"Ray Wellz Interview at Aj&dbs"

Ray Wellz, Philadelphia.
Q. How did the project come into existence?
This project came from me wanting to display my talents to the world and help put my city on the map. I enjoy recording and creating songs and giving my fans music that they can appreciate.
Q.Who are the members of the band if any and please tell us about it?
Myself , I am a solo artist.
Q How would you describe your sound/genre?
Hip hop/rap/east coast/lyrical
Q. What formal training or previous experience do any of the members have?
I have been rapping for over ten years and gained my experience through battling other artist, performing and recording songs. I have become a better songwriter over the years and my flow has developed a lot over the years.
Q. Are you working w/ a producer on your upcoming album?
Yes, I'm working with Jahlil Beats from Chester, The Presidentz from Jersey City and Arjae Knox is from California. I kept the list of producers short for this project and all of them sent me some heat for my mixtape.
Q. Who would you say has been the biggest influence on the bands sound or that you have used as inspiration for your music?
I'm a fan of my cousin Myley Gates, Nas, Jay-Z and Jadakiss. I think they had an influence on my sound and you can hear my east coast sound throughout my music.
Q.What advice would you give to others starting out?
Never give up on your dreams and understand that everyone that hears your music will not like it. You have to be willing to accept rejection and have a great deal of confidence in yourself. There will be many obstacles you will have to overcome but stay positive and focused and surround yourself with people who will be honest with you and believe in your talents.
Q. Where can people go to learn more about you and hear your music?

I would want to perform at the Grammy's with my brother and cousin. Family is first and that's who I would want up on that sage with me.
Q. What has been your greatest experience so far either individually or as a whole?
Becoming a father to my son and daughter has been the best experience in my life.
Q. Do you have any upcoming events or news you would like to tell our readers about?
My mixtape "From Da Bottom" will be released in the spring of 2011 and I will be performing at various shows. My brother L. Gough will be releasing a project later this year and I will be contributing to his project as well.
Q. Where do you see yourselves or hope to be in about 5 years?
I see myself as CEO of an independent label and using my talents behind the scenes helping artist fulfill their dreams. - Aj&dbs

""F" Means Fun "H" Means Hip-Hop"

F’ means ‘Fun’
‘H’ means hip-hop

By Tom Waring
Times Staff Writer

The name of Jay "The Wolfman" Billin’s record company describes the type of rap/hip-hop artists he attracts.
Calm Down Records doesn’t sign anyone who’ll rap about guns or violence, use racial slurs or draw a gangsta following.
"It’s just entertainment," Billin said. "We’re just party people. We want to have fun and not be disrespectful."
Billin promises plenty of fun, entertainment and a party atmosphere on Saturday, July 14, at Copacabana, a Brazilian-owned bar/nightclub/restaurant at 6747 Castor Ave. (at Knorr Street) in Castor Gardens.
That night, he will perform as part on the Nightlife Party. He’ll be joined on stage by Ray "Wellz" Gough, Joshua "Husko" Moore and Charlie "Cook" Kim.
The entertainment also includes DJ Melly. Tickets cost $7 and are available only at the door. Anyone age 18 and older is welcome to attend. The show runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Billin is hoping for "a lot of ‘hood love" from rap/hip-hop fans in the Northeast.
"You have to be eighteen to party and twenty-one to drink," he said.
Billin, whose given name is John Taylor, came to Philadelphia from Virginia in 2004. He lives in Castor Gardens with Moore, his godson and fellow Virginian. They’ve teamed on a promotional CD.
The record company owner later signed Gough, a West Philadelphia native now living in Yeadon, Delaware County, and working as a youth mentor. He has his own CD.
Kim, a Rhawnhurst resident who moved here seven years ago from New York, has been with Calm Down Records for only a few weeks. He owns a grocery store on Castor Avenue and happened to strike up a conversation about music with Moore, who was there to buy a water ice.
The visit had a double benefit for Moore. When he placed down a CD featuring himself and Billin, a customer purchased it.
Besides the four artists and a fifth Philadelphia-based female rapper, Calm Down Records has performers in the Virginia and Washington, D.C. areas.
The upcoming show is the record company’s second, following a party at a club in Warminster.
Billin, a public school teacher, believes the rap/hip-hop industry can grow in Philadelphia.
"The talent is just overwhelming in Philly," he said. "This is the town of all towns."
Each of the artists has a unique style.
On stage, Billin is full of energy. He uses his "Wolfman" persona to pursue the ladies. Moore, from the Virginia country, is laid back and cool and a favorite of the young women. Gough has a unique flow to his sound. And Kim, of Cambodian descent, brings an Asian flair.
"We’re all on the same team," Billin said, "but we’re all different."
Moore, who works at a local pizza shop, said the different sounds of the artists win over the crowds.
"They say, ‘Wow. I haven’t heard anything like that,’ " he said. "Our sound and beats are crazy. That’s how new artists get established. They sound different."
Kim said the diversity of the group is one of its strengths.
"Us four, we all came from different places and have talent," he said.
Gough said studio rehearsals are going well, and the foursome can’t wait to take the stage for live feedback.
Each artist will perform separately.
"We want a big turnout," Gough said. "It’s our time. You can’t deny us."
The performers want a big turnout, but only for fans who don’t want any drama. There will be plenty of security to keep the show audience-friendly.
The owner of Calm Down Records wouldn’t have it any other way.
"We want to party and have a good time," Billin said. ••

