleston Cultural Center," Aadland said.
She said she considers herself "mostly a songwriter."
"Most of the fun is in composing and recording," she added.
Her music reflects her story, stories of those close to her, and insight that emerged from her professional work.
Aadland has performed on vocals and guitar with family members and friends in New Ulm, Mankato and the Twin Cities.
She and her band have performed at venues including the Rhine River Arts Center in New Ulm, Minnesota State University, Mankato; at the Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis and in Lanesboro.
Her band members have included Ben Schoper, guitars and bass; Luke Schoper, keyboards and percussion; Jessica Schoper and Julie Annette, backing vocals; Don Rollins, guitar and harmonica; Ben Young, drums; Lantz Dale, guitar; Margaret Louters and Lynne Weber, cello; and Dick Kimmel, mandolin.
A former high school choral director in Madelia, Aadland lived in New Ulm until moving to Bloomington recently.
Two years ago, she released a compact disc, Foreign Soul.
Aadland said contest votes can be cast on her behalf by visiting newsong-music.com/contest/regional rounds/2009/Midwest.html
She is also competing for a people's choice award on YouTube. Her footage from an MSU concert can be found at www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhKGGzmVKvk

MOUNTAIN STAGE NEW SONG CONTEST -- MIDWEST REGIONAL FINALIST 2009!
Rebecca Aadland's CD, FOREIGN SOUL, contains all original songs written by Rebecca. Instrumentation includes the talents of eleven Minnesota musicians -- guitars, keyboard, cello, mandolin, harmonica, bass, percussion. Rebecca's focus has been to write and perform songs that matter. Humor, honesty and paradoxical observations come to play in creating songs that seem to resonate with a variety of people and age groups. Rebecca holds a BS degree in music and a MS in counseling psychology. There is much in her songs for the broken hearted, seeking love again (Foreign Soul, Vulnerable, You’re Just Right, Ode to Crazy, So Sorry), those that dare to look closer at themselves (Feelin’ Bad, Racing Heart, Heal Me, Baby) & spiritual seekers that defy tradition (God Stuff, Gems, Woman, Breathe Easy). She wrote the following at the celebration of her CD release, "Here’s to loving boldly, embracing imperfection, appreciating beauty, and doing work that fills our soul!
