The best way to get introduced to today's indieSolo band is to close your eyes, let the darkness settle in, listen to the song FOREVER LOST and see for yourself: "We composed this song in complete absence of light. It definitely gave a unique feeling to writing a song," October Sky says. This feeling translates well in this song. October Sky's music impresses with its resonant vocals and beautiful instrumentation. Their music is so colourful that it paints pictures of musical landscapes you'd be happy to get lost in.

This Canadian foursome, originally formed in the year 2000, hails from Saint-Hyacinthe in Quebec, and consists of Karl Raymond (lead vocals, guitar), Alexandre Racine (drums), Yanik Rouleau (keyboards, back vocals), and Andrew Walker (bass). Even though none of the band members had technical training, they've all been playing their instruments for eight to ten years now.

October Sky had their debut performance in Ontario last October, which was also their first show outside of Quebec, at Indie Week Toronto. The band left a deep impression with their new audience by bringing their mezmerizing soundscapes combined with an extraordinary stage presence to Toronto, and making it into the finals at Indie Week. If you have the fortunate chance of catching one of October Sky's shows, you'll see how close knit this band is and just how much they love to do what they do: It will be a show to remember. "The reaction from our fans and the energy in the atmosphere gives us an unbelievable feeling," October Sky says.

Even though the band members grew up speaking French, they decided to sing in English: "We were worried that the market for French singing artists was too limited, and we wanted to be able to share our music with a larger audience," October Sky says. The band composes their music collaboratively; the lyrics are mostly written by lead singer Karl, with participation from the other band members. Their lyrics are influenced by their personal experiences and social issues. The song SACRIFICE for example was written "with the intention of reminding people about the importance of unity and not stabbing your neighbour in the back."

In 2006, October Sky released their four-song self-titled EP. Their first radio release, HIT THE GROUND, enjoyed airplay on radio stations in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. The EP contains unique illustrations and graphic design. "Liam Thurston created the illustrations for the EP, and Taxi Agency made the graphic design. We wanted an image that simultaneously conveyed the beauty and hideousness of the world," October Sky explains.

Last year, the band "moved to Toronto with the intention of increasing our fan base and making new contacts. We feel that we've accomplished that, and we moved back to Montreal to pursue projects with our team, which is mostly Montreal based," October Sky says. There is lots to look forward to. In five years October Sky wants to be "wherever the wind takes us, as long as it's on a stage!"

Mel: Who are your influences?

October Sky: Each band member has their own influences that cover a wide spectrum of styles. To name a few of the bands that influences us: Coldplay, U2, Linkin Park, Audioslave, Incubus and Muse. Also, some hints of techno, classical, blues and jazz are apparent in our music.

Mel: What does it mean to you to be an indie artist?

October Sky: In terms of control over the musical creativity and the general direction the band is headed towards, being an indie artist allows for the band's vision to be better achieved. However, the workload is much higher.

Mel: Which opportunities do you see with indieSolo?

October Sky: indieSolo offers great visibility and exposure for indie bands.

Mel: What would you like to achieve with your music?

October Sky: To be more popular than the Beatles and U2 combined. (laugh) On a serious note, our dream is to make a living by doing our passion, which is obviously making music.

Mel: Which artist would you like to record a song with and why?

October Sky: It would be a great privilege to be able to record a song with Sarah McLaughlan, who is an incredible artist we admire.

Mel: What can fans expect from your upcoming album and when is it coming out?

October Sky: Fans can expect to have their heads blown off by high voltage rock ‘n roll, as well as our heart pumping drum beats, head spinning piano riffs, groovy bass lines and refreshing guitar licks. We expect to release our next album within the next year, providing everything proceeds as planned.

The show began less like a gig and more like a performance. Powerful organ music vibrated through the chests of the crowd, generating a sense of anticipation. The band stood with their backs to the audience, aloof, until an explosion of cymbals triggered a uniformed front as they turned like soldiers preparing to do battle. A beat driven fusion of industrial and alternative rock hypnotically pumped from the stage at the world famous Lee’s Palace. Each song built ever higher to a climax of light and sound.

Having made a name for themselves in their native Montreal, October Sky has branched out, spreading their brand of rock to Ontario. Bouncing back and forth between Quebec and the GTA, they are on a grueling schedule that doesn’t give them much of a break.

The band is comprised of Karl, Lead singer/Guitar, Andrew on bass, Yanik on keyboards, and Alex on drums. They released their first EP in 2006 after spending nearly a year in the studio and have been touring in support of that record ever since. In 2007, October Sky, the hard working, hard rocking band that they are, plan to release a second EP and are currently planning a massive bash, on May 19, at the Medley in Montreal, that will make their first CD release party look like arts and crafts time at a senior citizens home.

