"...Every so often, in time, a different sound bursts on to the music scene. This is one of those times. The magical sounds of PETRELLA...hypnotizing us over weaving rhythm & blues horns. Country joins Soul!" - Cashbox Magazine
Petrella serves a deep-dish country sound, slipping onto the scene from Hot Springs, Arkansas. She's definitely a country singer, but her voice has an urban twang and you can't listen to her without thinking of Tina Turner.
Now that's out of the way, so we can talk about Petrella's own style, which is unforgettable after one listen. "Running for the Border" is lively, "Feel a Drought" has a yearning sound, "Paint It the USA" describes a true patriot, reminding us of the beauty, strength, and humanity that still exists.
Dreams of the Heartland is a full-bodied piece that pulls you into the south, into the west, and it's a little too funky to be blues, a little too country to be jazz, so Petrella walks a new line called country soul.
Certainly, Petrella is a one-of-a-kind on the scene. Her music follows its own track, but it goes through straight into the big land of country music, and yet it opens the door to a new sound. Rather than sticking to the standard country fare, the formula of old hits, she dishes up new words, new thoughts and a special place for that distinctive voice of hers.
Petrella and Davis Scheffler collaborate on the songs, and the backgound vocalists are worth mentioning because I liked that layer: Natisse, Burnadette Jones and Dennis Clark.
"Fixin'" has a bit of blues and a bumpy grind-groove. "Riverbed Home" tells the tale of those who live in the interval of a river or a delta bed and face the regular flood. Her voice cries their sorrow and speaks for all who face the forces of disaster.
There's no reason this woman shouldn't have a wide following across the country, if this CD is anything to go by. "From This Moment On" brings out the smoother tones in her voice, proving she can croon a happy wedding song as well as she does the more serious songs on this album.
Petrella's Dreams of the Heartland is worth having a listen to with her great guitar, high energy and cool lyrics. And have a go at Countryversial, released in 1993, while you're at it.

Since her 1993 debut CD “Countryversial” Petrella has mixed up soul and country music in ways that no one else has managed to duplicate. She's got a strong, confident, bluesy voice that belts out her soul-tinged country ballads with conviction and a good natured grace. 100 Proof Woman features a backing band with a strong horn line and bass line that reinforces her powerful voice. Highlights include the title track, “100 Proof Woman,” “All My Heroes Played Guitars,” “The Glory of Love,” and “Every Time You Go Away.” - Calvin Powers
"Petrella's vocals emit strong elements of soul. country, blues ;and rock and roll, and has her attracting a loyal following of fans crossing all lines of music taste" - Ambassadors of American & International Culture
“Her music is a marriage of gospel, country, soul, and roots rock. And it is beautiful. Her vocals are well trained and focus on creating full fledged harmony. The songs are well written, masterful looks at country and soul and their common bridge." - smother.net
"a true vocal power house who will lead you to believe that every song is sung by a completely different person" by Matt Yeager of the Morning News - Morning News
We are playing the track "Glory of Love". You would be surprised how many callers are asking "Who is this young lady singing. Compliments to her on her CD, she is an extremely talented woman. Send us other material and we will give her airplay. - The Skipper
"The self-titled lead-off track from 100 Proof Woman sounds as if Tina Turner went country, featuring a rustic rhythm with Petrella wrapping her soulful vocals around horn and organ spikes. And the lyrics are totally country, as the tune kicks off with an angel and a shining halo and ends with a shot of Southern Comfort." - Arkansas Gazette-Democrat Sync Weekly

The album's "All My Heroes Played Guitars" is a singing history lesson over funk guitars and horn blast, but it also offers hints at Petrella's musical incluences, from Loretta Lynn to Reba McEntire". - Arkansas Gazette-Democrat Sync Weekly
