HipHopDX Premiere: West Virginia rapper Ponce De’Leiouns has rolled through with his debut album, Ikon, and boasts guest vocals from artists like Rich The Kid and RiFF RAFF. One of his most recent collaborations was “Staring At The Sun,” which was featured on RiFF RAFF’s Balloween album, and he was also a guest on the RiFF RAFF and Rich The Kid remix of Dash Flash’s “Money Growing.” With 15 tracks, Ikon is a strong effort and an enticing introduction to the aspiring young rapper.
“‘Ikon’ to me is a rite of passage,” De’Leioun tells DX. “It’s an album. Not a mixtape—an album. Rappers comin’ up and rappin’ in the early ’90s used to dream of doing an album, not a mixtape. They used to think that was the way to show you made it, back before there was the internet. Saying, ‘Lemme just get this album out so people can hear my voice.’ With that in mind, I made an album.” - HipHopdx
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
EVER SINCE YOU WERE A LITTLE KID, IT WAS ALWAYS “MOM” WHO WAS THERE FOR YOU. AS YOU GOT OLDER AND WENT THROUGH SCHOOL, EXPERIENCING DIFFERENT THINGS, IT WAS ALWAYS “MOM” WHO WAS THERE TO HELP YOU FIGURE IT OUT. AS YOU GOT EVEN OLDER AND IT WAS TIME TO START A CAREER AND A FAMILY OF YOUR OWN, THAT’S RIGHT, “MOM” WAS THERE TO MAKE IT AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE.Ponce-De'LeouinSM
FOR BUBBLING STAR PONCE DE’LEIOUN, THE ROLE HIS MOTHER PLAYS CANNOT BE DIMINISHED ONE BIT. IN FACT, IF IT WASN’T FOR HER, THE WORLD MIGHT NOT KNOW WHO PONCE THE RAPPER IS TODAY. “I DO WHAT I DO BECAUSE OF MY MOTHER,” PONCE TELLS US. “HER STRENGTH AND MOTIVATION HELPED ME BUILD MY CAREER. I REMEMBER GROWING UP MY MOM HAD A LOT OF HEALTH ISSUES. SHE WAS IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL AND ALMOST PASSED MANY TIMES. FOR ME, THAT WAS THE BIGGEST MOTIVATION…”
SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH, PONCE’S MOTHER HAS BEEN A PART OF THE SWISHER FAMILY FOR QUITE SOME TIME — EVEN BEFORE PONCE — AS SHE USED TO WORK FOR US IN WEST VIRGINIA WHERE PONCE GREW UP. THE TALENTED EMCEE SAYS BECAUSE OF THAT, HE’S NOT ONLY A FREQUENT SWISHER USER TO THIS DAY, BUT NOW FEELS EVEN MORE PART OF THE FAMILY.
“I WAS ALWAYS AROUND SWISHERS GROWING UP,” PONCE REVEALS. “SWISHER BECAME A PART OF MY LIFE. NOW I AM IN CONTACT WITH SWISHER, DOING EVENTS, ETC., SO I CONSIDER THEM MY FAMILY. MOST PEOPLE JUST SMOKE SWISHERS BUT TO ME IT’S DEEPER THAN THAT. SO MUCH RESPECT FOR THE SWISHER FAMILY.”