October Sky is a band on the rise and continues to expand their fan base with each show. They are gearing up for a cross Canada tour as well as several shows in the U.S. Keep your ear to the ground for October Sky. Expect them to be bursting through your speakers any time now.

I had the great pleasure of attending last night's Toronto Independent Music Awards and was especially thrilled to meet up with Jon Asher of Asher Media and the very talented Montreal band October Sky who Jon is representing. I had a chance to sit down with these guys who were nominated for Best Out Of Province Group and I had a candid conversation with them about the world of October Sky. These guys had a lot to talk about and being very computer dependant but armed with only a pen and pad I can only hope that I've captured as much of our conversation as accurately as possible, but regardless, I think you'll agree after reading my report that October Sky is one band you will want to keep your eyes and ears on as they head for stardom with their truly unique sound and hard work ethics.



According to front man Karl Raymond, things originally started out eight years ago when a few friends starting jamming together. By 2004 the jam group had evolved into a full fledged band with the current line-up. The band worked hard on their original material and eventually, after spending nearly one year in the studio, came up with their self-titled debut EP which was also self-produced. As drummer Alex Racine put it, they were left alone in a recording studio while the studio owner was away and it was up to them to "figure things out" and experiment on their own. For them, it was a truly invaluable learning experience which allowed them to develop and create their own sound while getting things exactly they way they had envisioned them. It was possibly this experience that put the idea in their minds, that in true Indie spirit, they could manage everything from producing their own recordings to handling stage production of their live shows all on their own.



The year spent in the studio was worth every minute. The release of their six-song EP was received very well by fans and industry alike and was soon selling at a very quick pace. Remarkably, the band also handled the nation-wide sales of their CD and merchandise as well. After obtaining a government grant, the band was able to put out their first video "Hit the Ground", which they submitted to Much Music's Montreal counterpart "Musique Plus" for their Much on Demand segment which counts down weekly the most requested videos. It was only when Musique Plus called them that they realized what an impact the video had made. Completely unaware and caught off guard, the band came to find out that their fans had been requesting the video even before it's release and that they were in the number 4 spot, beating out major acts such as Madonna. This prompted Musique Plus to invite the band into the studio for a live interview that was watched by thousands across the Province of Quebec. Keyboardist Yanick Rouleau explained that the results were hugely positive in ways that were unimaginable to them. One great positive result was seeing their Myspace hits jump from 300 a day to over 1000. The guys couldn't express enough to me the gratitude they have towards their fans in this achievement and for allowing them the opportunity to share their music with them.



With Asher Media on their side, the band moved quickly on to tackling radio. Following a serious campaign, the band eventually landed themselves airplay not only on ichannel and community and college FM stations, but also on some major FM's in Canada and parts of the U.S. The band has always viewed radio as a valuable tool that can be used to promote their music. However, they strongly insist that it's the live shows that truly capture the fans and it's where the revenues come from to allow them the funding to persevere forward.



Fast forward to 2008 and their soon to be released full-length album "Hell Isn't My Home": By the time they were set to head back into the studio the band was drawing huge crowds in their hometown of Montreal and was getting the nod from fans in Toronto after spending nearly two years there in what Karl calls a "very established and supportive Indie scene". It was also here in Toronto that they found their Media Relations partner Asher Media, headed up by Jon Asher, who according to bassist Andrew Walker is the hardest working guy they've ever met. Back in the studio, the band began to draw from influences such as U2 and Lincoln Park. Although not sounding anything like these bands, it was the work ethic and originality of these bands that really inspired October Sky during their song-writing for the new album. I asked about the meaning behind the album title. It was drummer Alex Racine that explained that the band always wants to remain positive about everything around them and that the title is about the good and bad in all of us and about the triumph of good over evil. While October Sky didn't end up winning the Best Out of Province Award at the 2008 Toronto Independent Music Awards , the fact that they were recognized outside of Quebec's predominantly French music community, is certainly something to be proud of.

October Sky's version of rock is a unique mix of genre influences coupled with a rare appeal that transcends generations and musical tastes. You don't necessarily have to enjoy rock music to appreciate the nice arrangement of sounds that this four-piece band from Montreal has concocted.

Andrew Walker, who plays bass for the band recounts how this band formed, "Karl (vocals) and Alex (drums) went to high school together. They eventually met Yannik (keyboards), and got a little more serious about making music. They won a few contests, and that's when they started taking it a little more seriously. That was when a passion turned into a project. I met the band about a year and a half ago, and then we started to get really serious, working full time on the band."

Initially formed in 2000, as per the story above, the band has experienced numerous successes in Quebec, having been featured on Musiqueplus (the Quebec version of MuchMusic), and having released their debut EP to a crowd of over 500 people.

Now, as the band seeks out success in the rest of Canada with their first full-length album, Hell Isn't My Home, they are faced with a whole new set of challenges.

