"Interview: NJ Taylor releases acoustic EP, receives 2016 HMMA nomination for ‘Pop Army’"

NJ Taylor has a crackle of charisma that makes her the center of attention in any situation. When she steps into a room, it is impossible not to be dazzled by her shimmering aura, that extra special something that defines her as a pop star. Last year, the Montreal artist released her self-titled debut EP, a critically acclaimed pop gem featuring five infectious tracks: "Pop Army," "Radar," "So You," "Right Here," and "Little Girl." "The first single, "Pop Army," was such a power-packed hit that it earned her a nomination in the "Dance" category of the upcoming 2016 Hollywood Music In Media Awards, which will be held Thursday, November 17 at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood. Just last month, NJ released an acoustic version of her self-titled debut. And, this Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m. EDT, the artist will be performing live on StageIt. Immediately after the show, she will host a Q&A.

NJ is a self-made star who has worked hard for each and every advance in her impressive career. Her remarkable achievements are a result of a strong belief in herself and an inspiring ability to rise above any challenge.

"Everything out there is out there because someone believed in it first, whatever it may be," NJ told AXS in a recent interview. "Whether it's a cup of coffee or a singer, if someone believes in it enough, the public will believe in it, as well."

"It can be hard," she continued. "There are times when I just don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. I don't know what I'm going to be doing next. But then something great happens, and that sustains me for a little while and that's what helps me to push again. Like I said, it can be difficult, but if you don't truly believe in yourself, then nobody else will."

NJ is a young woman who is filled with confidence. She hums with an inner beauty and exhibits a striking head-turning style — her grandmother was a fashion designer, so a dynamic flair is just something that's in her blood. Today, she is someone others look to for inspiration and strength. But that wasn't always the case.

"I got bullied all my life," she revealed. "From grammar school through high school. Because of that, I started keeping a lot to myself, just keeping everything inside, and not being who I was. When people tell you that you're stupid, you're ugly, and you can't do anything, it really does affect you — it affected me tremendously. Actually, that's what my song, 'Little Girl,' is about, it's my personal story. After high school, I realized that I had to break out and try to find who I was. I decided that I was going to prove to everybody that I can do this, that I can make it."

The inner strength that allowed NJ to triumph over her school years and take her destiny into her own hands likely came from her mother. From a young age, she was taught to be independent, to rely on herself, and if she wanted to do something... just do it. "I guess that stuck with me," NJ realized. "And I can't lie, I'm still a work in progress, it really did destroy me, but I was able to turn it around."

NJ learned how to take what was going on inside of her and express all of those thoughts and emotions as well-crafted lyrics. She created infectious, upbeat songs that were not only deeply personal and meaningful to herself, but also contained powerful messages that resonated with others, as well. For instance, from its title, "Pop Army," might sound like a synth-driven dance track with little more than a catchy vocal hook. But that's hardly the case. In the lyrics, NJ analyzes the culture and importance of pop music in our society. There's always a bit more going on in her music than you might expect in a typical pop song.

"I appreciate you saying that because that means a lot to me," she responded. "'Pop Army' is not your next bubblegum pop song, the lyrics really mean something... if you pay attention. Both myself and my co-writer felt the same about this song, we had the same major influences — Michael Jackson, Madonna, Abba — and we wanted to pay homage to music in general. Whether you love pop or rock, I think music does define a society and the nation. When you have a great song, it will live for generations. Music is what brings a society together, whatever may happen in this world, music will always be what gets us back together. That's what we wanted to explore in that track."

Offering intimate arrangements of her songs that facilitate the listener being able to really pay attention to her words is one of the reasons the recently released acoustic EP is so important to her. NJ Taylor Acoustic presents the artist in an up close and personal setting. It shines a new and softer light on her music.

"We went back into the studio and rerecorded everything," NJ informed. "It's a whole new EP. The vocal production is different, even the singing is different. On the pop version, there's not as much vibrato and there are less sustained notes, but for the acoustic version, I wanted to show a little more of my voice. It really is a completely different record."

As noted previously, you can see this much more intimate facet of NJ live this Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m. EDT on StageIt. She will be performing all the songs from her new acoustic EP along with a special surprise, a brand new version of a single she released a few years ago.

