Review for ONYXRED's last CD entitled "The Calling."
Ah, modern rock, is there anything better, especially when it is done well, like Onyxred’s debut The Calling? I’m fairly certain I could listen to it all day. I have been listening to this record for a few days straight and I have to say it is pretty good.
The Calling really brings to mind the work of bands like Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace and Sevendust, and is smart enough not to be classified as simple nu-metal, even though it has some nu-metal tendencies throughout. It works well as a more mainstream version of modern rock. The resilient and ever-changing vocals along with the powerful (and talented) guitars, really drive each track. You can tell that Onyxred is passionate about each track they have laid down no this record. Reflections and Pray are good examples on what I’m talking about here; you can just hear the emotion brimming in the guitar work and the vocals.
Onyxred also crafts music that is easy to follow along to. The verses are easy to comprehend and the choruses are full of great hooks, a testament to their song writing, and song composition. One thing I haven’t mentioned yet, the drums, is another reason why the music has depth, and why the music itself is so easy to follow.
My favorite track is the closer, Ten, and that might be a cliché because this is the semi-hidden track of the record, meaning that you need to wade through around five minutes of silence after the actual song ends in order to access the Untitled acoustic track at the end of this record. This track, to me, is the most endearing, heartfelt track, not only because it is acoustic, but because it shows me the band’s, and vocalist’s, diversity.
I loved the fact that this record is only ten tracks long, which is the perfect length for a debut LP. It isn’t too long, which means it doesn’t get boring or old too quick.
Onyxred, and their debut release, The Calling, are definitely worth a portion of your time. Be sure to give them a listen. - Baltimoreathome.com - Local Music Scene