"Next In Line: Dez"

4: In the beginning stages of your upcoming album, what producers have you worked with or would like to work with on this upcoming project?

I'm working with Mr. Goodpen, PortLife Music who's recorded songs with Beyonce, Akon, Players Circle, J Holiday and more. I just did a collab track with an artist named Ray Wellz produced by Jahlil Beats but I would like to work with Jahlil on some solo songs. I'm working with Stash House Records, Zim Productions and I would like to work with Simon Illa, who has previously produced a few songs for me. I would also like to work with D-Moet & Carvin Haggins (Karma Productions) & Destro who are major producers in the industry that I've worked with in the past. I'm pushing for a release date of August 31. - 24hourhiphop.com

This album is packed with originality and creativity. "THE RESOLUTION OF RAY WELLZ"

THE RESOLUTION OF RAY WELLZ
Words by: Keyshonna Norman

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, Ray Wellz is best described as versatile, creative, complicated, and willing to take risk pertaining to not following what other music industry artist are doing. “It's hard to figure me out as an individual,” he states, and indeed he is right. With a combination of Hip-Hop/Rap and all other music genres, Ray Wellz sits down with Echo Live Magazine and takes us on a brief journey through the eyes of one of Philly's finest and where music in his life came about.

Ray Wellz was inspired by his older cousin (Myley Gates) and as they were coming up he always saw Myley writing in his notebook and watching MTV. It seemed what interested Myley also interested Ray Wellz and he was only about 7 at that time. “When I actually wanted to rap, I went to a concert when I was 13 years old. The audience feedback and participation they were given to the local talent; the reaction from the fans inspired me to want to feel that way as well. B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clang especially Method Man, Nas, and have several other artist inspired me. From their I Started rapping at 13 years old but took the music industry seriously when he released his first album.”

Some artist prefer to freestyle create their lyrics first then obtain a musical beat to coincide with it, but not Ray Wellz. He states, “When I hear music instantly, I'm gonna vibe to it and it's gonna take me where I need to be and I let the music dictate what I'm writing. The material comes from lending and hears, in which my approach has changed. At one time, I wrote the music and let the beat fit the music that I hear. But now I listen to the beat first and instantly I know, and my writing starts. Some artist prefer to freestyle and so forth, as an artist you got to do what's best for you.”

Although it was hard to pick just one song from many of songs he has already created and is in the works, Ray Wellz says, “I record a lot of songs and it's hard for me to pick one song. Each song I write tells one story, and it's hard to identify what stands out. Theirs two songs, one is called, 'Man' this song was dedicated to my father who died ten years ago and he was my best friend besides being a great father. That song was my most personal song and tribute to the person that taught me how to be a man and follow my dreams. My second song is on my debut album (2 years ago). “I'm focused,' is a song that describes real life situations and have been told on many occasions how the song related to other fan and their circumstances.