"What I like about StageIt is that it's not recorded," NJ explained. "It's a one time deal, you live the moment. Nowadays, a lot of people just live for tomorrow, they say 'I don't have to watch that today, I can check it out tomorrow.' When you do that, you're losing that special moment."

In closing, AXS asked, "What is something you want people to know about you? What's next?"

"I was never really influenced by the Canadian Pop sound," she replied. "I have always been inspired by more of an international sound. People recognize that and I've been told it's what makes me stand out. So I've been collaborating with Los Angeles-based songwriter Adien Lewis. My EP was co-produced by Ghislain "Gee" Brind’Amour [Rihanna, Karl Wolf], who also mixed and recorded it, and it was mastered by Gene Grimaldi [Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj]. Coming up, I'm going to be making a bigger push in the states because 'If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.'"

And based on her track record, we're confident she will. NJ Taylor Acoustic is currently available on iTunes. Her StageIt show is Saturday, November 5 at 2 p.m. EDT. Tickets available here. [Pay whatever you can, the minimum is just 10 cents!] And, her single, "Pop Army," has been nominated in the "Dance" category of the upcoming 2016 Hollywood Music In Media Awards (Thursday, November 17 at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood). - AXS

"Music Review - NJ Taylor"

The pop music genre is notorious for music that has bland and uninspired lyrics that are combined with an upbeat tempo designed to mask the unoriginality of the music. Pop artists Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande have broken away from this curse, creating music that is both original, fun, and catchy. Montreal singer-songwriter NJ Taylor should be counted among such pop legends because of her inspiring lyrics, invigorating beats, and fantastic electronic accompaniment.

Released October 9th last year, NJ Taylor’s self-titled debut EP features five fantastic tracks. As a child NJ played the violin for many years. While in high school, she traded the violin for singing and songwriting. After university, where she studied Italian and Spanish, NJ decided that creating music was her passion and embarked on a music career. Inspired by various world issues and guided by pop music like that of ABBA and Michael Jackson, NJ collaborated with Adien Lewis, who wrote the song "Radar" on the EP, and together they created five amazing songs.

The first track "Pop Army" is dramatic and upbeat, and the tempo will catch your attention almost immediately. Listen closely to the lyrics and you can hear NJ sing of her passion about pop music, and through her lyrics she invites listeners to share her love of the genre. Having "Pop Army" as the first track on her EP is a brilliant way to engage listeners who may or may not be as devoted to the pop genre as she is. In fact, although I rarely enjoy pop music, I found myself moving to the rhythm and singing along. Apparently NJ’s passion for this style of music is contagious!

"Radar" is the second track and is slightly more dramatic than the previous song. The tempo is somewhat less upbeat, but the electronic effects and striking piano and string accompaniment make this song a treat to the ears. NJ demonstrates that she isn’t bound to working only with electronic effects, and she is willing to experiment with her music and push the boundaries of the genre.

"Right Here" is my favourite song on this album. It reminds me of the songs from Madonna’s album Ray of Light from 1998. The electronic effects are layered in such a way that the music is almost organic, rising and falling with the mood and emotion of the lyrics. The tempo is fairly slow and steady, but it isn’t boring. The lyrics command the attention of the listener, and the inspirational message is perfect for those days when you find yourself feeling lost and alone. The feeling that emanates from this song is as complex as the sound, but somehow NJ is able to touch into the very heart of the listener and give them the comfort they may need in difficult times.

So if you are in need of pop music that will not only get you moving but inspire you when you need it the most then check out NJ’s debut EP. - The Voice Magazine

"NJ Taylor exclusive guest blog - 'Pop Army'"

Just a few months ago, I was an unknown artist in the UK. Today, I'm getting my little army ready for the release of my second single in the UK! How thrilling!

My new upbeat pop/dance track is an homage to pop music and all the great pop figures. I wrote it with my co-writer, Los Angeles-based Adien Lewis.

The song all started with the title, 'Pop Army'. I have a list with a bunch of title ideas. I absolutely loved this one and I knew I just had to write that song. I brought it up to Adien and he loved the idea. We would write a song as an homage to all the big pop figures that led to what pop is today.

For the melody of the verses, my initial inspiration was 'Gimme Gimme' by ABBA, and the initial inspiration for the chorus was Michael Jackson. As for the production, I was really inspired by Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.

