On Wednesday March 30, 2011 at 8pm/PST Swoop’s World Primetime our guest is Nadia Kay. Nadia has recently written and released her second album "RELOADED" followed by a brand new dance single "WHY" while continuing touring and growing her already impressive fan base. The daughter of a well - known Jazz composer, Nadia was immersed in the music business from day one. She recalls singing along with her father as a young child, both at home and in rehearsals with his band. She spent her playtime writing melodies on the piano her father gave to her, all the while dreaming of someday sharing the stage with him. Soon she began performing in school productions like "Oklahoma" and "Rent," each experience further strengthening her resolve to pursue a career in entertainment. But first, she followed her parents' advice and earned a marketing degree while attending a private business school in New York. After performing at open-mic nights around Manhattan with her Pop/Rock band, Nadia eventually met a music producer who would soon become her mentor and close friend. As the world is introduced to Nadia Kay's edgy new sound and velvety voice, many will no doubt take note of the Ukrainian beauty's ability to entertain. With the launch of her new music video "Captain Sky Love"? she is excited to take her music career to the next level. Powerful and polished, her creative vision is a high-energy-pop-dance-story beautifully told with fierce beats, sexy lyrics and flawless choreography. Backed by four talented dancers, Nadia is currently touring the US. Join us each week on Swoop’s World Primetime at 8pm (PST). Listeners can call in live or join in via our online chat. Our shows are also available for download from iTunes. - Swoop's World Primetime
Emerging Pop princess Nadia Kay has released the follow-up to 2009’s “Music, Sex and Marshmallows” with her 10-track LP of electronica-laced, beat-heavy dance pop, Reloaded. Lyrically, the album is comprised of the relatively standard fare of clubs, DJs and “Bling” (Track 10, actually. See below.), although a few songs are thematically based: aviation, beauty salons and chemistry. And while the analogies seem far off, Kay’s storytelling via lyrics pulls them off surprisingly well.
Album single “Captain Sky Love” is replete with dance club electronic squeaks and a heavy accompanying beat. Kay’s vocals stand out and though they are laden with effects, it bolsters her voice into a strong vocal delivery. “Crashing Down” is a break from the racing album pace with its down-tempo delivery and demure backing instrumentation. Again the strong vocals begin with Kay’s a cappella intro through to the fade. “Bling” features quirky electronica, an amped drum beat and the ubiquitous lyrics you would associate with a song called “Bling.” The track as a package is catchy without quite tipping into kitschy. Think a dance version of Madonna’s “Material Girl.”
When it comes to Pop stardom, Kay is the complete package. She’s obviously easy on the eyes. Her theatrical background has lent the necessary amount of stage presence and her vocals and songs are certainly radio-friendly enough to make a standard rotation. But it seems the best place for her music to find a home was summed up nicely by 50 Cent when he said: “You’ll find me in da club.”

Though the majority of her fans are teeny-bopper girls from ages 12-25, anyone who loves to dance and just have a good time needs to tap into Nadia Kay. Her listeners love her “pop” elements and up-beat attitude… her sexy style doesn’t hurt either. Neither does her openness and sensitivity towards her fans. Nonetheless, if you can’t find her digitally, she’s always chatting with her audiences after shows. She likes her fans to feel comfortable, like one big get-together rather than just a performance. So, take a second and come hang out with Nadia Kay…
Your debut album was titled “Music, Sex, ‘N’ Marshmallows”. How’d the marshmallows come into the equation?
Well... I have a really big sweet tooth and marshmallows are my favorite treat. But wait... Throw in some music and sex and you've got a winning combination. (She smiles.)
I know you have two full albums under your belt. Any ideas for a third?
I'm always writing. I can't stop. I write in my sleep, in the shower; even in the taxi... I get inspired by beauty and kindness in people and try to express that in my songs. I have been touring this entire year while promoting my recently released second album "RELOADED", so I haven't really had enough time to put together a third album, but it's definitely in the works. What I do have coming up is a release of my brand new single "WHY" on Silver Curve Records.
Oh yeah? What’s it about?
It's an amazing dance song about love, passion, and redemption. I can't wait to share it with the world!
Your crazy energy is contagious! You also have a very vivacious and sexy look when it comes to your wardrobe, makeup, all the way down to your posing. How did you come to realize your sultry style as not only an artist, but as a woman?
Thank you so much! I'm a very visual person, I love experimenting with different looks, trying on new makeup and styling my hair in new crazy ways but it all comes from the way I feel about the world inside and outside of me. I'm not always happy and cheerful; sometimes I get touched by darkness so all of these emotions come through in my music and the way I look. I try to stay true to myself and express what I feel in the moment rather than play a role. I want my fans to know the real me.