At one time, Ray Wellz was against the generation of music but he had to wake up and realize that theirs an audience of people that likes the music, so if other people like it and enjoy, then he is all for it. “I came in the era where there were a lot of greats and lyricist, but now it's about being catchy and the banga of the beat.” He takes his time to write. “It would be very boring if everyone sounded the same, so many different sounds and its good. It shows how hip hop has evolved over the years. Sometimes I want to hear other music, switch up to club music, ya know?”

When asked, with no hesitation Ray Wellz answered that their definitely is a lack of female rappers. “The first female artist currently that comes to my mind is Nicki Minaj, and that's not really a good thing, being that she so far the only female rapper out right now.” On his new album, Ray Wellz reached out to a few female artists and felt that they need to be heard also. “They (female rappers) are very talented but the music industry is male dominated. I've heard several dis records of Nicki Minaj from other female rappers and I don't understand why they are coming at her when she is helping re-open the door of female artist. The hatred has got to stop and the door is wide open for female rappers but they got to work extra hard to get their.”

Ray Wellz released one album called “Best Artist of the Year,” which was released in 2008 under Calm Down Records and also one compilation album, self-titled for Calm Down Records (late 2007) which was also released under Calm Down Records. Ray Wellz has been featured on several DJ mixtapes, such as DJ TRUUF, Coast2Coast mixtape and many more.

“My direction is gonna be different this time. It's not a mixtape or an album; it's a Mix-Album. It will be free to download; the project is called “Live from the Bottom.” He has over 26 songs recorded, and has done collaborations with many producers such as Jahlil Beats, D&A Beats, The Presidentz and Arjae Knox, and many other producers.”

The artist that will be featured in Ray Wellz's “Live from the Bottom,” will be a lot of local Philly artist and raw talent that need the exposure. “Charilie Knucklez, Gauge, Pred, Fiya Chick, M.C Sha and many more. The anticipated completion of this “mix-album,” will be some time in the summer of this year. Also Ray Wellz is featured in a dvd that has dropped last month titled, “Hood Spotlight,” presented by Ron Geez. He is also featured on MicControl.com, an album review for his first album and a single review on his second album. Although Ray Wellz is an artist, he is also an entrepreneur. “Phillin Good Records,” is his own indie label and he is his first artist. Echo Live Magazine looks forward to promoting and encouraging Ray Wellz and his musical career. Ray Wellz music can be heard, downloaded and purchased on Itunes.com, Amazon.com, Rhapsody.com and a few other websites. So many things that
Encouraging words that Ray Wellz provides for all music artists: “Never stop believing in yourself. There will be a lot of obstacles but you have to be strong-minded and dedicated. Surround yourself with a group of people with similar traits because its easy to get discourage and distract you. A lot of people will try to knock you down! Continue to push yourself; you don't want to regret what you could have done. Give your 150% and keep going. "Rest in Peace to Ill-Man, he was an up and coming artist who left this earth too early.” He was an influence on my career and also again my cousin Myley Gates. - EchoLive.net

""Best Artist Of The Year" by Ray Wellz"

Best Artist of the Year, Ray Wellz's new album, features your typical subject matter that you see from a hip hop artists nowadays: hustling, making money, poppin' bottles, etc. while touching on the current state of hip hop and personal struggles at the same time.
Ray Wellz's introduction to the album "80's Baby" is a strong statement for the first song on his album. An old school beat where Wellz voices his opinion on the current state of hip hop - lazy. He goes down the list of '80s and '90s rappers from Biggie to Nas to Tupac to Mobb Deep explaining how hip hop was real, each artist with their own strengths and contributions to the hip hop scene. Now, he says it's all about the money and lacks creativity.
The album transitions into "Disaster," a track similar to "80's Baby," talking about fake rappers, this time with a bit of a harder edge to his message. Wellz's influences are obvious especially in the track "That's Ray Wellz" which sounds similar to "Big Papa." Ray Wellz seems to focus heavily on rappers lacking creativity and originality but Wellz seems to follow the influence of other rappers that are currently out there. His subject matter is similar to that of many other rappers and even the sound of some of his songs are similar to current rappers. "Middle Fingas" and "I'm Focused" sounds a lot like Young Jeezy even with Jeezy's signature gritty "YEAH" showing up in the song. It's difficult to determine whether or not it's an attempt at mocking the rapper or simjply his influence but either way it seems to conflict with the original messages seen at the beginning of the album.