The single was co-produced with Ghislain 'Gee' Brind'Amour (Rihanna, Karl Wolf, Victoria Duffield), arranged by Shahe Sinanoglu (Karl Wolf) and mastered by Gene Grimaldi (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Carly Rae Jepsen, Nicki Minaj).

I went to a songwriting workshop given by the multi-platinum award-winning producer/songwriter Rob Wells (Justin Bieber, Backstreet Boys). He critiqued the demo of 'Pop Army' and he had the best comments. He compared it to Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation'. He gave me clues as to how and make the song better, which we applied, and that's what you hear today.

The music video, directed by NOMAD Industries, draws from elements of Lady Gaga, Madonna and Michael Jackson in terms of dance, costumes and concept. The video was a full day shoot. I had a total of five outfit changes. The outfits were really outrageous; the very last one was a suit made of mirrors. It was a great day that led to an amazing video.

I wanted to write a song to thank all the great pop figures for their music. It was an homage to all great influencers: ABBA, Michael Jackson, Madonna, David Bowie, Prince, etc., and each one of these singers, bands and artists that preceeded one another, all taught each other something. That's the beauty of it: each one teach as the proverb goes.

The song talks about how music, in this case pop, is a reflection of a generation and society. All great music never dies; it will always be around until there is someone that relates to it. A song has no boundaries between generations. Music is a reflection of one's journey and of an entire society's era. Each song that you hear for the first time on the radio might just be about to make history. It could be the next song that plays at your graduation. And every time you will hear that same song, it will remind you of that moment in time, your graduation. Music shapes the soundtrack of your life. Music is really powerful. It evokes feelings, memories and triggers images. Music brings people together from all four corners of the world. Just one song, one rhythm, one beat can bring people together.

My last single 'So You', which racked up 130,000 collective views on YouTube for its lyric and music videos, was placed in numerous songwriting competitions and received airplay all over the UK, but 'Pop Army' is the biggie. 'Pop Army' is the perfect follow-up single. It even made the semi-finals of the UK Songwriting Contest 2015 in three different categories.

The new single's from my self-titled debut EP. The track has been remixed by top charting UK DJ Cutmore, and also by the well-known Mexican DJ J Zuart, which will be out this spring along with an acoustic version.

'This is a reflection of our generations/Hypnotic beats get us lost in the rhyme/It will never let you down/It will always be around/Come join the pop army', you can hear me singing in the song.

Pop music might be popular, trendy and catchy but it really does shape a society. Music makes you escape reality. It makes you think, it makes you dream. All this above is what I wanted to embody in 'Pop Arm'y.

You can say that with this single, my intent is to increase my pop army - so come join my pop army! - Female First

"A Montreal pop star: NJ Taylor"

Montreal pop star and Concordia alumna, NJ Taylor, is hitting up radio charts and taking on the pop music scene with her upbeat dance hits. She just released an acoustic version of her 2015 self-titled EP album on Oct 21.Her track “Pop Army” held a spot on the UK’s Music Week Commercial Pop Club Chart Top 30 for two weeks, starting at #17 and climbing to #13. She was a nominee for the International Music and Entertainment Association (IMEA) as pop artist of the year, pop album of the year and pop song of the year with her hit track “Pop Army”—which is also currently nominated for the Hollywood Music in Media Award.

Taylor grew up in the West Island part of a musical family. “My mother was a pianist. She was my biggest inspiration growing up,” Taylor said. “Music was always playing at my house. My brother also played the piano.” At the age of four, Taylor enrolled in violin lessons at Montreal’s renowned school of music, Vincent-d’Indy. “Classical music was the first genre that I played. I played violin for nine years,” said Taylor. Growing up, she knew music was her destiny. “I always knew I was an artist. It was just a matter of making the decision for real,” she said.

Taylor graduated from Concordia with a major in Italian and a minor in Spanish. She said it was difficult for her to put her music dreams on hold and study something other than music. “My plan B became plan A,” she said. “Once I left music behind, I didn’t think it was feasible to leave it and come back.” Taylor said, however, that what she learned at Concordia has helped her a lot in her music career. “If I didn’t have a degree, I wouldn’t have these aptitudes, like learning to be organized,” she said. “You need that for any business and that’s not something you can learn on the streets.”

Her ambition and determination have proven that, while talent is important, making it in the pop music industry mostly requires a lot of hard work. “It’s a business that, if you don’t do it 24/7 and don’t dedicate all your time to it, it’s really hard to stand out,” said Taylor. When she decided to return to music after her studies, she put herself out there, networking within and outside of Montreal. “You need to build relationships that could lead to a collaboration,” she said.