Well, the real you seems to have a knack for modeling. Ever thought of exploring a career in that area?
Modeling is not for me. I can't really stand still for too long. I have a short attention span. I need to keep on moving and entertain myself with new exciting projects. But, an occasional photo shoot is always fun.
So, no modeling. Check! Music on the other hand; I hear music was in your blood…
Yes, I grew up listening to my dad play piano. He is a well-known Ukrainian Jazz composer. I started taking music lessons at four and as far as writing - how does that ABBA song go? Oh yes "I began to sing before I could talk..." My parents didn't want me to have a career in entertainment though... So, I got a marketing degree, framed my diploma, gave it to them for Christmas, and now - I'm doing me.
Was it then that you discovered your signature sound as a music artist?
I had written and recorded at least thirty songs before it all came together for me. I sang with a rock band for some time - that was super cool! Then, I did the Pop/Rock thing and now I feel really good about my current direction which is Pop/Dance. It energizes me. But you never know - maybe I'll die my hair pink tomorrow and go punk - inspiration is a wicked animal.
Other than music, what are some of your aspirations or passions?
I love designing my own outfits so I buy interesting clothes anywhere I can find them. Then, I mix and match all the pieces for a crazy-sexy-cool-Nadia-Kay style. I also love to try different foods together – I get a kick out of discovering new flavors. My latest is chocolate and bacon – yummy. I think I would also be an excellent interior designer – I love re-arranging furniture in my apartment and combining old and new styles.
Seems a little like your music… combining old and new styles into a “crazy-sexy-cool-Nadia-Kay style.” Let’s focus on your lyrics for a second, filled with fun and sexiness. Where do you get your ideas from?
Sometimes in conversations - people say things that catch my attention. The other day, I was at Forever 21 and I heard a girl say to her boyfriend "why can't you be perfect!?..." And it dawned on me - what a great title for a song. So mark my words - there will be a song coming out soon called "Why Can't You Be Perfect" by Nadia Kay.
I better watch what I say around you. (I joke.) So, what do you feel keeps you motivated in your career when you suffer hiccups or disappointments?

Up-and-comer Nadia Kay is back with the release of her sophomore album, "Reloaded."
She first hit the music scene with her brand of high-energy dance/pop on her debut album, "Music Sex 'n' Marshmallows." The title alone gave her the kind of buzz any new artist loves.
Nadia is also filming a music reality show that is set to air this summer. Let's sit down and get acquainted with the woman behind it all, Ms. Nadia Kay.
MS: Let's chat about your sophomore album, "Reloaded."
NK: Well, I did have a first album, too. "Music Sex 'n' Marshmallows".
MS: Yeah, what about those marshmallows? (Laughs.)
NK: Right, well, music and sex are there, too. You can't not love that, and the marshmallows add the finishing touch of sweetness. The marshmallows do it for me every time. (Laughs.)
MS: It's getting a little hot in here. Why don't we switch gears back to "Reloaded"? (Laughs.)
NK: With "Reloaded" I wanted to put out an album that had a lot of energy and incorporated a lot of dance music. The focus was an album that people would have fun listening too. You can even workout to it at the gym! (Laughs.) It also has a few mid-tempo songs like "Chemical Miracle."
MS: There's a ballad also, "Crashing Down."
NK: That's a song that is very dear to me. I wrote it about my first love. But everything else on the album is high-energy dance!
MS: You definitely have a lot of energy!
NK: (Laughs.) I try, I try!
MS: Keeping that energy up is a tough thing to do. Most people do not realize that.
NK: It is! I also try to put a different spin on my songs, too, as they are the same themes that people usually write songs about.
Listen to "Captain Sky Love"
MS: You have a video for your current single, "Captain Sky Love," was that based on you dating a pilot, by chance?
NK: Well, the song is definitely based on a boy, I can tell you that much. Whether he was a pilot or not is something that I would like to keep a mystery.
MS: Tease! (Both laugh.)
NK: I was inspired by the feelings you have when you are in love to write the song. When you are in love you feel like you can fly!
MS: Inspiration for songs always fascinates me.
NK: As an artist, when writing a song I always like to leave room for people's imagination. The same thing can mean something different to different people. I try to let my mind go and let my imagination guide how I write a song.
MS: By the way, I love your accent. Share some of your background with me.

NK: Thank you so much! I'm Ukrainian, I was born there. My family moved to the United States when I was a teen, so I basically grew up here. The way I look at it I was able to get the best of both worlds. That is something I try to incorporate into my music as well. I try to put my own little Ukrainian twist on it (laughs). I actually sing the last piece on "Captain Sky Love" in Russian.
MS: Before we sign off, tell the Chorus and Verse readers something about the reality show you are doing.
