Ministry of the Environment
An EP
Independent
Toronto's Ministry of the Environment is poised to turn heads with their debut EP.
The four-piece, made up of former members of Leviride, Showroom and singer Liana K. Rose, have crafted an exquisite collection of gentle indie rock tunes with Rose's beautiful voice holding it all together.
Guitarist Rory Lindsay improves on his already incredible fretwork, particularly on the U2'esque opening to 'Sorry'. He also backs Rose up on the disc's lead off 'Breathing Out' and its closer 'Cantina'.
Musically, the band takes a subdued approach to the disc's eight tracks. Several songs start out quietly before building to a slightly louder climax, particularly 'Heartbreak Form'. It suits Rose's breathy vocals perfectly. While she doesn't exactly belt it out, she sounds equally comfortable on the moments where the band moves away from the quiet dynamic that informs much of this release.
What makes this polished batch of songs even more impressive is the fact that the band has only been together for a short time. It speaks to the band member's collective talent that they were able to turn in a release this impressive.

Bio
In the spring of 2007, guitarist Rory Lindsay, bassist Tristan Samuk, and drummer Andrew McMullen met vocalist Liana Rose. Dubbing themselves Ministry of the Environment, they wrote a fresh batch of tunes and began playing monthly shows in Toronto venues. October 9, 2008 marked the release of their first disc, βAn EP.β
Blending elements from their previous bands (Showroom, Leviride) and their shared love of The Sea and Cake, Sonic Youth, The Smiths, and others, Ministry of the Environment create pleasingly ambitious and carefully crafted pop music.
A second EP will be released in the spring of 2009.