It was a long process for Taylor to release her first EP album, but she wanted to make sure she could compete with major pop artists. She said her aim is to make it on the radio, since it will expand her fan base and increase her opportunities to perform live. However, to be on the radio, you need to think like big labels do, she said. “That’s why the process was so long because I was concentrating on the visuals, the artist development and on the website,” she explained. “It’s not just the music, there is so much more around it.” The effort seems to have been worth it, with NJ Taylor getting airtime on Canadian radio stations and having Music Plus premiere her “Pop Army” music video.

The newly-released acoustic version of her EP was inspired by Justin Bieber’s release of an acoustic version of his entire hit album, Believe.“Myself and my engineer, we got really inspired by that,” Taylor said. “It allows me to show my fans a different facet of who I am and what I do.” She said her acoustic album allowed her to reach out to a different audience, and it opened the door for her to perform at different venues.

For this acoustic album, Taylor teamed up with guitarist Pierre-Luc Rioux, who has had sessions with Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Rihanna, and is working closely with David Guetta. Taylor said she was honoured to work with Rioux. As for the creative process of songwriting, Taylor worked with her co-writer, Adien Lewis, who is based in Los Angeles, and her co-producer Ghislain Brind’Amour, who has also worked with Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj. While her songs are pop and dance-based, the lyrics have great depth. In her track “Little Girl,” Taylor voices her struggles with being bullied while growing up. “When you go through a horrible time in your life, it becomes part of who you are,” she said. “I want to go to schools and talk about this. I think this song can show people that I went through this and that I am okay now.”

Taylor said she is greatly inspired by 90s pop music and artists and songwriters such as Michael Jackson, Max Martin and Taylor Swift. “Max Martin is the greatest pop producer of our time. He is a god of pop music,” she said.

As part of the launch of her acoustic EP, NJ Taylor will be giving a free live show on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 8 p.m. at the Chapters bookstore in Pointe-Claire. She will also be having a pay-what-you-can show online on Saturday, Nov. 5 on www.stageit.com/NJ at 2 p.m. - The Concordia

"NEW MUSIC: NJ Taylor ‘Pop Army’"

Montreal pop artist NJ Taylor is set to release the acoustic version of her self-titled debut EP on October 21, 2016. Collaborating with Los Angeles based songwriter Adien Lewis, the EP was co-produced with Ghislain “Gee” Brind’Amour (Rihanna, Karl Wolf) who also mixed and recorded it and mastered byGene Grimaldi (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj).

Originally inspired by Justin Bieber releasing an acoustic version of his Believe album, NJ wanted to share another side of herself and these songs. “Having acoustic versions gives a new life and a new meaning to the songs,” she explains, if someone isn’t into Pop/RnB commercial music, then they may be drawn to the acoustic versions. Canada is also a very difficult market for Pop music and now having acoustic versions allows me to play at more venues and opens me to many more opportunities.”

"NJ Taylor exclusive guest blog - Bullying and writing about 'the difficult years of being a teen'"

Bullying is a topic really close to my heart. I was actually bullied my entire childhood. I never really liked talking about it. As a matter of fact, until this day I hate talking about it. I don't know why but it makes me feel uncomfortable and it brings back a lot of bad memories. I'm a very private person but if my story can help others, then it's all worth it getting emotionally naked for the cause.

I actually wrote a song on my debut EP about bullying and going through the difficult years of being a teen; it's called "Little Girl". The song is about me talking to my teenage self. I was picturing myself talking to my 12-year-old self saying: "Don't worry; it's going to be okay." I'm sure a lot of people can relate to it. "Little Girl" is the most personal song on my EP and probably the most personal song I've ever written. I was really scared of people hearing it and of what they would think of it. I was afraid people would know my story. But then I realized that people would want to know what the song was about and that I would have to tell my story. I really hope that by doing so I can help others. If this song and my story can help just one person…then I will have achieved something great.

I've always been extremely sociable but I was always singled out. My first experience of being singled out I was probably in kindergarten. I never fitted in, or so I felt. The other kids often rejected me. This affected my self-esteem at a really young age. It made me hate school. And hating school made me not perform well in school. And I would then bring my problems back at home. It was a bad vicious circle. I would sometime come back home crying and my mom would try to console me by saying that the other kids were just jealous, but I really couldn't see that.

