German born, Toronto-based emcee, Mutari has been making waves in the R&B and hip-hop genre. The artist recently just dropped “Switch Up”, his first single off his forthcoming EP titled, Berlin.
“Switch Up” is a slow, smooth ballad bringing a different side of Mutari’s vocal abilities to the forefront and a definite departure from the artists’ more trap heavy tracks. This track is giving us some serious feels – showing his audience a more real side of his struggles and a more multi-dimensional side of Mutari‘s sound.
Mutari collaborates with Toronto producer Sascha over an icy guitar instrumental. Sacha’s melodies provide the perfect soundtrack to Mutari‘s storytelling with a light snare drum. “Switch Up” discusses Mutari‘s experience of a love story went wrong. The song opens up about Mutari‘s experience with a lover who decides to switch up her feelings and gives out mixed signals over a relationship that is on the verge of crumbling. “Why do I got to think about you” he sings.
It’s exciting to see Mutari experimenting with his sound giving the audience a a more vulnerable glance into his persona. Mutari is set to perform at the Mod Club Theatre in Toronto on May 10th, opening for rapper/singer, Pryde along with Toronto heavy hitter Rajan on the bill, as well.

Toronto-based artist Mutari has started the year off strong with his newly released single “In The DM’S (Freestyle)” featuring Andy Scopez. Playing on the culturally in-tune phenomenon of the personal thread, Mutari crafts a relatable dialogue about connecting in the 21st century, which can only be found in the hidden world of direct messaging. With that said, we believe this young artist will have a great year, and we got our eyes on him. - BestFanBlog: Devo
Toronto representative Mutari stays “Cruising” through the city in his latest release produced by SoundofTJ. “Cruising” is stemmed from real life events, in a positive feel good vibe that is sure to make you want to touch road and hit the 401. Take in Mutari’s latest and check out a little story on the man himself below.
Yannick Joseph, known as Mutari, is an independent artist who currently claims Toronto as his home. Born in Germany to Cameroon-born parents, he moved to his city at the age of six. Mutari lives and breathes music, crediting it with saving his life. He began to throw himself into his craft after the loss of his father at age ten, where it functioned first as an emotional outlet, then as a creative passion. He quickly moved on to writing at the age of twelve, and the release of his first song at age fourteen — a remix to Young Jeezy’s “I Luv It”. He enjoyed a brief stint in his high school band, DiverseCity, which allowed him to come into his own as the spontaneous and emotive performer he is today. Mutari is currently enrolled at York University studying sociology and psychology. Mutari draws on a diverse range of experiences, allowing him to captivate his audience with a unique, intrepid sound. While Mutari is undeniably shaped by Toronto, he diverges from the dominant Toronto sound. Instead he incorporates a foreign sound with tastefully auto- tuned flow, showing off his true ability to spit bars and a keen ear of melody. ’Tari, as he has been nicknamed by his loyal fan base, is gifted with ability to create club bangers then easily switch his flow to something smoother for his female fan base Due to this, his local shows have created a new vibe in the city. At the young age of 20, Mutari has already opened up for multiple known artists: SoMo, D.Pryde, Cam Hunter, Paradise Fears, Huey Mack, Futuristic, Cam Meekins among others. His recent releases include the songs “Herbal” and “In the DMs Freestyle”, which have earned extremely positive feedback from his fans as well as music industry moguls. Best Fan Blog stated that “Mutari started the year off strong” commenting on his single “In The DMs” calling him “relatable” and predicting that the “young artist will have a great year, and we got our eyes on him.” With no formal training, Mutari’s success is a direct result of his intense work ethic and dedicated passion for music. Mutari is currently working on his debut EP “Foreign Sound” which we can expect to hear this spring/summer - Boi1da.Com - Colton

Bio
Mutari is a German born and Toronto raised rapper who implements ‘foreign sound’ into his music. He wrote his first song at the age of 12, and used his music as an outlet to express his feelings through his many childhood tribulations. He wrote about his father getting a new job overseas in Saudi Arabia, who was never seen again. He also talks about how his mother wanted him to focus on academics and pursue career paths such as a doctor, dentist or lawyer. Nonetheless, Mutari knew that it was his life calling to pursue music and leave lasting impressions on millions of fans worldwide.
Mutari is a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. At the age of 16 he found himself kicked out of high school. At this point in time Mutari became homeless. Bouncing around from friend to friends house, sleeping on the couch, or wherever he could find a bed on any given night. The struggle was real, but Mutari knew things could only get better. At the end of the day all the negative situations that Mutari was faced with as a teenager ended up being a blessing in disguise. It was at this new school where he met his band, a pivotal point in Mutari’s music endeavours. This music collaboration sparked the beginnings of a bright music career. There is absolutely no doubt that these chain of events played a major part in leading him to be the ‘Mutari’ he is today.
Mutari ended up sticking with his rock band throughout high school and then began to branch out, joining an R&B duo during his first year of university. He then later decided that it was best for him to pursue music solo. It was very important for him to have full creative control, flexibility and focus on building his own sound and brand. Music has played a large role in Mutari’s life, and without it. Who knows where he would be?
As for how or whom came up with the stage name, ’Mutari’. He says the name was randomly found while he was flipping through a Latin dictionary, and the word ‘Mutari’ jumped out at him. Originally the name was intended for a music collective he wanted to start, but then decided it was best suited for himself. The name Mutari means “a change, or to become something different”, and at that very moment he knew he found his stage name. Mutari is a name that truly reflected his life’s journey and who he hopes to become. The name mirrored his life; “Going solo was a change and I want to be different and unique, plus the name sounded cool! Aha”.
Mutari’s dedication, persistence, and unyielding relentlessness has resulted in continual growth of his brand. He has booked himself notable shows from the age of 16, networked, and has grown a good rapport within the industry. Some notable shows include:
1. Opening up for Pryde at Revival – Toronto
2. The Mod Club – Toronto
3. Rivoli – Toronto
4. Dundas Square – Downtown Toronto
5. Annex Wreckroom,
6. The Phoneix Concert Theatre – Studio Bar

Mutari has recently secured management and things are starting to progress and trend in the right direction.