That being said, the strong point of the album lies in Ray Wellz's writing ability. Wellz uses a lot of multi-rhyme verses, consistently using hte same rhyme throughout an entire verse. "If You Want To" one of my favorite songs on the album is a perfect example of this rhyming style. His multi-rhyme usage helps to pull you in to the verse, picking up on every line and becoming mesmerized as the his flow builds and builds.
Overall, Ray Wellz puts together a solid album. While the message sometimes gets confused with the content, Ray's skills stand out and continue to shine throughout the album. Ray's lyrical ability will grab your attention above anything else. Whether he's rapping about hustling, women, his past experiences growing up in a bad area, or the struggles he faces not making money with a baby on the way, Ray Wellz describes his thoughts in a way that intriques the listeners and forces us to listen to every line and truly understand what Ray is going through. I'm interested to see how Ray's style and content will develop as his life changes and his career grows. - Mic Control

The album is a collection of musical gems that has a unique sound and feel to it with no sampling. The introductory song “80's Baby”pays homage to the artists that paved the way for Wellz and other artists to have the opportunity to rap today and he continues to display love for hip hop to the last song. "Ray Wellz"

Philadelphia is really not the hot spot for underground rappers, but Ray Wellz is looking to change that perception with his debut album “Best Artist Of The Year” dropping December 20, 2008.

As a bit of a preview we have two songs off his album for your listening pleasure. Black Presidents Day is currently featured on ITunes and features a bit of a Jim Jones vibe, with the whole shout out in the background thing.

80’s Baby plays like a tribute to previous generations recounting the careers of everyone from Rakim and Nas, to the Lox and Tupac. It’s good to see someone finally giving respect to the old veterans of hip-hop. - The Umbilical Chord

"Ray Wellz"

Ray Wellz hit me up with some sweet new tracks droppin this weekend on itunes. as you might guess from the album art, Wellz is a rapper, who raps about some pretty regular fare (ie clubbing and hustling etc). I really really really dig his track, 'Switch Ya Hustle Up', which has a sweet hook and the beat complements it in a great way. Check it out - Aural Satisfaction

"New Single: "Man" by Ray Wellz"

We're starting this week off with Ray Wellz's new single "Man" produced by The Presidentz. Ray was featured on MicControl a few months ago for his album "Best Artist of the Year." One thing that stood out to me the last time I reviewed his music was his incredible writing ability, which seems to have only gotten better. "Man" is a track dedicated to his father and once again he shows off his lyrical ability rhyming about a subject that is close to his heart. Wellz's tribute to his dad is an emotional one that describes the inspiration his father was on his life. The combination of Wellz's ability to compose a catchy song mixed with the passionate lyrics of this song create a track that will pull the listener in and is easy to relate if you've ever lost someone that had a strong impact on your life. The melodic hook catches you with "I think about my dad every single day, he was a man in every single way" and gives a good synopsis of the relationship he and his father had. Wellz's ability to rap about a specific topic and convey a true sense of who he is and his personality really stand out in this song.

Not only is the song a great tribute to his father, but Ray Wellz's newest single is also great foreshadowing as to what's in store for his new album that he's currently working on. Wellz's writing ability seems to have improved based on this track alone and his new album may prove to be even better than the writing on his last album. Check back for more updates on Ray Wellz's upcoming album and check out his MicControl profile in the meantime for some more songs. - Mic Control