I will always remember this one traumatizing experience when I was in grade 6. Every Friday my teacher would have a discussion circle and every week we would talk about issues school related or class related. This one Friday, without any announcement or warning, my teacher decided to bring me up as the topic of the day. She asked the whole class why I was rejected. I was so shocked that she brought this up; I was paralyzed by her question. I just froze. Until one kid said: "Cause she's stupid and ugly". I wanted to disappear and become invisible. How can a teacher be so insensitive? It's truly lacking judgment and educational psychology.

I was so happy when elementary school came to an end. With the start of high school I was dreaming of a bright new beginning. But high school was not going to be any better. High school was actually worse. By my 2nd year of high school I was hanging out with the "cool" kids, I was part of the popular crew. But here's the thing, I was the loser of the popular crew, or so it felt many a time. My close girlfriends were great, but the guys in the crew were the problem. For a whole year I was petrified to go outside during lunch break. The guys would grab me by my arms and legs leaving me defenseless and they would try to throw me in pretty much anything: a puddle of water, mud, snow…until my girlfriends would come to my rescue.

Being bullied not only affected my spirit, my self-esteem but also my dating life. Most boys in the crew would make fun of me and would go along with the bullies by fear of being themselves singled out. There was this one boy in the group I had a crush on; I never thought he liked me but I found out later on that it was the opposite. One of the guys told him that if he would go out with me, he pretty much wouldn't be part of the gang anymore. Hence, my dating life was non-existent in high school.

It's funny how we all have a different perception of reality. To a lot of people I was a cool kid because they saw me hanging out with the popular kids. But my own reality was completely different. I was so miserable. My self-esteem was at its lowest and I was often depressed. When you're going through such a hard time you're just seeing darkness.

For years I truly believed that I was stupid and ugly. I couldn't take a compliment; whenever someone would compliment me I thought that it was an insensitive joke and it never occurred to me that it could actually be a genuine compliment. I was always looking at the ground and I wouldn't walk confidently with my back straight. I had to work really hard on myself in order to be who I am today.

Being bullied poisoned my life at a young age. If you would have told me then that things were going to be alright, that things were really going turn around for me, I never would have believed it. I wish that I can truly be an example and tell kids: "See how I was where you are? But look at me now". It's not only about saying but it's also about showing and I really hope to be a role model to all and anyone going through bullying or anything similar. - Female First

"Pop singer unveils new single for spring/summer with her EP release coming very soon"

Pop singer unveils new single for spring/summer with her EP release coming very soon.

Montreal singer/songwriter, NJ Taylor, embraces the bubble-gum world of female pop this spring/summer with the release of her up-tempo and highly addictive single, ‘Pop Army’ out on 6th May.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5-EEk6iUwg

The new single ‘Pop Army’ is from NJ’s self-titled debut EP. The track has also been remixed by top charting UK DJ Cutmore and also by well-known Mexican DJ J Zuart, which will be out in spring along with an acoustic version.

The upbeat pop/dance track, co-written with Los Angeles based Adien Lewis, is an homage to all the pop greats, especially Michael Jackson, Madonna and ABBA, NJ’s biggest inspirations. The video, directed by NOMAD, draws from elements of Lady Gaga, Madonna and MJ in terms of dance, costume and concept, NJ says.

"NJ Taylor talks about Pop Army"

NJ Taylor talks about Pop Army

Excitingly we at Press Party have managed to secure an exclusive interview with Montreal's own Pop Patriot NJ Taylor.

1. Let's tell our readers more about you and your music, Is 'Pop Army' your debut UK single?

Actually “Pop Army” isn’t my debut single. My debut single is “I Don’t Care” which was released in 2013 but it wasn’t pushed in the UK. My first single that was released in the UK is “So You” which is the first single off my debut EP.

2. What was your main inspiration when writing the track?

I wanted to write this song as an homage to pop music and all the big influential pop figures: ABBA, Michael Jackson, Madonna, David Bowie, Prince, etc. My inspiration was music and how music is a reflection of a society, a nation and how it impacts all generations. Music is so powerful, it makes you think, it makes you feel and that’s what I wanted to explore in “Pop Army”.

