The debut album "World in Black" by artist P*I*A is ready to be released. As a true labor of love she poured her heart into and it is certainly one of her biggest achievements this year.
Celebrate with her at the pre-release party on Friday Dec. 14, 2012 at Parkside Lounge. To be played are special live versions of the songs and everybody who comes receives a free pre-release download of her debut album.
The band is magnificent. On drums is Andreas Winter, fresh of his long-standing residence with Cirque de Soleil. On base is Eddy Khaimovich, Israeli bassist, recipient of multiple America-Israel Cultural Foundation grants. On guitar is Steven Ciric. And P*I*A does vocals. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 USD.

"World in Black"

World in Black (that I turn red) is the title of the Debut album of bavarian born Pia Zierhut a.k.a. P*I*A for which she already received a singer-songwriter award of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers ASCAP.
The title alone shows courage and self-confidence which is reflected in her biography.
The connection to her current hometown of choice New York was established in 2001. She left her art studies in Nuremberg to go on a "Walz" pilgrimage which is a tradition to develop your artistic skills and your character usually practised within the craftsmanship circles of Germany.
That's how she deepened her musical talents and managed to finish an entire album with renowned musicians in equally such renowned studios for the most part in New York City.
The result is a conceptual album dedicated to light, music and universal love. It shows by being psychedelic from beginning to end and leaving lots of space.
"Timothy Leary would have been impressed" a critic writes which is musically supported by an abundance of rich reverb effects on her voice, the electric guitars and keyboards.
Against classic conventions the songs begin or end often with an instrumental part or are interconnected with each other.
The voice sounds airy in Hey Joe (Would You) and You! or rocks in Honeymoon in a loop-duett with itself.
Very nice are the passages with Arabian-inspired chants (Go & Find Love, My Love).
The title song and Whispering in the Mornin' show through a dry and different sonic perspective P*I*A's high vocal skills and remarkable singer and songwriter qualities.
Bottom line: For lovers of the music of the 60s and 70s and for dreamers ...

Der Termin war eher Zufall, aber ein bisschen lustig findet es Pia Zierhut schon, dass ihr Debut-Album ausgerechnet am 21. Dezember rauskommt, dem Tag, für den der Maya-Kalender angeblich den Weltuntergang vorsieht. Jedenfalls: Ab heute, Freitag, ist „World in Black“ auf den einschlägigen Download-Portalen wie iTunes, Amazon oder CDbaby erhältlich. „World in Black“ ist ein konzeptuelles Album, sagt die aus Schweinfurt stammende Multimediakünstlerin, die seit einigen Jahren in New York lebt. Im Juni wird sie das Album in der Disharmonie vorstellen.

Der Schwerpunkt der Instrumentierung liegt auf der Gitarre, allerdings nicht so sehr im Singer/Songwriter-Tonfall, sondern durchwegs eher süffig und opulent. Die hohe, klare und sehr saubere Stimme Pias ist mitunter leicht umwölkt, mitunter schneidend direkt oder rockig-groovig. Das fernöstlich-psychedelisch inspirierte Intro gibt gewissermaßen den Ton vor: anspruchsvoller – gar nicht so schwarzer – Pop mit viel Klangfantasie und etlichen außereuropäischen Einflüssen. So gibt es arabisch anmutende Melismen, etwa im Titelsong „World in Black (that I turn red)“ oder in „My love revised“, oder Anklänge an indische Harmonik wie in der Nummer „Hey Joe“.

Unter den Musikern sind der New Yorker Gitarrist Marvin Sewell, sonst musikalischer Leiter in der Band von Jazzsängerin Cassandra Wilson. Drummer war Ray Newton, sonst unterwegs mit Soulsängerin Melba Moore. Aufgenommen hat Pia Zierhut in den MSR Studios New York, wo Legenden wie Led Zeppelin zugange waren und einem schonmal Roberta Fleck („Killing me softly“) über den Weg laufen kann. Gemischt hat Sven Peks in seiner Audiolodge in Gaibach. Für die Songs, die sie fast alle selbst geschrieben, arrangiert und produziert hat, hat Pia Zierhut schon einen Songwriter Award der ASCAP, des amerikanischen Verbands der Komponisten und Autoren, erhalten.

Er endet mit dem Urknall, der ätherische Sternentanz auf der Leinwand der Disharmonie: Man merkt, dass die Wahl-New-Yorkerin Pia Zierhut unter anderem Videokünstlerin ist. Die Ex-Kunststudentin „auf Reisen“, kehrte mit ihrer neuen CD „Songs in 3D“ in ihre Geburtsstadt zurück. Mit den 3D-Effekten im Hintergrund klappt es nicht so ganz (es fehlen schlicht die Brillen). Aber die ruhelos wandernden, sich spiegelnd fortpflanzenden Blumenranken, wirbelnden Gestirne und Planeten, psychedelisch wabernden Farben, Formen und Gesichter sehen auch so faszinierend aus – Timothy Leary wäre beeindruckt gewesen.

Dazwischen Bildsequenzen: Flocken fallen vom grauen Großstadthimmel, Menschen eilen im Schatten von Hochhäusern vorüber, es könnte Schnee, aber auch der Fallout von Ground Zero sein. „Hey Joe“, heißt der Song, der unter dem Eindruck des 11. September 2001 entstanden ist, unter dem, so die Künstlerin, „traurigen Himmel über New York“. Was auch immer dieser Tag der sonstigen Welt an Unheil gebracht haben mag, ihre heimliche Hauptstadt, „the City“, hat er im Innersten getroffen. Amerika kann auch sehr sensibel, sanft und verletzlich sein, lautet eine der Botschaften von Pias intimen Liedern. Ehemann Steven Ciric aus Chicago begleitet an der Gitarre, steuert den zarten, hochfliegenden Tönen Blues- und Folkrock-Elemente bei.

Der musikalische Biss in den Big Apple schmeckt ansonsten süß, manchmal zartbitter, Zierhuts amerikanische Songs sind eindringlich, haben naiven Charme und wären trotz allen Experimentierens wohl kaffeehaustauglich. Es geht um allumfassende Liebe und menschliches Bewusstsein – akustisch wie visuell. P*I*A lautet ihr Künstlername, mit Sternchen, was, für Persönlichkeit, Identität, Authentizität steht.
