Phil Jones Band

Family is a theme to often missing from the world of Pop music. Phil Jones seems to be bridging this gap with songs like “Gone” which are full of depth and passionate lyricism. This is definitely dedicated to the one he loves, but unlike the Mamas and Papas, Phil’s family saga nixes the heart break and drugs in exchange for serenity and true love.

This richly layered song is paired with scenic visions of Phil’s homeland Kawaii and the ridiculously mellow activities of a centered couple. They enjoy a hike through the bucolic green land, children in toe, stopping under waterfalls and shady trees to take it all in. When the refrain calls out “it’s on, it’s on, it’s on” its clear to see this is a satisfied man with a satisfied song.

How amazing is it that someone can pine over his lover after so many years, kids, changes, etc… pretty damn amazing. Its easy to whip up a song based on the hormonal pulses of lust, but to really dig deep and come up with something invigorating and sexy about a long term relationship, that’s magic. Curious why Phil doesn’t end up with his wife in the infinity hot tub by the end, but I suppose the sensual island man pulling us into his exotic web is just as steamy.

Phil Jones is a lyric-driven rock singer/songwriter who hails from Kauai, Hawaii. He’s the type of artist I instantly respect because of the genuine nature of the music and the lyrics. He is naturally a “truth sayer”. Like the great philosophical songwriters and lyricists of our time like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Sprinstein, Phil Jones typically writes about positive change, politics, human rights, love, redemption, and personal growth. It’s artists like Mark Lanegan and Leonard Cohen that come to mind when listening to Phil’s deep, raspy baritone, although he has his own distinct tone.

With subtle electronic elements guiding the dark acoustic composition “The Perfect Wave”, Phil tells haunting tales and delivers some serious warnings before the progression lifts for the chorus, and the brilliant line “I’m sending out the perfect wave” emerges. “Are You Aligned?” continues the journey into electronic Americana territory, asking “Are you aligned? It’s evolution time”. Soaring backup vocals lift the chorus to drive the message home and the guitars are reminiscent of the great Chris Isaak with their ominous twang. As the beat progresses, it sounds almost dance-esque, which serves as a well done fusion of styles. Phil did a video for the song, which contains some appropriate Occupy protest footage. Over the years we’ve seen rock, pop, and even hard rock slowly erode into over-commercialized, corporate puppet shows providing music that is extremely sing songy, predictable, popish and highly corporate. I hereby call this new breed of music “Poser Rock” and I want to personally thank all the corporate giants for successfully transforming “Sex Drugs & Rock n’ Roll” into “Yoga, Vitamins, & Nikelback” Of course millions of musical lemmings don’t know the difference, but not everyone is entertained. Talking to many music fans out there the response is overwhelming. Give me something new, something with a positive message, something that’s pushes the emotional envelope with a fresh sound that doesn’t leave it soul at the door.

So across my desk slides the new 5 songs EP by Hawaii based Phil Jones : http://www.facebook.com/PhilJonesBand entitled “Raise-Up.” What I heard put a smile on my face. It’s a nice easy flowing record that delivers solid songwriting with a nice rock feel. Jones reminds me of a modern day Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Lifehouse, and Eric Clapton with a classic Ventures guitar groove. You will also hear a side of Rhythm and Blues, Alternative Rock, Classic Rock and even Pop. If you like the above bands you should definitely check out this CD. “Raise-Up” by Phil Jones is an invigorating. Invigorating in the sense that it will lift your spirits, and give you a sense of hope for a better tomorrow.