3. How do you want 'Pop Army' to make the listener feel?

I just want people to feel like dancing and having a good time. It’s a fun song. Just get up and dance!

4. Where did you film the video and what inspired the idea behind it?

The video was shot at NOMAD Industries in Montreal, Canada. The production team was inspired to create the video around the actual inspiration I had for writing the song. In terms of dance, costumes and concept I would say the inspiration was mainly drawn from Madonna, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga. I wanted a video that would be glittery. My original idea was to have two rows of people dressed in black with white glittery army helmets marching like an army. The team took my inspiration and instead they duplicated me in the video, which is a very cool effect.

5. Finally where is your dream venue to perform this track?

Wow that’s a great question! I don’t have a dream venue to perform this song. My dream is just to be able to perform it as at many venues and events as possible.

"Singer-songwriter NJ Taylor To Release New Single 'Pop Army' on May 6th"

Pop singer unveils new single for spring/summer with her EP release coming very soon.

Montreal singer/songwriter, NJ Taylor, embraces the bubble-gum world of female pop this spring/summer with the release of her up-tempo and highly addictive single, ‘Pop Army’ out on 6th May. With female pop artists absolutely dominating the charts in 2015, NJ Taylor plans to keep the party going in 2016 with her release of ‘Pop Army’ as well as urging others to join her in her pop crusade.

‘This is a reflection of our generations/Hypnotic beats get us lost in the rhyme….It will never let you down/It will always be around….Come join the pop army.’ She sings.

‘The song started with the title, Pop Army’ says NJ. ‘I always thought it sounded really cool and wanted to write a song called that. I spoke with my cowriter, Adien, about the idea and he was on the same page. We would write a song as an homage to all the big pop figures that led to what pop is today – Michael Jackson, Madonna….ABBA.’

‘We were extremely inspired by those three main artists, so we wanted to have a song that brought a little bit of that funkiness. At the same time, I was really inspired by Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.’

At a workshop in Toronto, songwriter Rob Wells (Justin Bieber, Backstreet Boys) critiqued the demo. ‘He had the best comments; he compared it to Janet Jackson’s ‘Rhythm Nation’. He gave me clues how to make the song better, which we applied and that’s what you hear today.’ NJ says. - Press Party

"NJ Taylor exclusive guest blog - Anti-bullying Week"

If this song and my story can help just one person... then I will have achieved something great.

2. Is there a story behind “So You”? I pretty much got inspired to write it from past relationships I’ve been in and also stories I would hear from people around me, friends, etc. It’s that kind of story that everyone has at least experienced once so most people can relate to it.

"NJ Taylor exclusive music video premiere - 'Pop Army'"

Montreal singer/songwriter NJ Taylor returns today with a special music video exclusive for Female First readers, ahead of the release of her new EP later this year.

Embracing the world of bubblegum pop, 'Pop Army' will officially be released on May 6, but we've got the gorgeous visuals here to share with you all today.

NJ says of the track: "The song started with the title, 'Pop Army'. I always thought it sounded really cool and wanted to write a song called that.

"I spoke with my co-writer, Adien, about the idea and he was on the same page. We would write a song as an homage to all the big pop figures that led to what pop is today - Michael Jackson, Madonna, ABBA.

"We were extremely inspired by those three main artists, so we wanted to have a song that brought a little bit of that funkiness. At the same time, I was really inspired by Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga."

Songwriter Rob Wells, who has worked with the likes of Justin Bieber and the Backstreet Boys also gave NJ some pearls of wisdom.

At a workshop in Toronto he critiqued the demo, and NJ recalls: "He had the best comments. He compared it to Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation'. He gave me clues how to make the song better, which we applied and that's what you hear today." - Female First

"Canadian Pop Sensation NJ Taylor's Exclusive Guest Blog - The Canadian Music Scene"

As a Canadian musician, I'm all about supporting my fellow Canadian artists, and since the music scene here is so strong, it's an easy task.

Two words: Alanis Morissette. The alt rock singer is practically a queen in Canada. Her beautiful voice and wonderful melodies have gained her worldwide fame, a lot of loyal, devoted fans, and won her many awards. And on top of her being so flawless, she acts as well. All hail queen Alanis.

But it's not just bold beauties like Alanis that are a product of Canada; we have an eclectic selection of talented musicians. From soulful Michael Bublé, to pop rock princess Avril Lavigne.

