Paper Parlor: The Perfect Blend All members of Paper Parlor were heavily influenced by music from a young age. With musical parents and parents who had extensive vinyl collections, it’s almost as though it was meant to be. What began in 2011 as a folk experiment between Wilson Johnson and Kirdan Wenger, has turned into a psychedelic/indie/folk combo fourpiece group. A band that offers not only a modern, groovy and eclectic sound, but listeners will definitely hear a lot of the classic rock influences of Zappa, Zeppelin and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in there, too. There’s not another band out there at the moment who has quite the same sound as Paper Parlor. And folks are taking notice of this eclectic, blended sound. Paper Parlor won the Hard Rock Rising Annual Competition this year for their region. The competition is a “battle of the bands” to showcase new, aspiring artists, and give them the opportunity to be recognized in their region for being the best of the best and to win prizes and band gear. According to Wenger, “It’s a worldwide competition that started out in small regions, and then was narrowed down to the winners of each group,” he said. “We won for the midwest region, which included Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wisconsin and Iowa.” And their win was based solely off of live performances—and who wouldn’t choose Paper Paper Parlor after seeing one of their highenergy performances. When asked what they enjoyed most about performing in front of a live audience, Moriah Skye said, “Definitely the energy...the stage endurance kicks in and you kinda go with it.” Wenger said “I like the ability to strum on a guitar and get an entire room of people dancing, and meeting all of the different people that end up at our shows.” “We find little holeinthewall places in different towns, each with different audiences in different places,” he said. So what’s next for Paper Parlor? They are currently working on putting out a fivesong, live EP titled, “Guac N’ Roll: A Live EP,” which was recorded at a friend’s studio over two days...with all the material tracked in a live setting. “Expect a warm and laidback retro sound with a lot of 70s tones,” Wenger said. “It’s definitely a more positive album, a lot about good vibes.” The EP was an experiment with getting different production styles onto a record, and is the framework for how they are going to be creating their second, fulllength album, which they hope to start working on soon. Paper Parlor is: Kirdan Wenger (guitar/vocals), Wilson Johnson (bass guitar), Moriah Skye (lead guitar) and Chad Hoffland (drums).
