Interview With Nevada Color:
Please list the name and respective instrument of each band member.
Quinn Wirth - vocals
Max Kovalchuk - rhythm guitar/vocals
Chris Cichra - bass
Adam Valen - lead guitar
Jeremy Westhead - drums
When and how did all you guys come together?
The band formed in the summer of 2012, Max and Chris were involved in an indie folk band that I jammed with a couple times. That band broke up around the time Max and Chris were talking to Quinn and practicing with him. We wanted to find a more aggressive sound, so they switch to a rock approach. From there they asked Jeremy and myself to join.
How was the band formed? What was your inspiration behind forming the band?
Whoops, haha guess I covered too much ground in the last question. But I guess I’ll mention some of our backgrounds and inspirations that brought us together. I always wondered how we’re able to collaborate as a band with different styles of inspiration, but it works together really well with our chemistry. We have influences anywhere from Fleetwood Mac & Talking Heads to The Killers, Kings of Leon, Portugal, the Man and more.
What can you tell me about your instruments? (Brand loyalty, what you prefer to play with, etc.)
It’s funny, Chris, Max, and myself have all recently converted over to Fender (me personally rocking out a road-worn Tele). However, I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a Gretsch one of these days…
Who writes the majority of your lyrics?
Max, he has so many ideas coming out his head all the time.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
For the most part, they have been about people and places we’ve encountered throughout our lives. However, they all center around the idea of adventure. That’s been the main topic for our upcoming full-length.
Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
"You throw shit against a wall, something’s going to stick"….is what I wish we could say haha. Usually somebody comes to group with a catchy rhythm, a hook, or a couple of good lines for lyrics. We usually just keep bouncing back ideas off of each other. Lately, it’s been a really good collaborative effort for this record.
What can you tell me about your upcoming Debut Album?
Most of the songs on this record are about adventure, so expect the album to be an adventure. A lot of our songs are becoming more and more solidified as a good representation of what we’re about, and it really reflects as such in this record.
How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?
Our current EP Sharkey Lewis is available on iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud, all the good stuff. The record will be available on all of the same formats.
Any last words?
I just recently read an article from David Byrne (Talking Heads), and he said “With music, you often don’t have to translate it. It just affects you, and you don’t know why.”. Just something I’ve taken in with me to the studio.

Indie-rock spliced with pop anyone? Pittsburgh’s Nevada Color, first formed a couple of years ago, you may well recall their digital only released EP ‘Sharkey Lewis’ but today’s subject Nevada Colors first single proper from a promised Spring 2014 debut album.
First Impressions are that the band’s overall sound is both smooth and immediate, attributes that lubricate the indie-rock friendly ‘New Mexico’ reasonably well. Still something in the translation, it’s more positive and upbeat as a result not what you may describe as angst-driven but from the north east coast of England to that of the warmer climes of even the western coast of the U.S the outlook is not quite the same. Positivity aside, the band offer some lighter, well played fare, no doubt, with wider appeal in this multi-faced musical landscape. ‘New Mexico’ represents a fair 2013 re-introduction to Nevada Color, one which is comfortable. 7/10

Nevada Color has a sound that resembles Young the Giant and Two Door Cinema Club. Although the popularity of these two bands is rising listeners do not hear a lot of what they’re doing in the local music scene.
Nevada Color released their debut EP, “Sharkey Lewis,” in 2012. The EP carries a strong upbeat sound both instrumentally and vocally. The song “I am an Animal” displays this. The song starts off with a guitar riff that sounds like Two Door Cinema Club, and continues into a poppy drum beat to keep an upbeat sound.
“Sharkey Lewis” can be downloaded on Itunes or bandcamp. You can also check out Nevada Color on Facebook. - California University of Pennsylvania
Just a few days before their performance with The Apache Relay at Stage AE last week, indie rock quintet Nevada Color released its debut EP, Sharkey Lewis. In six songs, the band embarks on a colorful adventure of bright guitars and sunny vocals (“Sweet Adventurer”), as upbeat rhythms and playful percussion reveal their desire to just have fun.
The tunes are sweet and clean. Like a well-oiled machine, each instrument blends with the others impeccably, creating a smooth, unified sound. The precise attacks on every note and chord (as in “Lucy”) reveal an extreme attention to detail, a quality that makes for effective crescendos and decrescendos throughout Sharkey Lewis. Even at the most energetic junctures of each song, the band maintains an ear-pleasing composure. Nevada Color sounds polished but sustains a lighthearted vibe (“Into the Woods”).
Aside from precision, the band also demonstrates an awareness of their sound and what elements work well together. A wealth of group vocals (as in “I Am An Animal”) adds an extra layer of melodious gold beneath Quinn Wirth’s velvet voice, while Jeremy Westhead’s spot-on drumming pairs well with busy guitar licks. Sharkey Lewis is good mood music, consisting of refined yet rollicking compositions. - Pittsburgh City Paper
From Pittsburgh, PA, Nevada Color is a new five-piece band comprising of Quinn Wirth on vocals, Max Kovalchuk on guitar, Chris Cichra on bass, Adam Valen on guitar and Jeremy Westhead on the drums.
Currently, unsigned, the quintet have recently released their debut EP entitled 'Sharkey Lewis' featuring six tracks. My favourite track is 'Sweet Adventurer' which opens the EP. It is the first track I listened to by the band and it starts in such an unexpected style, slow and calm before jumping into an energetic indie vibe, awesome! It really set the tone from the whole EP and was a real joy to listen to, enjoy!

