Band of the Hour: Origen
By Rayme Samuels
The first step to knowing where you're going in life is to recognize where you come from. Origen, or "origin" in Spanish, is a hot new group that pays homage to their heritage while producing powerful rock en Español beats inspired by the future. They're a cultural mélange made up of Isabel Rueda, aka Mirs, lead vocalist from Ecuador; Hector Velazquez, guitarist from Venezuela; Ruben Martinez, bass player from Mexico; and Tonio Cuto, drummer from Venezuela. "Since each band member comes from different countries, we felt that the word 'origin' represents us. Through our music we always try to reflect back to our origins," explained Mirs.
Ruben, Tonio and Mirs, who have all known each other since high school, decided that it would be fun to form a band. The only problem? No one knew how to play an instrument. This proved to be a temporary hurdle, as the band quickly taught themselves and each other how to make beautiful music. Hector came along a few years later to round out the group on the guitar.
Describing their experience in this city, Mirs said, "Playing for Miami audiences is an electrifying experience that becomes an actual adventure. First of all we are a Miami band, so Miami is our 'casa.' Second, Miami's enriching culture variety makes it an opportunity to reach out to different nationalities. This gives us the chance to learn different rhythms and musical flavors to implement in our sound."
Growing up in eclectic South Florida, they have each been bombarded with different musical styles including Matchbox 20, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Police, The Jam, Beatles, The Rolling Stones, John Mayer, Coldplay, U2 and Soda Stereo. They also find influence in Latin acts such as Gustavo Cerati, Mana, Shakira, Ricardo Arjona, King Chango and Publico.
Their self-titled debut album, which can be found at various outlets online, was borne of a creative process where each band member contributed lyrics and music in a true team effort. For example, "Muñeca Rota," a song that talks about a girl who always felt neglected by people around her because of her looks, was written in one day during a beach get-together with an acoustic guitar.
Next on the horizon for Origen is the release of their soon-to-be-announced second single, as well as a music video to go with it. They're also working on planning a tour that spans the east and west coasts as well as Puerto Rico. All along the way, Origen remains dedicated to giving back to their local and Latin American communities by supporting charities and non-profits organizations. In the spirit of karma, many good things are sure to come their way in the future.
Origen performs at Mansion on Thursday, Oct 30th at 10 p.m. For more info, visit origenweb.com - Miami Herald www.miami.com
The first band I did get to see was Origen, a rock band that leans towards the fun and jaunty pop sound. Fronted by the energetic and charismatic mujer Mirs, this is the type of music that I could totally see my older daughter getting excited about, as sort of a gateway drug into rock in español.