NK: It is currently filming. It is about what happens behind the scenes in the music industry. It documents the process of making music and where the inspiration comes from to do it. It also shows the competition between female artists who are all pursuing the same dream. It really explores the relationship between females in the entertainment industry.
MS: On that note, I have to ask before we go: What female artist inspires you most?
NK: One of the first female artist that got me hooked on music and singing was listening to Mariah Carey. Her and Celine Dion as well, they made me want to pursue my musical dreams.
MS: Thank you, Nadia! - Chorus and Verse Magazine
1. What do you think is the most difficult step of an indie artist?
Nadia Kay: I believe that the most difficult step for an indie artist is coming to terms with the idea that “being discovered” only happens to maybe one in a million and that you have to do it all yourself. From putting together a band -to being your own booking agent -to doing graphic design and marketing your music – you have to do it all yourself! Once you have a good following and have the clubs packed with fans during your gigs -you know you are on the right track.
2. How important is Internet promo to artists today?
Nadia: Internet promo is a great way to stay in touch with your fans on a regular basis. Posting new photos and videos, updating your tour dates and answering fan mail – all are important tools to keep it interesting and exciting for your fans. I consider all of my fans to be my friends and even though it sometimes takes me hours to answer their messages – I love doing it. It makes me feel connected and allows for that “personal touch” that every fan appreciates.
3. What is the best way you think an artist can utilize the web to further their career?
Nadia: Every artist should have a professional looking website as well as pages on popular social media sites. Additionally, there are great platforms like Jango, Sonicbids and Reverbnation – where an artist can not only connect with new fans but also submit their music to be considered for gigs at major music festivals and even opening for established acts.
4. You’ve been in many publications, do you have any advice for other indie artists on how to get featured?
Nadia: The reason that I’ve been featured in many publication is because I’m persistent. I stay in touch with magazine editors to let them know about my progress and they in turn don’t forget about me. So that when a spot opens up and they feel like my story would be a good fit – they know how to reach me.
5. Do you think music today is based a lot on image?
Nadia: Yes of course. Before your audience hears you – they see you first! Every artist should have their own unique image and personae. It should be true to who they really are inside, just more pronounced – almost taken to the extreme. An artist is someone who is very different from everyone else with their own understanding of how the world works – which is reflected through their art and the image… is a direct result of that.
6. Some artists have that ‘Get me out’ moment in this business, Have you had that? If so how did you get past it?
Nadia: You have to stay positive. That’s what I do! Because at the end of the day, I can say that I spent it doing what I really love. It’s more about the journey for me, not the destination… If you live your life doing what you love – then that’s what counts. Though it’s nice to have a Grammy on your shelf!
7. Do you have any tips for a music video first timer?
Nadia: Make it simple. Chose 2-3 locations at most. Work with multiple cameras to have different shots of the same take – it makes it more exciting to watch. The story should not be too complex, it’s more about a concept which can be certain colors or effects or even movement – something that can be woven throughout the video.
8. What is the most important rule one should know when in a recording session?
Nadia: Get lots of sleep the night before. Don’t smoke, dont’ drink alcohol and hydrate yourself.
9. What’s the one thing every artist should do everyday?
Nadia: Work on perfecting their craft and stay positive!
10. Some artists take rejection badly, What do you think is the best way to deal with a ‘No’?
Nadia: You have to be in peace with yourself first. You have to know yourself – your strengths and limitations. Once you have that accomplished – then it doesn’t matter what other people say… Be strong and keep on doing your thing! - MusiqFix Magazine
SO TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR MUSIC...
Well, I write all of it so it is very original (smiles coyly...)My first album has a pop-rock vibe to it. There are a few dance songs on it but it’s mostly mid-tempo ballads like “TELL ME” and “LOSE MY WAY.” The second album that I’m working on now will feature high-tempo pop songs combining dance elements and R&B beats. I even threw in a few remixes of famous 60’s and 70’s hits...
WHAT ELSE ARE YOU WORKING ON THESE DAYS?
Well, besides my second album called "NADIA KAY RELOADED" that I’m super excited about, I also have a web reality show because I think everyone should have one (giggles...) And I’m in pre-production for a documentary film about my journey with my label - Silver Curve Records.
TELL US ABOUT THE REALITY SHOW...
The show documents the lives of a young New York couple trying to break through in the entertainment industry. It has a little bit of everything: dirt and glamour, romance and drama, a few catfights and of course – lots of entertainment!
AND WHAT ABOUT THE MOVIE?
That’s a secret for now but I’ll keep you posted on the progress…
OK... ONE MORE TRICKY QUESTION FOR YOU... IF IT WANSN'T FOR MUSIC WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Hmmm... I'd be an army general! - Outlook Magazine
