Influenced by the Middle Eastern sounds of her Syrian roots and the intimate, Nja’s debut EP I Still offers a vital contribution to Canadian folk-pop.
With her arresting voice and skilled guitar playing, Nja is an active force in Montreal’s music scene, performing regularly as part of The Kalmunity Vibe Collective.
Nja grew up listening to her grandmother playing Arabic classics on the piano and took up the instrument herself when she was just five years old. She later switched to guitar, playing in rock bands in high school, and going on to study jazz and classical guitar in CEGEP and University.
After years working as a session guitarist, it was when she was away teaching in South Korea, that Nja began performing solo shows and truly found her voice as a singer-songwriter.
She returned to Montreal and recorded the powerful, moody I Still, a raw and beautiful exploration of heartbreak, forgiveness, and acceptance of self, all coming from Nja’s personal experiences as the daughter of first generation immigrants.