"The music scene in Toronto is very different for indie artists than in Montreal," says Andrew, "...The Montreal music scene is very French. There's a lot of focus on French artists on radio and TV. We have a great music scene in Montreal, there's a lot of venues, but already you're really limited as an indie band because less than half of the music is in English. It's different in Toronto because indie bands are flourishing more there."

As of now, it is difficult for October Sky to gauge exactly what the reaction is to their music outside of Quebec, but they will get a pretty good idea after their cross-Canada tour which begins in October. "We feel good about [our success] though. The ball's really rolling, we're pushing hard, we're working hard.

The latest album, Hell Isn't My Home (to be released in September), while open to thematic interpretation, was inspired by a central concept. "Lyrically the main theme of the album is the good and the bad in the world, and that no matter what happens, there's always some beauty in the world and good things to appreciate."

The cross-genre, "rock fusion" feel of the album could be attributed to the variety of influences proclaimed by the band. "Bands that we've all been influenced by are Coldplay, U2, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine. Karl and Alex are really into the hard rock, and Yannik listens to a lot of movie scores, some classical and techno. There's a weird mix of influences, and we bring them all to the table. If you listen carefully you can hear each influence."


Making music, as you might already know, isn't all work. And the best things about making music for Andrew are playing live and writing/recording, "Playing for people is the best thing, especially when people enjoy it. When people take in the energy you give out and then send it back to you, it's just the best feeling. Creating music with your fellow musicians as a group is awesome as well."

"We hope that we're offering a somewhat unique style of music. We feel, based on the response that we've had, that the music that we lplay doesn't target a specific demographic. We find that someone who's a six year old kid can love our music, and someone who's sixty or seventy can enjoy it just as much. Everyone can take something different from our music."

On September 27th, October Sky is playing a huge self produced show in Montreal, that they are all very excited about, "It's gonna have TVs, projectors, live camera shots, strobe lights....It's going to be a huge, huge show." And that sure sounds awesome!

Canada gets a hard rap. The United States gets the credit for having more interesting movies, heroes and presidential debates. This is unfortunate, seeing as Canada does have a rich indie music scene, bursting with things to say to the world, though we have yet to find a lot of people to put us on the map.

October Sky fits the bill. Hailing from the Montreal area, the indie rockers were started in 2000 by Alexandre Racine and Karl Raymond, the drummer and lead vocalist/guitar player respectively. Two years later they picked up Andrew Walker to play bass, and in 2004, they picked up Yanik Rouleau to play keyboard. This marked the final step in the completion of the band and what they consider to be successful components to their sound and their name.

"Its kind of funny, because three of us were born in October," explains Walker. "And our little joke here is that my last name is Walker and I'm the one that wasn't born in October, so it's like, Skywalker. It's our Star Wars reference. It's kind of goofy, but it's our little gag."

The group success has been anything but a gag. In 2005, the band got its first big break, after winning a series of contests. Though having just set out on their first cross-Canada tour, before now the four piece ensemble has been the subject of much attention through the music scene in the east and with good reason. Their debut video, "Hit the Ground," beat out Madonna on the Musique Plus Countdown (the Quebec version of Much Music). They've begun to climb the charts on Much Music and were nominated for the Best Out Of Province Award at the 2008 Toronto Independent Music Awards. Though the band achieved a lot of conventional success, they draw influence from some of the most unconventional directions.

"Yanik [Rouleau], our keyboard player has more of a classical and techno and movie score kind of influence. Andrew says "Alex and Karl, the drummer and guitar player, respectively, they both have like, a hard rock and alternative influence and myself, I have more of a blues and jazz with rock. It's like a mix of different styles that kind of blend well together. Like, we each bring our own element to the band and it creates for a good mix."

Their debut full length album, Hell Isn't My Home, put the group's production muscles to use when they recorded it themselves.

"We won a big contest and the prize was a lot of studio time", says Walker. "The two guys that were working at the studio showed us the ropes and gave us the keys, so we just played around a lot and spent a lot of time there. We learned through trial and error and that's how we were able to do Hell Isn't My Home, all on our own. That's the only way to do it is by just playing around with it and learning for yourself."

Since winning the studio time, music has begun to take up a lot of the boys' time, which has resulted in some realizations.

"Our lives have begun to revolve around music," Walker says. "We're seeing it more than ever on tour. We're away from our family and friends, but it just kind of makes us realize how much we love doing this and how sure we are that this is what we want to do." - Gauntlet Newsweekly

October Sky's hard work and determination have made the impossible seem possible. I had a chance to sit down with bassist Andrew Walker prior to their official CD launch for Hell Isn't My Home in Toronto.

ANDREW WALKER: Hellooo

TP: October Sky was formed in 2000, how did all the band members meet?