THE SWISHER TEAM MADE PONCE A MEMBER OF OUR 2016 CLASS LAST YEAR, OFFICIALLY WELCOMING HIM TO THE SWEETS FAMILY. SINCE THEN, WE’VE DONE A LOT TOGETHER INCLUDING AN EXCLUSIVE C-STORE SESSION WHERE PONCE PUT ON A MEMORABLE, INTIMATE PERFORMANCE AT A LOCAL CONVENIENCE STORE. THEN THIS PAST MARCH, PONCE WAS ONE OF OUR MAIN PERFORMERS AT OUR ATX TAKEOVER EVENT IN AUSTIN, TX. HERE’S WHAT PONCE HAD TO SAY ABOUT THOSE EXPERIENCES:
“THE SESSION WAS FIRE, ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE; IT WAS DOPE RAPPING IN A STORE WHERE A COP WALKS IN AND JUST STARTS BREAKING OUT INTO THE ROBOT WITH PEOPLE AROUND ON THEIR PHONES. THAT WAS DEFINITELY A DOPE SESSION! ATX WAS DOPE! DEFINITELY GOOD VIBES ALL AROUND, SO MUCH FUN, DOPE SONGS. THE VENUE WAS NICE — WE HAD 3 BIG, DOPE ROOMS. HAD A LOT OF FUN OUT THERE WITH 21 SAVAGE, RICHTHEKID, AND CHANEL WEST COAST. ESPECIALLY WITH CHANEL WEST COAST SHE DEFINITELY HAD ME IN THERE LIT! GREAT VIBES, GOOD ENERGY DEFINITELY HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN!”
EVEN THOUGH WE DON’T NEED A SPECIFIC DAY TO DO IT, WE’D LIKE TO TAKE A MOMENT TO TELL ALL OF THE MOTHERS AND THOSE WHO FULFILL THOSE ROLES JUST HOW SPECIAL AND MEANINGFUL YOU ARE. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO. PONCE HAS A FINAL MESSAGE FOR YOU ALL AS WELL:
“LAST BUT NOT LEAST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY STAY STRONG, KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING. I KNOW WE MIGHT NOT ALWAYS BE DOING WHAT YOU WANT US TO BE DOING OR ACTING LIKE HOW WE SHOULD BUT YOUR JOB AS A MOTHER IS JUST MOTIVATE, ENCOURAGE, AND GIVE US LIFE. THANKS FOR SHOWING US HOW TO LIVE LIFE AND THAT LIFE IS A BLESSING SO GO OUT THERE AND MAKE SOMETHING OF IT! I HAVE MESSED UP, GOT KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL BUT MY MOM NEVER GAVE UP ON ME. SHE STILL MOTIVATED ME AND MADE SURE THAT SHE WAS MY BIGGEST FAN. SO THANKS FOR YOU MOM.” - Swisher Sweets
WHEN UP-AND-COMING INDIE HIP-HOP STAR PONCE DE’ LEIOUN DISCOVERED THE SWISHER SWEETS ARTIST PROJECT, HE WAS ON A NATIONWIDE TOUR WITH WAKA FLAKA FLAME, WHO HAPPENED TO HEADLINE AT THE SWISHER SWEETS ATX TAKEOVER DURING SXSW IN AUSTIN LAST MARCH. PONCE IMMEDIATELY KNEW HE WANTED TO COLLABORATE WITH SWISHER SWEETS AS HIS MOTHER HAD WORKED FOR SWISHER INTERNATIONAL IN WHEELING, VIRGINIA, YEARS AGO. HE REACHED OUT TO THE SWISHER SWEETS ARTIST PROJECT ON TWITTER AFTER THE EVENT AND IMPRESSED US WITH HIS SMART LYRICS AND SKILLFUL DELIVERANCE, AND THE REST, AS THEY SAY, IS HISTORY.
EARLIER THIS SUMMER THE SWISHER SWEETS ARTIST PROJECT DROPPED A CONVENIENCE STORE SESSION WITH PONCE DE’ LEIOUN FOR HIS HIT “APPLICATIONS” JUST AS HE WAS PLOTTING TO TAKE OVER THE INTERNET AND LAUNCH HIS MIXTAPE PROJECT YELLOW TAPE WITH THE LEGENDARY ENGLISH DJ TIM WESTWOOD.
WE RECENTLY CAUGHT BACK UP WITH THE TALENTED PERFORMER TO FIND OUT WHAT HE’S BEEN UP TO SINCE THE RELEASE OF HIS FIRST CONVENIENCE STORE SESSION. AND HE HASN’T SLOWED DOWN ONE BIT. TOURING THE STATES OF TEXAS AND ARIZONA WITH HIP-HOP ARTIST RIFF RAFF, LAUNCHING HIS NEW ALBUM, AND DOING FEATURES WITH SOME HEAVY-HITTING ARTISTS IS ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR THE WEST VIRGINIA BORN AND RAISED RAPPER.