It's impossible to grow up in Canada and not hear the name Shania Twain at least 20 times. The magnificent Ontario singer has sold over 85 million records, and is one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. She is also the best selling female artist in the history of country music. She is literally the queen of Country pop.

Shania however, isn't the only one who made music history. The Canadian pop singer and entrepreneur Celine Dion is also regarded in high esteem. She became famous in 1980s by winning both the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest. After signing with Epic Records and releasing several French and English albums, she became one of the most successful artists in pop music history. Also, her song 'Alone' is just pure gold!

But it's not only amazing, record breaking women coming out of Canada, we've also had a lot of incredible male solo artists like Neil Young and Leonard Cohen-who has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The man is a legend.

Some of the current big names in the Canadian music scene today are Drake, The Weeknd, Carly Rae Jepsen, Grimes and the Bieber fever-inducing Justin Bieber.

Did you know that Justin Bieber's song 'Baby' is the second most viewed YouTube video of all time? How insane! Justin has definitely come a long way from his days of busking on the streets of Ontario, and making YouTube videos. He is now one of the most beloved musicians in the world.

Rapper Drake has a similar story. Although he didn't make YouTube videos before he became a musician, he did act on the Canadian show 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' before releasing his mixtapes and signing to Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment in 2009.

Canada definitely has some bright talents in its music scene, and I'm just excited to be a part of it all. Maybe one day I'll make history and break a record or two. - Female First

"Dans l'intimité de... NJ Taylor"

Tu as des enfants ? Non et je te dirais « on verra »... (sourire)

"Music: So You by NJ Taylor – Montreal, QC"

Check out this great new song from Canadian Pop Artist NJ Taylor with her song ” So You”. Make sure to check below our interview with her about this song and her album.

Why did you select this song as your current single?

I selected “So You” to be my 2nd single because I felt it was a nice transition between my debut single “I Don’t Care”, which is an upbeat pop electronica song with some rock influences. “So You” also showcases my vocal capabilities a bit more and I felt that it was important for my fans to see that side of me prior to releasing my debut album.

How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?

Well, originally my idea was to write an album with a storyline, which would start from the relationship being rocky, to the breakup (“I Don’t Care”), then have the post breakup song (party anthem) and then have more inspirational songs. That was the original idea but in the end I will be releasing an EP and not an LP so I don’t know if this will still be reflected.

What was the writing process for the song?

I wrote “So You” few years ago and the song was even on my demo! I really loved the song and I got a lot of positive feedback so I then decided to rework it for my debut album. My co-writer, Adien Lewis, redid the melody for me. I then went in the studio with my arranger, Shahe Sinanoglu, and my co-producer, Ghislain “Gee” Brind’Amour and we completed the song!

What does this song’s lyric mean to you?

To me, “So You” is a representation of typical love relationships that are going south lol! I got inspired by my own past experiences, which I know are probably the reflection of many other people’s stories lol!

What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?

I have 2 different versions of this song. The original version is a full production so you would see me perform it with a full band. The other version of the song is acoustic so if you were to see me perform that version, it’s more of an intimate setting where it’s just me and a guitar player (perhaps even 2).

Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?

Absolutely not! This song is just a small part of who I am as an artist. This is just a little teaser of who I am as an artist, but my debut album will for sure summarize me better!

Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?

There isn’t an official music video for this single; we opted instead to create an official lyric video where I appear in. You can view it right here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AkwQx0A4mg

One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?

I’ve been extremely inspired to write songs that are profound and that have deeper meanings than just love songs. I’m fully aware that love songs evoke feelings or emotions we can all relate to. But I feel like most songs out there are all love songs. So that being said, I’ve been writing a lot of songs for my debut album that talk about topics such as bullying. I want to write music that can truly inspire people and touch them through hard times and good times! - iMove iLive

"NJ Taylor Pop/R&B singer/songwriter from Montreal, Canada"

NJ Taylor, Pop/R&B singer/songwriter from Montreal, Canada have released in May her 2nd single entitled “So You” which has been getting some airplay and is starting to get some attention. The song also made the semi-finals of Unsigned Only Music Competition in the Pop/Top 40 category. Here are few things that we tried to check with the Canadian Artist NJ Taylor.

How would you define your personality ?