An emerging ORIGEN sound
Click to Review
by Melissa Vargas / meli@fabrikalink.com
Their ORIGEN is what they are most proud of, are you?
Latinos have been in an effortless drive to explore and represent their, our, culture. This is how ORIGEN comes to life, a band native of Miami, with members native of places all over Latin America, ready to show the world their love for Spanish rock. With a production on its way and many gigs on their backpack, they unfold their journey to the different stages around Miami, and soon the world.
FABRIKA: Who makes up the band? How long have you been together?
Mirs – Voice
Hector – Guitars
Ruben – Bass
Carlos – Keyboard/guitar
Tonio – Drums
FABRIKA: What influences does each member have?
MIRS: Mana, Café Tacaba, Ricardo Arjona, Enanitos Verdes, Hombres G, Huecco, Alejandro Sanz, Julieta Venegas, Shakira, Soraya, Juan Fernando Velazco, Tercer Mundo, Pericos, Aterciopelados, Auténticos Decadentes, Molotov, Soda Estereo, Vilma Palma, Fito Páez, Ricardo Montaner, Mecano, Andrea Boccelli, Roció Durcal, Duran Duran, Ricky Martin, Bebe, Amaral, Cranberries, Bon Jovi, Dover, System of a Down, U2, Metálica, The Beatles, Life House, Nirvana, Three Days Grace.
HECTOR: My influences are quite varied. Some of them include: Oasis, Soda Stereo, U2, Pearl Jam, Los Amigos Invisibles, The Doors, Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, among others.
RUBEN: Juan Luis Guerra, Creed, Marcos Witt, Intocable, La quinta estación, Dave Mathews Band, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Marc Anthony, UB40, Martin Valverde, Fonseca, Carlos Vives entre otros.
CARLOS: I listen to different styles and genres. From the electronic to the more ethnic styles, from the rhythmic to the more eclectic. Most of my influence comes from bands like U2 and Coldplay, in contrast with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the rhythmic fusion of bands like Los Amigos Invisibles, King Changó, and Desorden Público; all native of my home country, Venezuela.
TONIO: Mine include: Alex Gonzales (Mana), Matt Forum (GNR/Velvet Revolver), Mike Portnoy, Tico Torres, Larry Mullen (U2). As bands my influences are Matchbox 20, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, U2, Soda Stereo, Mana, Shakira, Ricardo Arjona, King Chango
FABRIKA: How was the beginning of the band?
RUBEN: Since the beginning we have played in different concerts, festivals, and clubs where fortunately we've had a good response from the audience.
TONIO: The band started about six years ago, a couple of friends from school got together to do music because the boredom was immense. At that time none of us had much experience with music.
FABRIKA: Tell me a little bit about the career of the band until now.
HECTOR: Well it hasn't been easy, many nights without sleep rehearsing, knocking on doors, looking for opportunities to show our music. It has been worth it because we do what we love with a lot of drive. the response from the audience is also a big motivation, we have been gaining a big number of fans that follow and support us, which I have no words to thank them enough.
FABRIKA: Tell me about your first production. Who? How? When? Where?
ORIGEN: We are very happy to announce that we are working in our first production, under the label BinaryStar Music. The project will be under the production of Henry Otero and Carlos de Yarza, producer/composer as well as a Grammy nominee who has worked with artists like Gloria Estefan, The Beach Boys, The Spice Girls, GinaG, Menudo, Carlos Ponce, Chayanne, among others.
FABRIKA: What expectations do you have with this production?
MIRS: We want this production to be the platform to get us to be known, the instrument to reach the hearts of the people who share a love for life and the world through our music. We want this production to be the push for more to come.
CARLOS: Is our first production so it really is a project full of aspirations which we hope will captivate the Hispanic audience. We very enthusiastic about having the talent of Carlos de Yarza and Henry Otero of BinaryStar Music supporting this project.
FABRIKA: Which have been the biggest obstacles until now?
ORIGEN: Mostly balancing our other responsibilities along with rehearsals and gigs.
FABRIKA: What is the next step for the band?
TONIO: Now we are giving our complete concentration to our first production which still does not have a title. We will be writing and recording a few months only.
FABRIKA: A message to all the FABRIKA readers.
MIRS: Fight for what you want, be positive, appreciate what is truly worth it and always be happy.
HECTOR: To FABRIKA, thank you for always supporting good upcoming talent. We hope you guys enjoy our work.
RUBEN: We wish you all the best today, tomorrow and always, be on the lookout for our album, it'll be available soon. God bless
CARLOS: Destiny brought us to Miami. We are here, far form our homeland, but representing our ORIGEN (origin). We have faith in the Latin and local talent, we hope that more artists continue to grow and come about to represent our music.
TONIO: To everyone in FABRIKA, I want to invite you to check out our website www.origenweb.com and I want to thank them for always supporting local bands.

It was no joke when guitarist Hector Velasquez said, "Three Venezuelans, an Ecuadorian and a Mexican walk into a bar ... "
Velasquez isn't kidding. He's actually ticking off the nationalities behind Origen, a Latin rock outfit from the 'burbs of western Broward County.

Bio
From the moment Origen hit the stage for the first time at a high school variety show, they have received an incredibly warm reception from audiences. Their captivating music, appealing melodies, and energetic performances, have created a buzz which has taken them from that high-school stage to showcases around the country and of course all over their home state of Florida. Inevitably, the latin rock band landed a record deal and released their self titled debut album ORIGEN in 2008.
Origen is led by the charismatic Mirs (Ecuador) on vocals, along with Ruben (Mexico) on bass guitar, Hector (Venezuela) on guitars, and Tonio (Venezuela) on drums. Coming from different backgrounds and cultures did not stop the four driven and ambitious members from getting together, to the contrary ever since they met they decided to turn their dreams into goals and write songs about their personal experiences.
Hence the release of Origen's ten track debut album, filled with a sizzling mix of hard-rocking catchy pop songs, mid tempo groovy sing-a-longs, and sensuous slow jams, that caught the Latin Rock scene by surprise. Media outlets nationwide have been quoted as saying that Origen is "a gateway drug into Rock En Español". Other publications have said that Origen's performance "will have your beer sloshing from gleeful pogo moves reminiscent of old-school alternative music scenes."
Since the critically acclaimed release, Origen has gone from zero to sixty in no time. They have been featured on prestigious TV shows like "Encuentro con Daniel Viotto" on CNN and "Al Rojo Vivo" on Telemundo. The romantic power pop ballad "Te Quiero" was premiered on one of Miami's top Latin radio station, Romance 106.7 FM, which gained significant airplay.
The band's second single and video "Coexiste" was launched in Miami to a sold out crowd, the event was held in conjunction with MTV's Staying Alive foundation, an organization that promotes education and tolerance about HIV.
Recently, being selected as the opening act for international pop band Camila (both Todo Cambio Tour and Dejarte de Amar Tour), Daddy Yankee, Reik, and landing a sponsorship by Fender Mexico, Origen continues to ride a wave of success, that is quickly making them one of the next great Latin-American pop/rock acts on the planet.
Origen is now recording their sophmore album, Mentiras en Estereo.
