""A solid rock album from start to finish""

PLAYDEAF - "Super Sexy Market"
- Nathan Lawrence

Super Sexy Market is a rock album that’s more than the sum of its influences. Listening through the track listing, you’ll hear similarities to the aforementioned Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers, but also the likes of Bush, Deftones and even a pinch of Faith No More.

What this equates to is an album soundscape where the influences shift from track to track, resulting in a different flavour for every song; albeit, still unmistakably Playdeaf. From slower-paced rock tracks such as Alien Baby to rock the rock ballad Jet Black Cadillac and the foot tapping catchiness of Cheaters, Super Sexy Market is a solid rock album from start to finish. - Australian Penthouse Magazine

""An Album You Can Strip To" 4/5"

PLAYDEAF - "Super Sexy Market"

Toronto band Playdeaf’s latest release The Super Sexy Market is definitely super sexy. With its sultry, biting lyrics and deep, dark rock, it’s an album you can strip to (if you’re into that sort of thing). It is definitely intense. Vocalist/guitarist Playdeaf Jeff has a voice that makes your body tingle and would make for the perfect soundtrack to a mellow, intimate night in. It’s easy to lose yourself while listening to the album’s raunchy, trippy sound. Each song invites you in with a deep, drawn out intro and then captivates the ears with quick guitar and sharp bass. It’s hard not to press repeat as it makes you feel so alive when listening.

The 15-song album is a mixes hard, catchy gritty beats like “Alien Baby” and “Grow It Yourself” with slower, seductive tracks like “Right Behind You” and “Anna Nicole.” The darkness of the album is really apparent in tracks like “Struggle Whore” and “Cheaters.”

Standout track “Grow It Yourself” is a typical 20-something rock anthem about drinking and sex. “Alright baby let’s get drunk and let’s get crazy…” There is even a remix version infused with increased keyboard and heavier beats.

Playdeaf is a three-piece rock band from Toronto under Red Rebel Music consisting of vocalist/guitarist Playdeaf Jeff, drummer H-Bomb and bassist/keyboardist Chowder. They’ve made a name for themselves with their gutsy, passionate music that seems to captivate audiences from all over. Boasting over 1500 fans on Facebook as well as current airplay in Australia, Super Sexy Market and Playdeaf are bound for success. "Album Release - Horseshoe Tavern"

An impassioned rocker of a band that fires on all cylinders. Thumping basslines, supercharged guitars, and bombastic guitar-riffs, filtered through melodic vocals. When it all comes together, a solid live performance is a pretty sure bet. - Lonely Vagabond

"Playdeaf - Super Sexy Market - Album review"

Previously we said another band was the first band to request a review/shots from us. We were wrong. It turns out that Playdeaf sent us an email that went straight to our spam mail. As a result, we missed their album release party that took place on August 13th. We felt pretty bad about this, so I thought I should at least give Super Sexy Market a listen, and I’m glad I did.

Playdeaf is a 3-piece rock band led by frontman Jeff Payne (vocals, guitar) with Helder Defrietas (drums) and Chris Lam (bass, keys). Overall, Super Sexy Market sounds like a “guys album,” as the common themes in the lyrics seem to be women, sex, good/bad relationships from the male perspective, etc. That does not mean women can’t appreciate Playdeaf, though. They put together a rock album full of catchy riffs and solid vocals, which are personally my favourite part of the album. Jeff’s voice is hard to ignore and I think I’ll be bold enough to say that it is somewhat akin to the Josh Hommes of the world. If nothing else, Jeff’s voice is something to appreciate.

The album has a rock anthem feel, as a lot of tracks sound so heavy and bold. I would say this is an album that is probably best heard as a whole, rather than by individual songs. These guys find a way to rock pretty hard, but also know when to slow it down a little with some brooding tracks. Actually, after you listen to the album, be sure to check these guys out live. There is no doubt in my mind Playdeaf knows how to rock the stage. Don’t forget to buy them shots! - BuyingShotsForBands.com

"Alien Baby Review"

PLAYDEAF - "Alien Baby"
(Independent 2008)

You have to hand it to Canadian rockers - they are top notch and ahead of their game! First Toronto brought us Alexisonfire from St Catherines then Billy Talent out of Mississauga ... now it's hard rock trio, Playdeaf ...

Zoning in on the turf made famous by luminaries such as Alexisonfire and Linkin Park - Playdeaf also trickle in some basslines that would make Metallica proud. They're hard working and passionate about their music and if this is what they can produce in their bedroom - imagine what they would sound like under the watchful eye of a proper hard rock producer!

It's dark, heavy and brooding - the vital ingredients for any rock band ... they've also added a hint of teen angst to ensure their market is captured perfectly. They're the kind of band that young guys would dig because of their rebellious sound and young girls would be "in love" with them because they are hot!

Lead singer, Jeff Payne, has a knack of writing killer rock anthems and ensuring that the mood is just placed right with the way he chooses to sing each song. Key tracks include "GIY", "Jet Black Cadillac", "Angel Wreck" and "Torque".

Oh to be 17 again ... because Playdeaf would be my guilty rebellious musical pleasure!

Bio

With a sound that has been described as dark, heavy and brooding - Playdeaf’s contribution to the world rock music scene is unquestionable.

“In its purest form, rock music should be a mix of melody, lyric and voice with a sound so pure and tantalizing”, says frontman Jeff Payne. Playdeaf is the embodiment of this statement.

What began as Payne’s early start making music on his Mac, the addition of drummer, Helder DeFreitas and Chris Lam on bass and keyboards, birthed a musical partnership of intoxicating boldness and creativity.

Playdeaf’s sound is pure, raw and uncompromising, layered with passionate, gut punching vocals, dynamic bass lines and lavish drum and guitar tones. Live, this lethal mix of textures is overwhelming.

While many artists are touted the “next big thing” … Playdeaf has been putting in the hard yards to make that tag 100% accurate.