Sharkey Lewis starts off strong with “Strong Adventurer.” The song starts off slow but quickly breaks into a fun, fast-paced tune that sounds very much like Walk The Moon. It the vocals sound extremely earnest and sincere and the song as a whole feels huge and triumphant while also sounding a little sorrowful. It’s a very good listen, to say the least.
“Lucy” starts off with a call-and-response dynamic with the vocals and most of the instruments. The singer will sing a quiet verse with the drums and bass and then the rest of the band comes in loud and fast. When the two eventually meet up, the song climaxes into a rambunctious declaration of love and then abruptly goes back to quiet vocals. The differences in tone and mood make the song entertaining and interesting to listen to.
“Into the Woods” begins with just drums and an acoustic guitar and then explodes into a very ambient, full-bodied song. There’s a beauty about the song that makes it one of the stronger songs on the EP.
The next song, “Dreamer” sounds similar to a slower and very melodic Two Door Cinema Club or Walk The Moon song. The guitars are what really shine in this song. There are subtle guitar riffs strategically placed throughout the song that just contribute a lot to the overall feel of the song in addition to just sounding great tonally.
“I am an Animal” opens with a guitar riff that sounds straight out of a Two Door Cinema Club song. Listen for yourself,
The song is really great rhythmically, with upbeat, poppy drums, music, and vocals.
Sharkey Lewis winds down with “Oh Helen,” a slow love song that brings the EP to a satisfying close.
As a whole, Nevada Color proves themselves as more than capable pop-rock artists. Sharkey Lewis is a catchy, fun, and entertaining EP that you should definitely at least give a listen. Sharkey Lewis can also be purchased on iTunes or through Nevada Color’s Bandcamp, where you can also download acoustic versions of “Sweet Adventurer,” “Into the Woods,” and “Oh Helen.” - Tri State Indie
When Point Park University students Max Kovalchuk and Chris Cichra started composing new material for their folk-pop group Paper Politicians last summer, the duo realized a freshly penned guitar part blatantly deviated from the genre. Instead of scrapping the chords, they scrapped the band.
"We wanted to do something different," Kovalchuk said. "We wanted to be able to move around a little more on stage and get a little more rock with it."
The misfit rock song became the catalyst for Nevada Color, a rock band formed last July by recycling Kovalchuk and Cichra's existing musical chemistry and adding fellow Point Park students Quinn Wirth and Adam Valen to the mix, as well as self-proclaimed school-of-hard-knocks student Jeremy Westhead. Just a few weeks into its existence, the band, influenced by Vampire Weekend and Young the Giant, booked its first show. It didn't even have a name yet, let alone enough songs to play a full set.
"It pushed us to write more music," Valen says of the band's debut at the Smiling Moose, where they opened for The Company We Keep.
Many rehearsals and writing sessions later, Nevada Color can add performing with Go Radio and The Dangerous Summer to its list of accomplishments, as well as landing a gig with The Apache Relay booked for March 9 at Stage AE. The members plan to release Sharkey Lewis, a six-song EP, in early March, which will showcase the band's goal to "have fun," Kovalchuk said.
According to Westhead, "When you're finished listening to it, you're going to be in a great mood." - Pittsburgh City Paper