AW: Well, it started with Alex (Racine) and Karl (Raymond), the drummer and the singer. They went to high school together and started jamming just for fun, They had a little band and were jamming all the time and it got to the point where they were spending so much time playing music, they decided they'd try and do it as a career. Maybe not as a career, but push it a little farther and see what they could do with it. They did a couple of contests, like a battle of the bands type thing, pretty big contest. One of them had 85 bands and the other had 45 bands and they won both of them. And that's really where they started thinking, "Maybe we should do something with this." You know, pursue it a little bit and they moved to Toronto last year, I say "they", because I wasn't with the band at the time. Yanik (Rouleau) joined the band in 2004, and bringing keyboards into the band, really changed the music a lot. They came to Toronto last year, no two years ago, in the fall of 2006, so they moved here to explore the Indie scene and learn a bit more about the music industry and especially Toronto, because the Toronto music scene is huge and it thrives here. So that's the place to be if you're going to be an Indie band. It's a little harder in Montreal for Indie artists because there's a lot of attention on French music first of all, and so already that cuts down your chances being an English band. The Indie scene is different there, so they came here to test the waters and stuff, try to build a new fan base, because they already had started building a good fan base in Montreal. And when they came back, well how I met the band was, they ended up renting out my dad's house. I was still living in Montreal and my dad was living in Toronto and so they randomly just rented my dad's house.

TP: Get out, are you serious?

AW: Yeah, so I inevitably joined the band after that.

TP: So how did you come to meet them, did you go over and hang out with them?

AW: No, no, I was still in Montreal, I was going to school...

TP: So how did you hook up with them then?

AW: Because they ended up changing their bassist. They were having some trouble, so um...

TP: But you already knew them in Montreal?

AW: No I didn't actually.

TP: You didn't even know of them?

AW: I didn't know them at all!! The only reason I know them, was they were guys renting my dad's house, I'd never met them, I didn't know anything about them, I just knew they were a band.

TP: So now they're looking for a new bassist...

AW: Yeah, they came back to Montreal to start working on an album and stuff, and they were looking for a new bassist, and my dad was like, "Hey, my son's a bassist."

TP: Get out! That's so funny!!

AW: Yeah it was pretty cool.

TP: Yeah that is pretty cool! And you've been with the band for how long now?

AW: About a year and 9 months.

TP: So who are the band’s musical influences? I'm sure it varies.

AW: That's a good question, but it's going to be a long answer because we each have our own influences, which is maybe why we have a fairly unique style of music.

TP: Very diverse.

AW: Yeah, and I think if you listen, you can hear each of the styles I'm going to mention. Karl and Alex, the singer and the drummer both have a hard rock influence, with bands like Thrice, obviously Rage Against The Mach - Crusher Magazine

Montreal-based alternative/progressive band October Sky makes their debut with Hell Isn’t My Home – an album that’s already garnering vast attention despite its recent release.

The CD is unique in its packaging, with ten songs offered on the main disc, and a second disc featuring three bonus tracks. But, more interesting than its presentation is the song crafting within, all of which is a collaborative effort from Karl Raymond (guitar/vocals), Andrew Walker (bass), Alex Racine (drums) and Yanik Rouleau (keyboards).

The CD opens with “The Darkest Light”, initially featuring electronica reminiscent of something from Star Wars’ R2D2. Haunting background vocals are added as the track gains memento and then morphs into something similar to Coldplay or early U2. As a matter of fact, several tracks display a UK rock style and tap not only the musical arrangement of U2, but also the vocal styling of Bono. Sure enough, the title track of “Hell Isn’t My Home”, which appears as the third song on the album, is comparable to “In the Name of Love”, particularly in its chorus.

“Hit the Ground”, positioned as track six on the CD, is currently receiving plenty of play as well as kudos in its video format, especially on Much Music’s counterpart Musique Plus.

“Interlude” is exactly that – an interval between song six and eight at only one minute and twenty-three seconds. Nevertheless, it makes the most of it’s time with some lilting keyboards and a violin lift, that eventually gives way to funky guitar and launches “Into Their Memories”.

Although a few of the songs blend together a tad too easily, giving the feeling of a lack of variation, overall this CD should appeal to a wide audience, as it nicely combines familiarity with a new and exciting edge. - FAZER Magazine

OCTOBER SKY OPENS FOR ALEXISONFIRE AND WINS
“BEST NEW BAND IN CANADA”

OCTOBER SKY wins the Global Battle of Bands Canadian National Finals in Quebec City on Saturday, September 12th, 2009. The band shared the stage with Multi-Platinum Canadian artists Alexisonfire and California’s punk rock revivals Bad Religion after beating out 60 bands in Canada for the title of “Best New Band”. October Sky will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to the World Finals in London UK, December ’09.

October Sky stands to win a development package worth over $100,000 USD including a week of recording time, a 10 date United Kingdom tour and $10,000 USD in cash.
