"Unsigned Hype"

Hip Hop's got a new hero in Prophecy.

Words: Daren Hill

If a prophecy is one’s ability to foresee, or predict future events, then has Hip Hop’s new savior arrived? Prophecy the Saginaw, Michigan born Harvest, Alabama transplant is like two parts Biggie and two parts Nas, bringing listeners spine chilling lyrics that remind you there is more to songs then money, clothes, and cool. Influenced and encouraged by his older brother Shannon “ Science” Reece, this producer turned rapper has been putting in work on the underground circuit since 2001. With three mixtapes out, Prophecy’s future is looking brighter then a summer sun and no shade on his latest effort Due Season. With the soul sampled beats and lyrical poise, Prophecy immediately goes for the throat of competitors on the opening track, Lights Cameras Action, with pro lines (constantly breathing lyrics tell um blue as a smurfs face/ spitting lava in the worst way/ to the point I got people thinking/ the suns taking the earths place/gifted spitten phonetics/embedded form my legacy/poetically um just better then you genetically). It is quite clear that Prophecy is shooting for the number one spot with relentless vigor on the heavy hitting song King of the City (the dopest rapper breathing/how could you doubt um/ and not believe him/ there’s not another heathen breathing/ that could possibly beat him…). Proph’s complex metaphors and punch lines make his witty wordplay enjoyable, as he brings songs to life. On the track Dear Bro, Prophecy’s lyrics are so vivid you can almost feel and see the pain as he reminesises over lost loved ones. Without losing speed he smoothes it out on the radio friendly Love & Smile, all the while proving he can reach the masses worldwide. It’s business as usual on Hands Up, where he spits (I aint looking to collab/and make friends/ um here to take spins/and make ends). Prophecy proves he is a lyrical juggernaut that can flow bar for bar with the best of them. Never straying too far from the Pete Rock-like soul samples, does make this Ep a bit repetitive. However, his Braggadocios raps of the good life and impeccably sharp lyrics hook listeners from start to finish, making Due Season one of those albums you can’t get enough of. (Every breath that I breathe remains notable/ crush lines and similes/remain quotable). I’m no Nostradamus, but it’s not hard to see the wordsmith Prophecy has a true gift for gab. So keep your ears open because Proph maybe Hip Hops newest spokesman!

Bio

A prophecy is defined as the foretelling or prediction of what is to come. When a
little boy in Saginaw, Michigan started piano lessons in the fifth grade, there was a sure
sign that he would become a major player in the music arena. Picking up the bass guitar
and the saxophone along his way to becoming one of the hottest new talents in Hip Hop,
Prophecy shines both as both a producer and lyricist. Originally pursuing production exclusively, it was Prophecy’s older brother Shannon (who also rapped under the stage name Science) that encouraged the young lion to finally put his thoughts into words on a pad back in 2001. Although Prophecy realized he had a knack for rhyming, it wasn’t until the unfortunate loss of the same encouraging brother that he vowed to pursue rapping wholeheartedly. Armed with new determination to keep his brother’s legacy alive, Prophecy moved to Huntsville, Alabama and began hitting the studio hard to record his first project entitled 2 for 2. He would follow that up with his second album, Created Above Equal while simultaneously gaining features on various mixtapes. Prophecy also began building his production credits by making beats for local acts on the Alabama scene; as well as working with big name producers such as Bink. In early 2010, Prophecy received his highest press accolade when he was named the “Unsigned Hype” in the Source Magazine. With his latest releases, Due Season, Behind Bars, and Soul Survivor, Proph aims for the sky by showcasing his growth lyrically and sonically. The beats are neck-snapping, hard-hitting, and soulful----many at the same time. The wordplay is also clever and well-delivered. Prophecy has developed into the complete package and if his music is any indication of what’s to come, the future is looking very bright.