CHECK OUT THE FULL INTERVIEW BELOW, AND WATCH OUT FOR HIS SECOND SWISHER SWEETS ARTIST PROJECT CONVENIENCE STORE SESSION “THE MAN” DROPPING SOON.
YOU’VE BEEN DOING BIG THINGS LATELY, FROM TOURING WITH RIFF RAFF TO GETTING A DISTRIBUTION DEAL. SHARE WITH US HOW THAT ALL HAPPENED!
I’VE KNOWN RIFF RAFF FOR A MINUTE NOW. HE’S ALWAYS SHOWN LOVE TO ME. AT FIRST, HE WAS A FAN OF MY FREESTYLES; THEN HE BECAME A FAN OF THE MOVEMENT. RIFF IS AWARE I MANAGE MYSELF. I GAINED HIS RESPECT, JUST AS I DID WITH WAKA FLOCKA FLAME, TIM WESTWOOD, AND OTHERS. NOW WE HAVE A SINGLE TOGETHER ON HIS LATEST ALBUM, WHICH IS CURRENTLY NO. 2 ON ITUNES. EVERY TIME WE LINK UP ON THE ROAD, IT’S CRAZY. THE LAST SHOW WE DID IN TEXAS, WE SHUT IT DOWN BECAUSE THERE WERE TOO MANY PEOPLE.
AS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION, IT’S LONG OVERDUE, BUT PERFECT TIMING. I JUST MADE PLACEMENT ON RIFF’S ALBUM A MONTH BEFORE MY FIRST ALBUM IS SET TO RELEASE.
I BRAND MYSELF YEAR AFTER YEAR. MY YOUTUBE PAGE IS MY RESUME. I’VE MADE APPEARANCES WITH WAKA FLOCKA FLAME, MIGOS, LIL YACHTY, TIM WESTWOOD, SNOOP DOGG AND MORE.
YOU’RE A RAPPER WITH A COLLEGE DEGREE IN MARKETING. TELL US HOW YOU USED THAT KNOWLEDGE TO GROW YOUR CAREER.
I LEARNED THAT NO MATTER WHAT SORT OF BUSINESS YOU DO, THE BASICS OF MARKETING ARE THE SAME: PRODUCT, PRICE, PLACE, AND PROMOTIONS. YOU CREATE A BRAND, GIVE IT A PRICE, DECIDE WHERE IT SELLS THE BEST, AND PROMOTE IT TO ITS TARGET AUDIENCE.
ONCE I LEARNED HOW TO MANAGE MY TIME, EVERYTHING ELSE CAME EASILY. I PUT ALL MY TIME AND MONEY INTO MAKING SURE MY BRAND WAS THE BEST. I’VE SELF-MANAGED MYSELF THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE CAREER BY APPLYING THE PRINCIPALS OF BUSINESS MARKETING TO MARKETING MY MUSIC. RATHER THAN CREATING THE IMAGE OF AN ARTIST, I CREATED THE IMAGE OF A BRAND THAT ACTS AS A WALKING BILLBOARD.
LIKE MANY OTHER RAPPERS, I DIDN’T COME FROM MONEY. I ALSO DIDN’T COME FROM A STATE WHERE HIP-HOP WAS POPULAR. THERE’S NEVER BEEN A FAMOUS RAPPER FROM WEST VIRGINIA. HOWEVER, I WAS ABLE TO GAIN THE RESPECT AND COSIGNS OF INDIVIDUALS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, LIKE TIM WESTWOOD (LONDON), SNOOP DOGG (CALIFORNIA), AND SWAY CALLOWAY (NEW YORK), DUE TO HOW I BRANDED MYSELF.
YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA GAME IS STRONG. GIVE OUR READERS SOME TIPS ON HOW TO GROW THEIR AUDIENCE AND LEVERAGE THAT TO HELP ADVANCE THEIR CAREER.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY. IT’S POINTLESS TO HAVE AN ACTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE IF YOU AREN’T GOING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. I SPEAK TO AS MANY OF MY FANS AS I CAN BECAUSE IT CREATES A RELATIONSHIP AND KEEPS THEM WANTING TO COME BACK TO SUPPORT ME. I’VE BRANDED MYSELF THIS WAY SINCE I STARTED. YOUR PRESENTATION IS ALSO KEY. YOU CAN’T EXPECT ANYONE TO RESPECT YOU, OR TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY IF YOUR BRAND DOESN’T LOOK SERIOUS. YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOUR GRAPHICS, PHOTOS, AUDIO, AND VIDEOS ARE ALL PROFESSIONAL. THE LOOK IS WHAT WILL ATTRACT PEOPLE TO YOUR PAGE, AND IF YOU CAN’T GET THEM THERE, IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO GROW YOUR FAN BASE.
YOU COLLABORATE WITH MANY ARTISTS. TELL US SOME OF THE LATEST ARTISTS YOU HAVE WORKED WITH AND HOW YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH COLLABORATIONS.
I’VE WORKED WITH A HANDFUL. MY ALBUM WILL SHOWCASE A FEW OF THOSE COLLABORATIONS SUCH AS RIFF RAFF, RICHTHEKID, FAMOUS DEX, SAM ADAMS, LANTANA, AND DORROUGH. I’M AT A STAGE IN MY CAREER WHERE CROSS MARKETING IS VERY EFFECTIVE, SO I LIKE DOING FEATURES, ESPECIALLY WHEN WORKING WITH ESTABLISHED ARTISTS. COLLABORATIONS HELP ARTISTS GROW. I NEVER THINK LOCALLY. I ALWAYS THINK GLOBALLY. I’M NOT ONE TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH BEING IN ONE PLACE OR HAVING CLOUT IN A SINGLE LOCATION. WHEN I COLLABORATE WITH OTHERS, IT’S SO I CAN CREATE A BUZZ IN THEIR STATE AND WITH THEIR FANS.
WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU?
I’M PLANNING ON RELEASING MY FIRST ALBUM NOVEMBER 2016, TOURING WITH RIFF JANUARY AND FEBRUARY OF NEXT YEAR, AND THEN HEADING BACK TO THE UK. I’LL ALSO BE PERFORMING IN TOKYO AND AFRICA. I PLAN ON DOING A LOT OF TRAVELING NEXT YEAR, RELEASING A LOT OF MUSIC, AND, HOPEFULLY, GRABBING THAT XXL FRESHMAN SLOT.

Make no mistake about it nothing shines stronger than honesty in presentation. People relate better to things that they can believe in. A fact not lost on Ponce DeLeioun. Key tastemakers within the industry share Ponce's own fervent belief in his own talent, most notably among them Big Dawg- Tim Westwood, Hip Hop Legend Tony Touch and current mix-tape King (Nas Resident DJ) DJ Green Lantern. There ís doing for yourself and then there ís doing for yourself. Up to this point, he has got this far with out any manager, publicist or anybody else. Given his current path, success will continue to come on his own terms: quickly. In the past few years he has quickly blazed through national tours, NYC artist appearances, WorldStarHipHop.com notoriety, and headlined venues across America's Rust Belt. Admittedly, the rap blogs have no shortage of talented rappers to cover and no shortage of young MC's promising to kill the rap game. But what is rarely covered is work ethic and will. Ponce has both in spades; be it on this side of the pond or the other. “Always forward I’m moving” Nas. 2014 has been a huge year for Ponce, yielding the evidence of growth that every artist strives for in his career. Most importantly being named #1 on Snoop Dogg’s Underground Heat countdown for his video “It’s on” and a freestyle on Tim Westwood’s BBC Radio 1 program. Both videos garnered huge hits online and it’s fair share of co-signs. Back in WV, Ponce has become something of a staple for the state, helping to open doors for younger artists coming up and showing them the path that he is paving. It seems Ponce’s consistent work ethic is finding new ways to pay off this year. After all they don’t call this game a hustle for nothing. .
