Twenty-two-year-old Patrick C. Walker II, along with G’ovonnie family members Swag, Stacks, and Stamp, formed the hip-hop band SwatSqad in 2001. SwatSqad has played at clubs such as DC’s Mirrors and Baltimore’s Taste Lounge. But their breakout song was this year’s She’s Like That. The song received more than 100,000 plays in less than six months on the Internet.
Patrick, can you share more about your music and current work?
I’m an aspiring hip-hop artist working on a new release "Da Creeps Vol. I" and I also work for Metro Access.
So you’ve been working for Metro Access for several months. Does this job offer you any use of technology?
Besides GPS, no. (laugh)
How do you define status in entertainment?
I consider myself primarily a musician, in particular one who makes melody. You have to have the ear, to understand what melody fits to what beat.
Please share your personal reflections regarding ICT’s impact on you as an urban individual. Has it meant access to a market you wouldn’t normally have?
I use laptops or a computer desktop to record. If I didn’t have those, I would have to purchase hours at a local studio, and that could be costly. They lease the same equipment I use at home for $65 an hour. It’s a smarter investment to purchase my own studio equipment. It is the same with the Internet. I can upload and get our music to a larger market, compared to just playing locally.
Does broadband speed matter?
I’ve used dial-up and cable. I think the difference is