I would define myself as a passionate girl with lots of ambitions. I’m very curious, I love to learn and I want to know as much as I can. My motto is “Live out of hope, not out of fear!” PS feel free to quote me ;)

Why do you think that you choose music should be your first choice of profession ?

Music is not what I do but it’s who I am!

If given a choice to work with any great musician of all time who would be right choice to match your style?

Ouh that’s a tough one! Can I name someone that’s not a musician? I would have to say I would LOVE to work with Dr. Luke & Max Martin. I admire both of them so much! I even got to meet Max Martin few months ago while I was in LA for ASCAP Expo.

What is the toughest part of creating a song or an entire album ?

The tough part is probably the budget! In order to create something of high quality it cost quite a bit and it’s hard to do so being an independent artist.

A few things about your new project , As an artists how satisfied are you with your new release ?

I released my 2nd single “So You” on May 20th. I’m very happy with the release. So far it has been getting airplay on radio stations in Quebec as well as Satellite radios and many online radios all over the world. The remix version of the song by Edson Pride has been picked up by many international DJs and is charting on Deejayworx. It even climbed up to #24 on the international chart of Deejayworx, charting with international acts such as Calvin Harris, Zedd, and David Guetta.

The lyric video for “So You” just aired on “Renman Live” this past Tuesday, July 8. For those who don’t know the show, Renman is the former manager of Incubus and he started his own online show called Renman Live. He also has this awesome website called RenmanMB.com which I strongly suggest for all those who want to be in the music industry. Also thanks to my new single “So You”, I am a semi-finalist in the Unsigned Only Music Competition in the Pop/Top 40 category.

I’m presently finishing the recording of my debut album. I’m recording the last single for the album on Tuesday, July 15 then all we will have left to do is some touch ups here and there and then it’s of to mixing and mastering! I will have more exciting news to share in a very near future.

These are few things that The Music Media team was informed by CarryonHarry Team .Some more things will be discussed with NJ Taylor who will be joining on Singapore Talk Show CarryonHarry next week. - Carry On Harry

Oui !

"NJ Taylor: “I Don’t Care”"

If NJ Taylor’s debut single and video are any indication of what is in store for this rising pop star, then she’s destined for the spotlight. Taylor wrote and co- produced the anthemic, “I Don’t Care,” an impactful, upbeat track that plunges boldly into the turbulence of a bad breakup. Reminiscent of the bite of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know,” Taylor has tapped into a rawness that makes her music a rallying point for anyone who has experienced the conflicting emotions involved with moving on.

The lyrics, “I prayed for you, but now I’m through with you,” reveal a woman compassionate enough to really care, but strong enough to walk away.

The concept of the video is tightly tied to the song’s lyrics. The 3-minute vignette portrays a self-assured woman delivering the sweetest revenge of all: going out and having a great time!

An important focal point of the story is Taylor’s dance skills. There is an elegance to her subtle moves that helps define her character. “I do have a background in dance,” the artist pointed out. “I took jazz and hip-hop classes for few years. I also have a background in acting. I studied professional theater at the Dome Theatre, which is one of the best acting programs in Montreal! Obviously, I’m biased,” she laughed. “But seriously, some well-known actors, such as Jay Baruchel [How To Train Your Dragon], came out of that school! Anyway, all this is to say that in theater, we also had ‘movement’ classes.”

Regarding the setting of the video, Taylor explained, “I always wanted a scene in the video to be held in a karaoke bar. Why? Simply because that specific scene was based on a true story that I lived! Obviously, the scene was modified from what truly happened, but I suggested that idea to the director, PeeZee, and he wrote the treatment around my idea.”

Another impressive aspect of “I Don’t Care” is the fact that NJ funded it herself. The Montreal-based artist confirmed, “Not only am I funding this myself, but I’m the executive producer of my entire project!!! At least for now, until I get signed by a label or find an investor!”

In closing, Taylor expressed, “I just want to make music that can speak to people and influence them. I hope that I can touch people through the good times and the bad times. If I can achieve that, than I will truly be blessed.” - Songwriter's Monthly

Favorite [press] quote about your music: “NJ Taylor is a shining example of allocating funds continuing to create music, especially as I truly believe they will be one of our country’s buzz artists in the coming releases. Her new work is another step in what I know will be another important, beautiful and remarkable piece of music we can all get behind in this country – not because it came from her, but because we know it came from one of our country’s finest musical performers.
